Where is freshman Mike Matthews?

I agree. We have arguably the #1 QB in the nation and only 2 passes over 20 yards last night. This needs to get resolved.

They were playing a 3,3,5 defense. If you don't understand that means they put 5 guys back in coverage to cover our 4 wide receivers. They were telling us that you are not going to beat us throwing deep. That's why we rushed for 249 yards. When we go against a defense that man's up with our receivers you will see how good they are.

Yes, if defenses give Nico the middle of the field in between the hashes it'll be a devastating day for them.

Tell me u don’t understand football without telling me… Huepel was taking what the D was giving him. They were determined not to give up the big play and their DBs are the strength of their D. SMH

State runs a 3-3-5 Defense. Tend to limit deep shots in general. That why we ran so many 2 TE sets. Could they have been better? Sure but not the best game to judge them off of.
I was certainly happy to see the TEs get involved. The new AL Xfer was a great addition.

Still disappointed VOLS couldn’t find a way to have more success with deep balls.

Nico completed 16 passes and completed 70% of his passing attempts and the Vols dropped 51 and won by 41 points. I'll take that all day everyday of the week forever.

He did throw 2 picks, he's a freshman. It's rumored the 1st pick may have been tipped? Bru did stop his route and Nico expected him to extend across the field, which is what Bru should have done in all that coverage. Nico may have thought the safety was going to keep sliding over to Nico's left. It's a play he wants back, but they happen to the best of them, especially a freshman.

The 2nd pick was totally on the offensive line. Nico's arm has hit by the defender and the ball was a wobble duck floating in the air for anybody's taking. Just a great play by the dlineman winning on that play.

As a whole, Nico was very mature, calm, cool, collected and in total control.....very impressive for a 19 year old in his 3rd start.....the most impressive part to Nico's game, in my opinion, was to not be rattled by the 1st pick at all. Just dusted it off like it never happened and stayed aggressive and wasn't fazed by it at all. Those are the types of mental edges the greats have over the rest ....
No…
Nico shouldn’t have thrown that pass over the middle even if Bru kept going. There were 5 defenders in the area.

Vann was right in front of Nico. Either eat it or pull the ball down and run left.

Both could have been prevented had Nico made better judgments.

As you said, he’s still young and his toughness is very underrated. He still has a ways to go but he’s a Unicorn for sure…

We are deep at WR. Wouldn't surprise me if he redshirts
I’d still be somewhat surprised, but the fact that it’s even a possibility a kid with that kind of talent redshirts while the likes of OSU and Bama are starting true freshmen wide receivers tells you a lot about our room.

I hope OU sells out to stop the run in a couple weeks so we get to see Thornton and Bru dunk all over them.

First, Nico is going to be good but he is not the best QB in college football right now. Second, watch the games, NC St was playing deep and was not going to let us beat them over the top. That is one reason we ran so much. The WR are good. I guess people have to complain about something.

Nico was just a bit too flat on a pass where Thornton was 1v1. Had he put a little more air under the ball and released it about .5s earlier, it would have been a 15 yard TD. He threw an INT on the next play.

Watch Aaron Murray's analysis. The WRs did a good job finding pockets in NCSU's coverage, Nico was exactly what you would expect. A RS FR in his first real test of his career in his 3rd start. Nico will settle down and teams will be forced to move more than 5 in the box and rushing 3-4 max.

TL;DR we took what the NCSU D gave us. It was a selfless gameplan where the WRs were instrumental in run blocking. The TEs and RBs feasted on delayed releases where NCSU lost track of them. It is what it is.

He’s been nursing a hamstring for weeks now! VQ has reported this numerous times.

Already posted elsewhere, but dammit, if this is what it takes to kill this ugly new trend:

Enough already with the "Where was _____" and "What happened to ______" and "The _____ situation" threads.

It’s like these people just sit around twiddling their thumbs looking for irrelevant **** to worry about. It’s insufferable.

We just smashed a ranked team by 7 touchdowns on a neutral field (in their home state). If you’re looking for absolute perfection in the box score every week, stop watching sports. Life in general doesn’t work like that. Get over yourselves.
