I'm not saying we were in a great place when Butch arrived but I have zero doubt we were in a better position than Stanford was when Harbaugh arrived. And it's always harder to build a Stanford up no matter what P5 conference they're in then it is UT. They're competing for recruits in the same state as USC, UCLA, Cal, Oregon and the rest of the country with the added burden of strict admission requirements and strenuous coursework. I highlighted the "weakness" of the Pac-12 to emphasize how bad of a state Stanford was in when Harbaugh got there. They were so bad they couldn't even compete in a weaker conference.
How in the world do you think Harbaugh would have had more success in the sec than at Stanford? I can't recall Stanford ever having the toughest schedule in the nation. Butch beat USCe that was in the top ten his first year. I think they were 6th or so. It would also be very difficult to run his offensive scheme, really any scheme, in year two with the line we have. Remember, harbaugh liked to have two tes, wing, two backs behind qb and run power. Then rely on a stout defense to shutdown opponents. The first year of CBJ we had a defense I could outrun. The second year, I wouldn't exactly say we have a powerful oline, and we have not had two healthy tes the whole year. He would have struggled just like CBJ has.

If Dan Mullen goes anywhere it will be to Florida...
I honestly think Michigan is going to throw everything and Ohio State's scalp to Jim Harbaugh in hopes to get him and then settle for an unkown. I said this in another thread, the AD does not want his head on a pike for going after Butch Jones. For good or bad he's Tennessee's coach for the foreseeable future as far as UoM is concerned. Their fans are even more delusional (and much more violent) than UT's.
Wouldnt be surprised to see them at least talk to Greg Schiano unless he damaged his brand irreparable at TB. Hes more of a Rust Belt/Big 10 guy. Same with Bielema whose name I thought would come up before Butch for this one but perhaps not.
Wondering if they go after Stoops at Kentucky? He's from Ohio and played at Iowa I think.
Mich is easily a top 7 job.
Facilities, academic's, tradition, instate recruiting and revenue.
Every article I've seen consistently puts Michigan in the top 10 college programs of all time. Of course, those same articles also consistently put Tennessee up there as well. UT has the facilities, the tradition, and the revenue. Is Michigan a hot bed of recruiting? I've never heard that to be the case, but maybe it is. Of course Michigan would have competition for those in-state kids versus Michigan State. Michigan State is quite a bit better than Vandy. That just leaves academics. I'm not sure where exactly we stand vs Michigan on that front, and it's just too late to care enough to google it. That said, I've always thought academics may sway some football recruits, but for the most part it's overplayed. I could easily be wrong, but scandals like the academic fraud at UNC make me think I could be closer to being right. Most talented players just want to get to the NFL and get paid.
All that said, both may be top ten all time, but neither is top ten currently. To say Michigan is a top 7 job as if they're somehow currently better off than Tennessee is laughable. I think they're just as radioactive as we were when we hired Butch. I like Butch, but being honest, there's no way he was our first choice. I don't see Michigan getting their top choice either. I think they fall a ways down their list, but I don't think they go to Butch Jones. This year would have had to gone a lot better for them to call him up, imo. Whether or not he would leave, who knows? There are certainly strong ties there. But his record isn't strong enough to sell to the UM fanbase. They'll go with a mid-major coach with a better record before they'd go with Butch.
