Where are the "Martin can't recruit guys"

With the curse hanging over the UT programs as of late, I have a wait and see attitude on Stokes. There's still a strong Scotty Hopson hang over on the BB program. I'll have to see to believe.

I hate UK as much as the next guy, but I wouldnt say CCM out recruited Cal if Uk didnt even offer.

For those who think KY didn't offer Stokes, this comes straight from the KY Recruiting website:" If he chooses to play starting in the spring of 2012, he would provide an immediate frontcourt boost to whichever school he ends up choosing. Kentucky is amongst his list of finalists, but the Wildcats do not have any available scholarships remaining to offer this year."

KY DID offer him a scholarship for the 2011 class and wanted him to enroll and be part of the 2011 class. DOn't say "UK didn't offer"

Congratulations to Cuonzo Martin for the hard work he did in getting Jarnell Stokes to join the University of Tennessee basketball program.

I agree that CCM basically had this one fall into his lap, but here's the thing. He didn't blow it. CCM closed on a 5-star recruit. He took advantage of Stokes' eligibility situation and outrecruited two pretty good SEC coaches in the process. It isn't completely his accomplishment, but it's still a pretty damn good start to his tenure at UT.

Yes. Gorockytop is right. In evaluating his first class which includes Stokes he also signed Josh Richardson who was ranked #121 out of 150 on rivals. He's proving alot of people wrong about his recruiting. He's done pretty darn good for the first 8 months on the job. And he took over a disastrous situation. He has come through with shining stars considering. Now going forward he has to add more star power to get us eventually to the Final 4 which is where I want the Vols to go. Ha. :dance2:

Stokes was a good get. It's his coaching that has me worried.

It is amazing how far some of the negas will go to discredit CCM in his recruitment of Stokes and the outcome. If Stokes had gone anywhere else, even having to sit until the 2012-13 season, it would have been "well see, CCM can't bring in any BIG FISH"!!!! Yet when he decided to come to UT because of CCM, it is only because of some great galactic alignment of the stars and he had no other choice. Stupid is as stupid does, and that thinking is just stupid! Great get by CCM and the Vols. All you negas can put that in your pipes and smoke it awhile. Go VOLS!!!!

He chose Tennessee over Mike Anderson and Arkansas and 2 time National Championship coach, Billy Donovan and Florida. And they both had schollys to offer, as well. Pretty good for a first year coach, imo....

Great pick up.
I agree, coaching is my concern. Just have to see how they develop the rest of the year.
Based on recent years it is hard to get used to. I was at the ETSU game, and it gets frustrating to see a coach sitting down. Pearl was engaged the entire game. Who can forget his sweat suit at Florida? Martin can be seen sitting much of the game, and even when standing he doesn't seem particularly engaged. Not saying that this makes or breaks a good coach. But I do know that the good ones in college seem to always be on the edge. Maybe Martin is Phil Jackson.
Plus, the team seems to be a mess at times on both end of the floor. It seems that UT gets beat when the other team is fundamentally sound. there were a couple of points in the 2nd half where ETSU took it deep into the shot clock, running a weave way out beyond the arc. only to see UT totally break down in the last 5 seconds for an easy basket. Where as, when UT holds the ball long, it only seems as if a breakdown, or turnover is more likely to happen. I haven't seen near the activity I expect from a motion offense. And I've seen UT make inferior opponents look better than they are on offense.
Last but not least is that they do not pressure the ball. Golden was constantly a good two feet off his man, and I never saw him agressively pressure the ball. I think your PG has to pressure the ball on D. And thus their PG was able to survey the floor and often drove the basket scoring due to the cushion. I think Golden's man had 19 points and 7 assist. Not sure how a coach that emphasizes half court D can allow his PG to play so soft.

UK never offered Stokes and Stokes was never, ever, ever, going to go to UK even if they did offer. (Cal wouldn't risk the rejection by Stokes, which I assume is why he never offered.)

Arkansas and Florida has offers on the table, but weren't big players with Stokes, especially Florida. Stokes flirted a bit with Arkansas, mainly because he got A LOT of attention from their fanbase. But Arkansas was always a distant third.

It was a Memphis, UT race for months. UT led while Pearl was coaching, then Memphis led once he was fired, then things swung back in UT's favor once Stokes was ruled ineligible by the TSSAA. The stars aligned for UT in that they had an available scholarship for Stokes sitting around. He needed to play somewhere right away, and I think that put him over the top for UT. If he had never been ruled ineligible by TSSAA, he would've committed in February and his committment very likely could've been Memphis. Que Sera Sera.

I expect that the more "rank and file" Vol fans would bristle at my post. However, those Vols fans who have kept up with the Stokes recruitment for a decent amount of time and are able to take an objective look at the program will agree with me. It's not a slight to Martin or the Vols, it's just how the cards played out.

And most people are smart enough to know you are wrong.

1) UT was in his final three way before TSSAA ruled him ineligible. Which means we where a factor.

2) We were the favorite before Pearl was fired and you had no chance. Like, none. So it's not unreasonable to say that he came back to where he was going to go anyway after Martin re-recruited him.

3) Jarnell is a smart kid. He's not dumb or shortsighted enough to come to a school where he can play 10 games and possibly ruin his future. He chose Tennessee because he wanted to go to Tennessee. If he wanted to go to Memphis, he would have gone to Memphis. He could have practiced with them. I understand that he wanted to play, but you are completely underselling Jarnell and the fact he has been very careful throughout his whole recruitment, and he felt Tennessee was the best fit for him. That's it. End of story.

I don't totally disagree with his post...

It does come off as kinda whiny, though.

Was it a factor? Yes. Was it the only reason Jarnell came to Tennessee, as he portrayed in his post. Absolutely not.
