Where Were You March 3 1979?

On tour with THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND as owner/president of Mountain Sound - we had the Charlie Daniels Band and the MTB on tour doing 150 shows a year with each band. - On March 8 we were in Vancouver, BC and March 19, 1979 we were in Portland Oregon - I don't have a list of all the dates and shows but we were typically on the road for 28 to 30 dates and back home for 10 days between road trips.
I turned 33 on March 24 that year and will be 76 in a couple of weeks. - I doubt I was even aware we had won that year - rock n roll & the road are not conducive to keeping up with current events.MTB and crew.jpg

We have a winner. That is pretty cool. They should have sung Rocky Top (was it a thing then? I think Rocky Top came after '79)

In full transparency, I wasn’t a UT fan yet. Unlike most here, I didn’t grow up a fan, my love for UT actually happened after I finished my college career in 1993. March 3, 1979? I was watching the last year of Wayne Yates managing the tigers into the ground, only to watch the rebirth of a program the next year under Dana Kirk. The last 29 years of ups and downs with the Vols have been some of the most rewarding

I was in my 3rd year in industry with a BSChE from UTK. Might have been working graveyards that week on a turnaround at in Plaquemine, LA.

Still in school.... Sidebar, just realized our student number WAS our social security number.. Right there on the face of our ID. How times have changed.
Bernie and Erny were fun to watch. Stokely rocked. Got to admit though, this years team is special.

Gosh, haven't seen one of those in awhile! I just remember Reggie Johnson and I loved Don Devoe!

I watched the game with my dad at my uncle's house...I think that is the year we beat Kentucky 3 times...

I remember it well. Just like it was yesterday. I was not long out of school and in Knoxville. While I remember where I was, I don’t remember how the evening ended. Nice to be young. Being a lifelong UT fan but born in Kentucky, beating UK three times was just the best. I told my daughter when we were at the Auburn game this year when they introduced Don DeVoe that he was my hero from having beaten UK 3 times in 1979. That tourney championship was in OT IIRC. Beating them 2x and winning the SECT in 2022 is very sweet. I think I will remember how this day will end but I’m a little older now.

Yes, that tournament game went to overtime...
