Where would we be...

He almost lost too Pitt?

And would of lost to Saban 60-7, if Saban didnt call his dogs off.

Call me crazy, but notre dame had its best season since 1993.

I don't know what that means, but my guess is there is some improvement going on at notre dame.

It's just a guess though.

I'm not saying Kelly isn't a good coach......but he isn't as great as people make him out to be.

On VN, it would be no different...."Gundy/Strong just gets it" repeated over and over, which is understandable because anything over the last regime is an upgrade.

I was thinking the same thing. If we had Gundy, Volnation posters would be glad UT didn't hire Jones or Strong, etc.

If either Strong/Gundy took over our program in comparison to what Coach Jones has been able to do?

And yes I am full butch before people say who cares just throwin out a hypothetical to pass the time

Passed out, lying face down in a ditch somewhere with water running through it.

start a list of coaches across the country you would rather have and it isn't going to be very long.

not to mention, to inflate the list it will probably include names like les miles and mark richt, people who are constantly lampooned on this board.

Sumlin yes

Kelly showed he aint worth a sh&t in that NC game..

The NCG doesn't say anything about Kelly as a coach. It just further confirmed what we already know about other conferences and programs... they're still playing catch-up.

Tressel was a good coach; still got hammered by UF and LSU. Stoops is a good coach; still got beat by UF. Brown is a good coach; still got beat by Bama. Chip Kelly is a good coach; still got beat by AU.

If Kelly played in the SEC, he would of went 7-5 at best.

Ehhh... Maybe 8-4, if he is really lucky

If Kelly coached in the SEC with blue-chip SEC players and a year's worth of SEC competition, he likely contends for the SEC title.

On Strong we'd be hearing "He gets it" and we would have slogans like WE'RE GOING STRONG good stuff plus Volnation would have a lot to work with. Gundy would have been a lethargic misdirected mess...he left his alma mater for money? How can we trust him?...He's a mercenary....Where's the integrity?...At least Dooley could recruit...I seriously believe Gundy would have been a disaster and I would have been all in. Glad we didn't have to find out.

Better question, what if Ham Bone would have hired Sumlin Or Kelly when he had the chance?

Very happy with this hire. I loathe the off season.

If Kelly would have been hired we would have been in the same shape as we are now. He would have took off as soon as ND came calling.

I agree on Strong. We'd be hearing the exact same things. I disagree with you on Gundy. I'm sure this board would be saying the same things (night and day difference, history of winning, can't say anything bad about him until he coaches a game, is he the next General Neyland?, etc etc.) as we hear with Butch. I think we'd be hearing about our coach's great intangibles even if we hired Jerry Sandusky. If this board proved anything during the Dooley years, it is that the capacity for delusion here is truly limitless.

Um, I'm just going to state the obvious here... CBJ just told all of VN we are not very good, but working on it. He stated (paraphrasing) we are not physical, in shape, and do not execute well on either side of the ball.
We need to worry about getting some talent in here and that includes all 22 position, or we will still suck and CBJ will be beaten down by our "awesome" "fan" base.
Then we're back in search mode...just remember this when the L's start coming or after we win 1 we're not supposed to and you go and raise your expectations only to be humbled...long road ahead be patient VN.

Hmmm, sounds familiar...Has he said "year zero" yet?

He also said that we can be a "good" team but the margin of error is very slim, with the implcit, but unspoken, message that we are going to do every thing in our power to eliminate those errors. That's what I call "shooting straight" with the fanbase.

Gruden......soon?

I'm totally kidding btw.

Right now, though, I don't think either would do any better to this point than Jones has. I think Strong could potentially match it, but Jones' recruiting so far blows Gundy out of the water.

Yeah, but how much would you pay to see gundy lose it on the Knoxville media

I know said you think we'd have finished off the 2013 class better with Strong or Gundy. We'll never know. However, Butch and Strong were pretty close/equivalent with 2012 class iirc, both in the 50s I think.

So far this year...
Butch #5
Strong #43
Gundy #38

Just sayin'

It's just a guess. Strong and Gundy were coaches with bigger names, and that's why I thought they would have recruited better in 2013. But it sure is hard to top what Jones has accomplished so far in the 2014 class.
