Which Freshman QB is better?

Posted this in another thread, but I think it fits here as well.

Just a break down based mostly off of things heard through go vols extra and coach interviews.

-Ferguson was complimented by CBJ during fall camp a day or two as having "really stepped up." This is why most assume he has the advantage over Dobbs.

-Ferguson supposedly has the strongest arm of the bunch. Some have compared him to Tyler bray in that his arm is strong enough that he likes to challenge the defense as take some risks.

-Ferguson is a scrappy kid with a winners mentality. He won almost every game he's played since middle school. In several interviews before he stepped on campus, he stated his main focus was to "get on campus and win the starting job."

-Ferguson competed and did well at the Elite 11 competition, despite having a broken thumb on his throwing hand. He showed some grit and determination in that.

-Trent Dilfer, who saw both Dobbs and Ferguson at the Elite 11 described Ferguson as scrappy a "gamer" who finds ways to win and Dobbs as a "silent assassin" and very cerebral.

-Dobbs showed out during the open practice with a nice deep pass and a scramble where he shook Jaron Toney. Worley afterward complimented him and noted that they've seen him have some nice scrambles and moves throughout camp.

-Dobbs and Ferguson have similar straight line speed, but Dobbs has been described as more athletic and fluid. He has a bit of shake and bake in him, but he is by no means Mike Vick speed wise. Think more along the lines of Chris Leak.

-Dobbs may be more athletic, but Ferguson definitely has the speed and athleticism to run the read option and pick up 4-5 yds when the defense leaves it on the field for him or exten some plays with his feet to make some throws. He's still a pass first guy.

-Dobbs ran the scout team offense last week, mimicking Mariota for the defense.

-Coach Jancek commented last week that Dobbs have the defense some fits running the scout team. Said he took off with the ball a few times and looked athletic.

-Dobbs has been on campus longer and supposedly has the playbook learned down pat (though he hasn't always executed in practice). Not surprising from a kid who learned his high school playbook in a day.

-Ferguson and North practiced a bit together before stepping on campus in the spring/summer. They may have some chemistry because of this.

-Dobbs received some first strong snaps at some point in camp and made a few positive plays, but he fumbled a snap and has supposedly had some trip ups with such things throughout the fall.

-The coaches have made the QB live on a lot of Dobbs's snaps throughout the fall, presumably to gauge his scrambling ability.

-Both Dobbs and Ferguson have split reps with the third team for 90% of camp.

Those are all just snippets that have come out through various media sources, but obviously none of us know how they look in individual drills or in practice for the most part. It's hard to say definitively who looks better in practice or is ahead on the depth chart because neither has gotten many reps ahead of another and we haven't gotten a chance to see either live against a starting defense.

Johnny Manziel didn't look good in practice either his freshman year. Wasn't even guaranteed the job as RS freshman. My point is, you never know how these guys will do in a game. There are some guys that just turn it up a notch in game action.

Really find it hard to believe he's not good in practice. Dude has to run in the 4.3's.

Ferguson better arm only by a little & Dobbs more athletic only by a little. Both of them better arm and more athletic than Worsley. So the starter has to be Peterman, right, it's not that hard to figure out!!

I don't know who's better. But which ever one gets the start saturday I just hope and pray they can pump some rythm in to the offense. Worley had his chance maybe one of these young guys will suprise us. Go Vols

Who knows. All I have to say is whoever "Gives their all for Tennessee". I was at he Oregon Game this last week. I am not a expert evaluator of talent but Dobbs looks like a SEC QB. Very tall and just looks fast. Needs to fill out a bit more but that will come in time.Coach Jones will figure this out. You have to believe he will not be embarresed like that again. I am looking forward to the best man to win and improve our team. Whomever wins out. It may take a few weeks for CBJ to settle on it. Coach gets it and he will figure it out

Does the wide receiver who beat us in KY the last game of 2011 have any eligibility left? He looks/ed better than Worley. I have no idea which is better, but one of them has to be better than Worley. I hate it for him, but he don't have it. My revised prediction for the season is 5-7 or 6-6. Off subject, but Lane should start a rb and get most of the snaps.

I think some people have caught a little bit of Manziel-itis. Now everyone thinks a Freshman QB will be able to beat AL on the road and win a Heisman.

Im picking sides.. but I like Fergusan. The kid doesn't lose(HS ball I know), has the confidence and a cannon of an arm. I like Dobbs too but I hear more about Fergusan doing good things than him. However, all that being said, i'll take anyone but Worley atm.

From the video I have seen, I think people are are off some on the arm strength. I think Ferg's arm strength is better than Dobbs by quite a bit. I think its not as close as some describe it.

If CBJ decides to go with a freshman QB which one do you think it will be? Who do you think is better and gives us the best chance to beat Florida?

Leave Worley in for the Florida game, until the game gets out of control. Then put a freshman in. If he can't get it done, put in another freshman. If that one can't get it done, then put in another freshman. Until all three have played some games in the season.

This season is a wash anyway. No one reasonably expected to win more than 5 games. Any more than 5 wins means you are hoping for a 6th or 7th win but realistically, 5 is all we will win... We should be able to win those 5 games with anyone at q.b., so it doesn't matter who starts, as long as it is not Worley-Bird!!!

I'm not sure I follow your logic.

This season is already lost, so burn redshirts (future eligibility) haphazardly.

I have to respectfully disagree with many on this board...

After watching senior highlight film of both Dobbs and Ferguson; I 100% have faith that Dobbs gives us the best chance to win.

He shows good pocket presence, has solid arm strength and can RUN. He makes good decisions with the ball and gives any team he's on a better chance to win.

Riley is a tremendous athlete and shows great potential as well, but in the first few mintues of his film I witnessed him haphazardly sling the ball in the air multiple times. This works in High school against inferior talent and coaching, but not here. I question his decision making.

Proof is in the pudding:
