Who covers Wall when we play the kitty-kats?

Seriously, has no one watched us play Memphis the last four years? This board is full of people worried about what bad things will happen to us or how we'll screw up too much. In case you missed it, we have played Memphis fairly well defensively and Cal has not really hurt us with his offense. We'll play Wall as we did Rose, with a sagging man-to-man, and force outside jumpers.

I think Wall and Bledsoe are a lot quicker than the Memphis guards we've faced (at least as a duo) but too be honest, I aint that worried about any guard Kentucky has. Yes. John Wall is pretty good but man oh man..that was UNCA. The same UNCA that made Scotty Hopson look like Reggie Miller. No worries until I see Kentucky play decent competition.

We zoned Rose, a lot.

Comparing the offensive skill of the two teams is effectively retarded. Memphis' post presence was the least offensively minded group ever and besides Rose and CDR, they couldn't score.

With the way UT defends(I use this term very loosely), I don't understand why they won't run a lot of zone. Especially with the size they have.

Because our lackadaisical rebounding would get worse. We're picking our poison, but the man tends to better support our uptempo game.

play soft man on him and force him to shoot. Play some zone b/c they really are not good at the three-ball. I'm also worried about who is going to guard Bledsoe, he is quick.

If you have watched, we are not that bad either. Team is shooting right at a 40% clip from 3. I'm not saying were above average because were not, just saying don't buy into the whole "they can't shoot it" theory. Can they come out and go 1-20 from three? absolutely. They have also shot over 50% from three in several games this season.

Also, with the zone concept, its not like a road block. Where you put the "closed" sign in front of the lane and automatically he will look for a detour, which is chucking up shots. He will still find ways to penetrate the zone, or at least try. Which leads to my next point....

If Wall and Bledsoe (which both have done this season) continue to go head first into the lane trying to spin and juke (football term... yes), and turn it over then we have a problem. Bledsoe has shown the tendency to do this more than Wall, trying to do to much with the ball when its simply not there.

Its going to be interesting to see how it all plays out.

With our guard play right now, they won't have to spin and juke, there will be an open lane for them.

i say this.... lets run the F out of them like we did to Durants Texas in CBP first year.

no slowing it down... no stupid azz flex... just press the F out of them. turn it into a ridiculous track meet.

i'd be preparing the guys to run 3 or 4 types of half court D's... maybe a run and jump, a 1-3-1 trap... a soft sluffing man.... and maybe a straight 2-3 zone... and then are straight up man D. keep changing up the D's when Cal tries to slow the game down.

i think if we have the will power... we can out run them... and maybe confuse the freshman with multiple D's.

if it becomes a half court game... it's gonna be REAL ugly.

You think a half court game turns ugly? What do you think would happen if we pressed Kentucky for the entire game? We would be blown off the court in a heart beat. I expect Pearl to mix up the press and guarentee we see it very little against teams like Kentucky. That's going to be the problem in the SEC. I don't think our press is nearly decent enough to be effective with the good guard play we'll see. That's why the half court better improve if we want to even consider thinking about taking the SEC this year.

I agree with a lot you say here. Kentucky has shocked me from how they've been able to produce from behind the arc. I think Pearl minimizes the full court and mixes zone and man to man. Kentucky has seen plenty of open looks from a lot of zone and the penetration/kick out. I'm going to keep my eyes on the UConn game. I look forward to seeing how UK does against their D.

it turns ugly cuz there's no way we can compete with them in the half court. i just think patterson, wall, and cousins ... and bledsoe will just kill us if we play a half court game.

if this team could really press... like 05-08 teams... i think we could wear them out... i don't think cousins and patterson really want to sprint up and down for 40 minutes.

but you're right... if our full court pressure is just mediocre... they'll just dunk on us the whole game.

Pressing isnt the answer. The shooting ability of Dodson,Miller,Wall, and Bledsoe is to good behind the arc i dont think zone will work. I think we have to take our chances and man them up and see what happens. Bledsoe will turn it over in a second just like the other posted said he is wild and reckless. Its going o be very difficult for anyone in SEC to compete with their atheletes.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the game to tonight also. I have watched UConn this year and I've watched them run two different presses (2-2-1 and 1-2-1-1), and a pretty good 2-3 zone. Walker and Dyson are both good on the perimeter.

I wouldn't be suprised to see some teams "rush" us in a disguised 3 quarter/half court trap. Once the ball is out of Walls hands, it sometimes turns into a crapshoot. Bledsoe does not value the ball as much as he should.

I hope we take the open set 3 when its available. I just don't want us to settle for contested 3's early in the game and dig a hole. Hopefully we exploit the rebounding advantage we have. UConn gave up 18 offensive boards to Dook, which is not good any way you spin it.

Pressing isnt the answer.

this is the quandary we have with CBP as our guy. with him and this team... our best chance IS TO PRESS and SPEED up the game effectively.... because that is what CBP knows how to do best.

like i said... if our pressure is mediocre... then we are doomed.

i wish bruce would run different half-court D's. it can really be an effective assault on a teams rhythm and mental focus. when you never know what's coming... pressure man, zone, trap... it's hard to get into rhythm. Kentucky would be susceptible to this.

No one covers him. Goins and Maze try and fail to stand in front of him.

I would like to see JP Prince play defense for a game, but I am beyond frustrated with him.

Durant wasn't at Texas Pearl's first year.

We have no choice but to play a zone. We're getting killed by the pick and roll now. Imagine Wall and Patterson running it. We must stop the penetration first and force them into shooting. I think our interior D is good enough for UK, it'll just be a challenge to control their guards. I say continue with the press and drop back into a half court zone.

did we beat them with or without durant i don't remember. we beat them with durant in CBP's 2nd year then?

doesn't matter... after watching UK... er uh... John Wall tonight... unless our team delivers a performance we haven't seen since Lofton/Jajuan... it doesn't matter what we do we are likely to get crushed. pressing sure doesn't seem like it will work with smith/chism and company... god knows a halfcourt game will be "wall drives and scores" and "chism for 3".

since pearl thinks tyler is an nba point guard... maybe he'll put tyler on him the whole game. LMFAO.

We don't have anyone that can cover Wall, last night was the first chance I had to watch him. This guy is a stud, he will burn anyone we will try to put on him. It was fun winning the East but I am pretty sure those days are over. That is hard to admit, I hate UK and probably hate Calipari more.

"Those days are over"?

Pearl has beaten Cal with less talent before. He has also beaten Billy D in years when no one else could.

Finally Calipari will lose J Wall, Patrick Patterson and possibly another 1 of his stud freshmen (Cousins probably, not Bledsoe) to the NBA after this year. That means that his stranglehold on the SEC East even if he wins it one year will not be a long term thing. Even if Worldwide We$ brings him Selby, Selby is not close to Walls level. Besides, we will have better point guards than anyone outside of CJ than we have seen in a long time next year, and the year after with Ware we will have the most talented kid we have had running the PG spot since I have been alive.

I agree that those guys will go pro, and don't get me wrong here I hate Cal and UK. But do you think that when those guys are gone that his recruiting will all of a sudden be bad? Cal will always have players at UK. I just don't see us winning the East very often if ever as long as he is at UK.
