When will we see teams refusing to play?

You can with a contract, between player and NIL group. Buyouts accepted

Just saw a July 2023 article, Texas had already spent $15.7M on athletes since NIL started. Basically over $7.5M per year. Fifteen sports with FB & BB getting $13.5M

There are a lot of dumb, crazy, rich boosters around--and the richest and craziest are of course in texas and associated with the longhorns and the aggies. Men spending huge bucks in the hope their teams can win college football games. College football shouldn't be that important, but it's become a big part of the entertainment industry, and the U.S. entertainment industry is crazy.

Just suit up some half drunk guys on frat row and let them play.
Thun-guy, team opt-outs has actually happened, not necessarily due to NIL But it has happened.
Also, I apologize for not finding the link, but way back in the way back years, an undefeated team declined a bowl. Can't recall the reason, but it was a 60% vs. 40% vote split, according to their QB. As for frat boys playing, that actually happened too. The coach of the college resented losing to a baseball team 22-0, I think. He was also the baseball coach as well as the football coach and wanted revenge. Petty bassard. That school proceeded to disband their football team. The vengeful coached threatened a lawsuit if the football game wasn't played. So the offending school fielded a team of frat guys, and regular students. Of course, they lost badly. I just wish I had paid attention enough to save the links to these events. But I wasn't even looking for this information at the time. I was looking for the SEC bowl games highlights., YouTube accounts of these events popped up. Try as I might, i can't relocate the video documentaries. The first even had brief B/W video clips from the game. Just the same, NIL or not, I suppose it is a case of: Ecclesiastes 1:9 & 10

Serious question….when we see large number of athletes refusing to play because of money? For example we are seeing positions like QB, WR, DL making the high NIL dollar amounts. Will we ever see entire units like offensive linemen, kickers, etc. make a statement about the huge gap? They practice just as much, work as hard and don’t reap the benefits. If this has already been discussed frequently, please forgive me.
This year!

Paying players has been happening for decades. Only difference now is we have an official name for it, called NIL. Barry Switzer was quoted when he took the Dallas Cowboys job in 1994 was ask, "Whats the difference in coaching NFL vs College. Answer from Switzer: There is no salary cap in college!

Still no salary cap in college 29 years later and I don't anticipate one anytime soon.

FSU should have not played their bowl game given their injuries, opt outs, and transfers out.

It was meaningless since they got shafted by the playoff committee. It would have sent a strong message to the committee, the NCAA, and the networks.

I heard they withdrew leaving the ACC for the SEC before the end of the first half.

So they should have walked away from their bowl payout worth tens of millions of dollars because it was "meaningless"? Would have been an odd choice for a school suing to get out of the ACC because they don't feel like they're getting enough money from the conference.

You just have to follow the money. Programs will field a team for the bowls as long as the money is there. But, I can see a time when opt outs weaken the on-field play to the point that fans lose interest. If the tv money isn’t there, the payouts get smaller, and over time, these games go away. All of the harping in the media about bowl games being “meaningless” will just accelerate the process.

Teams refuse? Given a chance to play on a big stage? Talk to the bench perrenialers, the walkons, the coaches sons...they will unite and, all 11 of them, will go to football war.

well, if there is NO business willing to pay an offensive lineman for his name, then its tough luck. Since they are not paid for playing ball, not playing in a protest is not going to get them paid. your name as to be worth something to get paid.

I'd say that starting a new thread to discuss this possible scenario, of which there are currently no indications that it's even remotely on the horizon, is indictive in and of itself that you are concerned about it.
25 years ago, I could not have imagined how far the mentality of "screw my teammates" would grow to its current state. Absolutely no telling where it'll be in another 25.

I’d be interested in “restrictions” that would prove legal. Until colleges give up this farcical myth of student athletes in a multibillion dollar industry and share the loot, athletes will get theirs in NIL.
You think the players should get revenue sharing from the universities???

Sure why not. Let's just put the bullet in the head of college football and stop the slow death it is now experiencing.

Exactly. And as we all know, the QB is the only one on the team that matters. Just ask FSU or better yet, Joe Theisman.

I think they WILL! If the NCAA persists on trying to cap or “control” what they make on their own image and likeness. A financial cap insinuates there’s a SALARY. Limitations on such in a multiple billion industry require a LABOR agreement. That opens up a lot more loot to divvy up. Smart move is let them make their own money.

Weird Marxist trash. If kickers could make more money doing something else, they likely would. If this were a real problem, we would’ve seen it in the nfl already. It’s not.

I'm more concerned about the fans quitting

Just had six guys agree, for the cost these days and potential opt outs, it's not worth going to a bowl game unless it's a playoff game when your team's players stick with it and take it serious.
Some bowl destinations are just worth it

Hell, I would go to New Orleans to celebrate nothing more than the opening of a cigarette packet. LSU vs Illinois was not my expected matchup one year. But it was the Sugar Bowl, and New Orleans for 5 days

Rose Bowl--plus the parade before--was amazing yet I didn't care about either team that was playing

I am a guy who has seen our Vols play in every SEC stadium except Vandy. I just love college football
