What's the timeframe on a return to relevance?

The brutal nature of next year's schedule combined with losing most of the people responsible for our production on offense has been talked about enough that I don't think most of us expect to contend for the East next season. We're going to lose the bulk of the starters on both lines after next season. Given the time it usually takes to get incoming lineman strong and big enough to be an effective starter in the SEC, I'm not sure that we will have much of a DL in 2014. It just seems like the program is completely out of synch where we're constantly going back square one at some crucial area while peaking at another. We're basically at the bottom the SEC right now so how many years should it take to get this thing set to rights?
We're relevant now. That's why we're always in the college football discussion.
What you're really asking is when will we return to prominence. I'd say 2-3 years. Dooley, for all his faults, laid a good foundation. We just need to build the walls and roof.

Our OL will be great next year, but they graduate...2014 could be tough! We also lose some @ DL and DE!

It is best not to ask...If this staff is stout in recruiting and coaching, we could be back in three years, give or take--but only if they are good. If they are average, we'll be asking this question again in three years with another new coach.

I think Butch Jones and staff would have to be a complete train wreck for Dave Hart to pull the plug on them after 3 years. Hart will give him every chance to turn it around because he is his guy. He will give him at least 5 years.

Is that u Dave hart??? If these coaches sux like cdd they will not be past three. U think the stadium was empty before u let this coach off n def sux n get blown out next season n then year 2 it happens again.. only fans with bags on their heads will be at the game. Hart will be fired n so on. Vol nation will not support another 5 year project n hopefully hart is not stupid enough to think he has that much support.

Merry Xmas vols nation

I agree with everything you said. I'm just saying if Dave Hart is still in charge after 3 years he will give Jones at least 5 years to be succcessful. I guess it is a matter of opinion as to what is considered successful. Who knows, we could improve the play on the field greatly and still only win 7 games for the next couple of years or so.

I'm not sure there is a good answer to this question.. Butch will have to exceed expectations or it could be a long while.. The current landscape of the SEC doesn't bold well for a quick rise.. Slow and steady would probably be the best that can be expected. Otherwise we continue the coaching carousel.

There are too many unknowns at this point to guess when we will be on top and competing for championships. Recruiting is important, but player development is equally as important. Look at what Patterson does with regularity at TCU.

We have talent on the O side of the ball. No doubt about that, even though we will be loosing a few to the NFL draft. If we are going to get back to a respectable position in CFB ranks the D side of the ball needs to improve drastically. I do not believe we are absent of talent, but rather were victims of poor coaching and scheming. Even mediocre defenses can make stops one third of the time.

If the D coaches can get this team back to just above mediocre this coming spring and fall practices, we should be in decent shape to be respectable. By that I mean 7 or 8 wins this next year. If the Vols can win 7 to 8 the next couple of years, and players are being developed as they should be over the next couple of years, we could be up to 2nd or 3rd in the SECE by year 3. After that, we should be competing for the SEC on a regular basis.

We'll begin the Return to Relevance when the university gets serious about football again. Poaching Cincy's coaching staff, recruiting a roster of 3*s and feeling good about it is something UK would do.

If CBJ and staff are legit then 3 yrs into this thing we should be contending for SEC champions which in turn means competing for NC's, 4 yrs in should be setting the bar for contending on a yearly basis.

Simply put, 3 yrs into this deal should tell us if we're on the road to where we want to be.

We won't be good until UGA and or FL is down again to take their recruits IMO.

Realistically, to play with the big boys you've got to pay with the big boys. It's like sitting down at the $100 hand poker table with a fist full of $1 bills. Sure, you may get lucky and turn that fist full of $1 bills into a fist full of $100's but more than likely you're gonna get run off of the table pretty quickly.
