Whats your job?

What's your job/job area? And what did you major in/study at school to get the job?

I'm a senior in HS so obviously still debating on what to go into. Just got accepted to UT yesterday so hopefully looking into a business major there!

Got a degree in marketing, but my collateral is in supply chain logistics. If you want to do business-- there are more of supply chain jobs out there than any other business discipline that I have noticed (aside from accounting or finane i believe).

Thanks for the info. What exactly do you do?

I worked for a couple different transportation companies when I was in college. Now I work for a big consumer goods company, doing inventory analysis. UT has one of the best supply chain programs in the country i believe, and I know alot of big companies recruit from Tennessee such as Proctor & Gamble, Newell Rubbermaid, International Paper, etc.

Most of my friends that majored in Logistics got really jobs right out of college. The key is make sure you get some kind of good internship while you are at UT.

And I graduated in December '08 so its pretty recent.

B.S. Political Science Major/Business Mgt. Minor

Wanted to be a federal agent (BATF) out of college and was in the long and in depth application process. While waiting, I got hired by a big lumber outfit as a designer/production mgr. This afforded me to work with some of the big contractors in the Nashville area and I got very interested in what they do and often, in my mind, questioned their practices and thought I could do better. Studied and passed for a contractors license and built my first two homes (on the DL) while working with the lumber company. Homes sold within a few weeks and that's all she wrote. I quit the company and started my own business as a general contractor.

Respectfully plan to get an MBA if you pursue this field. Plan to get a masters degree and licensure if you plan to get in the Psychology field. Schools sometimes are more concerned about taking in the dollars instead of helping students as they should. RN bachelors degree would be great and once you pass your boards get your masters degree. Engineering (electrical esp) good field and obtail masters as well. Teaching excellent as well but I'd pursue masters in that as well and make a lot more money that way. All the professional schools at UT are so cheap and so competitive it's hard to get in. Med School,Pharmacy (Memphis) Law school Knoxville. I have learned that any job that requires a licensure is worth all the money and then some you pay to obtain it. Good luck and study hard and you can always change your mind and major early on.

Graduating in a week from UT's MBA program with a concentration in Logistics. Companies love the UT logistics student.

Congrats on the MBA, hopefully within the next few years I am going to go back to get mine.

By the way, how much math was involved in the graduate logistics? There was alot more than I expected in undergrad.

Thanks! I've never been a much of a math guy myself. While there was certainly math involved, it was usually tied into excel (which did most of the heavy lifting). The logistics classes were typically geared toward higher-level, network design type theories, but there was plenty of analysis thrown in there. If I could do the math, I think anyone can.

Middle school. It isn't the Green Bay Packers, but I'm pretty excited to be in that position so early into my career.

Many times I considered going into coaching, and if I did I would have started out the exact same way you are. Will you be in a feeder program running a lot of stuff as the high school?

It is a feeder program, but you get to run your own system. There are a few middle schools in the county, and you compete for state titles.

If you're working in Supply Chain/Logistics for a CPG compnay and get the opportunity to work in Northwest Arkansas with Walmart take it..

There's nothing that will surpass that experience..

I've heard good things from a friend that had an internship there. What makes it so awesome?

Very true; Walmart's supply chain is off the hook. They're cutthroat though.
