Where is freshman Mike Matthews?

I agree. We have arguably the #1 QB in the nation and only 2 passes over 20 yards last night. This needs to get resolved.

It's called taking what the defense gives you instead of forcing the issue. The game was over midway through the 3rd quarter, and subs were in much of the second half - a dream scenario.

I guess I'll never get the idea of looking for something wrong when watching the game revealed the obvious fact that CJH saw what the defense was willing to give up and jammed it down their throats, taking a couple of shots when they were there. There are going to be weeks when they want to take the run game away, and then we'll see the WR's eating.

Josh has never had a TE room like this one, so that's also a big factor. It was game 3 of Nico's career as well, and the first real test with a full roster - let him settle in and we'll see chemistry develop with the WR's as we go. Damn, it's a long season that has barely started.

Don't remember calling anyone out specifically. Maybe you should read some of the posts that are posted just in this thread alone. Much whining about the WR or that WR, or our OC not knowing what he is doing, or WRs can't get open, why with a STACKED WR room and the best QB in the country, why only 2 pass plays of 29+ yards. There are several posters that you just said need to be institutionalized.
Maybe lack for deep balls has to do with the way defenses are defending the Vols. That was the issue a lot last year & it seems to be the way NC State played Sat night. Nico will pick teams apart if they chose that strategy this year.

Nico said the mistake he made on the INT was he “didn’t take what the defense gave him”. Listen to what is said. Sometimes, not always, but sometimes it’s pretty revealing what happened

Where is freshman Mike Matthew’s? Highly rated four star wide receiver. Has he played yet?
I believe is has not recovered from his preseason injury. If ilingers much longer, he may play in only 4 games late in the year. If that happens he could still redshirt. I am not sure if playing in bowl or playoff games count against the 4 game limit.

We scored 44 points offensive points and rolled on offense all game. We didn't throw it deep because their defense was playing to take the deep shot away. So we ran it down their throats for 250 yards.

There is, as they say, more than 1 way to skin a cat.

NC State was dropping 8 defenders in coverage most of the night but you think we should run the ball less and throw downfield more when our leading rusher is averaging almost 7 ypc and we are up by 3+ scores? Nahhh

Anybody here telling me VOLS pass offense will be fine and Heup is just throwing the short ball underneath because if the 335 still think we’ve got a long ball game?

If they don't put him on the field they might as well sign off on the transfer, he's in the same category as Williams at Alabama, we just don't have a precision passing game to let him onto the highlight reels,

Not many people agreed with this when i said it. Turned out to be 100% fact.
I think things would have been different with a healthy squirrel. And I am not convinced that Bru was ever fully back from his injury prom the previous season.
But yeah, we need a couple of WRs with that extra gear of speed.

Im guessing you can see why now.
Not really. We got beat. NO ONE expected us to make the playoffs this year. 90%+ of the fanbases in college football would have loved to be where we were. Unlike you, I don't want us to take a step back. We are just starting to see where this team is headed. I am stoked to see Nico's progress next year after his first year facing real pressure. He is more comfortable running the ball now, so it should be very fun. The only thing that can derail my enthusiasm is the malaise of NIL and transfer portal. VFL is a thing of the past. Only players that stay the normal span of time should ever bear that moniker. full time fans should also get the handle VFFL (Vol Fan For Life). The veterans of fandom should hand out the ranking and determine when someone has lost that right.

From where I sit . . . He is on the verge of being another 5 star bust.

We will know early next year.

Studs like Ryan Williams and Jeremiah Smith have already declared who they are - dominant players.

Matthews may be a good WR (probably will be).

Call me skeptical that he will be a game changer. It has to be concerning that he could not get on the field among this medicore bunch this year. However, I did hear he had injury problems.

I’m starting to believe CJH is as loyal to his upperclassmen as he is to his asst coaches. I find it hard to believe our Freshmen are that far behind everyone else’s. The only other possible scenario is poor development and creativity by the coaching staff
