When will we see teams refusing to play?

If a school refuse to play in a game why would anyone take that program seriously again?
Notre Dame used to decline bowl invitations if they thought it was a lesser bowl and below them

Pretty sure most take them seriously

Only idiots take them seriously. ND is the most overrated program of all time. They should be forced into a conference. F them. Also, this is about moving forward...

Serious question….when we see large number of athletes refusing to play because of money? For example we are seeing positions like QB, WR, DL making the high NIL dollar amounts. Will we ever see entire units like offensive linemen, kickers, etc. make a statement about the huge gap? They practice just as much, work as hard and don’t reap the benefits. If this has already been discussed frequently, please forgive me.
I’m surprised FSU didn’t tell CFB to stick it. If there ever was a team that had a reason, they did.

I think we’re not far from both teams saying “no pay, no play” in these games.

Agree completely. I know they would have lost a ton of money but the decision to leave them out was criminal.

Have to disagree with both of you. I do think that Georgia should have been in instead of Texas, but no ACC team should be there.

Why do you mean by stick it? Like tell them we’re not playing in the Orange Bowl? I don’t think FSU wanted to be sued, so they avoided that by not refusing to play.

Seen Missouri win last night with no opt outs. Their player said brothehood. Lane Kiffen like him or not said basically never seen a game where there was free agency during the season. NIL and portal going to make this game only about money. You will have 10 ish good teams every year. Teams who spend the most. Go Vols
NIL's are a contract. Two parties sign. The university is not a party.
Don't give a NIL to players that won't commit to playing in the post season for the NIL issuer.

What control does FSU have over their players? I admit, I don’t know but I don’t think they can force their players to play.

Players may quit but full teams will always play, even with bowl games.

Actually, I think the coaches probably like some of the opt out situations because it allows them to practice for next year with the new players.

Players will need to understand (and I think they probably do) that some positions get paid more. Just like in the NFL positions like QB, OT and DE are getting rewarded the most in the NIL world. If a place kicker is upset he’s not making as much as the QB, he’s not paying attention to the way the football world works
It's 2023...that's not fair..

So you’re gonna leave out a team that beat Alabama at Alabama over a team that lost to Alabama on a neutral field?

You deserve a serious answer.
In basketball, there have been schools that didn’t make the NCAA tourney that turned down an NIT bid. I could see that happening in the future in football especially if they think they will lose money by participating and can’t sell tickets or will have to pay too much to bring staff, bands, etc.

I am not surprised in the least. It was always just talk. There was an under 1% chance they would skip. They had every motivation on the surface to do it, if they ever were. (I.e. Feeling robbed, missing half their team, 20 point underdogs, could have preserved an undefeated season and declare themselves National Champions, etc)

But it would not bode well for them long term to do such a thing. For one, it probably wouldn't help in their lawsuit against the ACC if they are foregoing NY6 bowl games and the money that goes to the conference becuase of that. Also, it probably would not sit well with the NCAA, CFP committee, or bowl hosts. I could see there being a lasting negative stigma if they were to have opted not to play. Maybe not in terms of an actual suspension, but could blackball them.

I’m opposite. This is about PLAYERS, not schools. Schools don’t control players anymore, have you noticed? If I’d been on FSU, I’d said “we all play or none play”. Nothing FSU or NCAA or ESPN could do about it.

Oh, it's poised to spin out of control. The commercialism and greed went rampant---more games, a playoff, ridiculous conference expansion, and then even more ridiculous and illogical conference expansion and contraction, and /EVERYBODY/ in the portal, and recruiting as a bribery contest, and now a bigger playoff and even more games---8 games became 10 and then 12 and soon 14 or 16? Now it's appeasing the student-athletes in every way, forgetting that they are full-time students. I hope we see band members and cheerleaders demanding pay--and then higher pay--and then going on strike in original ways. I want to see bands marching out onto the field, then refusing to play and marching back off the field. That would be brilliant. I want to see cheerleaders run out to their accustomed spots and then throw down the pompoms and run off the field in protest. I want to see it all get really crazy so that everyone can see how absurd this road is--college sports that has dropped the "college" aspect of it.
Amen!! If anyone thinks this is college football then as the old saying goes I've got a good deal on ocean front property in Arizona!! The fun in watching this game is long gone!!

The 12 team playoff will help…I doubt many will opt out if they have a shot at the national championship.

But the other bowls will be like exhibition games - good chance for teams to get extra practice and to play new players. Like our game this year - we’ll see Nico start along with some other folks we hope will be stars next year.

Sure, but schools control their approach and this is what happens when you load your roster with transfer portal talent. Such guys are upperclassmen looking to play for a year (or two if you are lucky), before jetting off to the NFL. They have less allegiance to their college team and program. They are there for business.

By taking this approach, there is less of a focus on getting younger talent the experience needed to develop. Some young guys are recruited over or not prioritized. Hence why it should be alarming how many transfer portal opt outs FSU had considering they had guys leaving for the NFL, vacating spots for others to take. Backup players would rather go elsewhere.

NIL has zero, absolutely nothing to do with opt-outs. Players have been opting out for a long time. You will see less next year with the expanded playoffs, but NIL DOES NOT MEAN PLAYERS GET MONEY TO PLAY! Don't believe me? Nico rode the damn pine all year long. He still gets paid.

If players get salty because they are not making money off THEIR name, image, and likeness. If they refuse to play because they cannot secure their own NIL, that is 100% on them.

NIL is not pay-for-play, I know crazy right, but it's true. Snaps and season goals do not correlate.
NIL is not universal. It's that individual's right and not anyone else on the team. If you find that you are not getting NIL money like others, step up your game or get better representation to help you find clients.
NIL should not be redistributed. That's not how America works.

The bottom line is that NIL is not a team sport!

why does anyone think FSU should have been in without Travis
did you see the ACC championship game--could not make a first down

the Orange Bowl debacle on their part is typical FSU
