Who is the worst/most over rated football coach to win a national championship?

Lavelle Edwards and the 1984 BYU cougars. They struggled to beat an unranked Michigan team that finished the year with 5 losses.

grow up and stop with the antagonistic fulmer hating threads

if you cant respect our history you are not a real fan and should be banned from neyland.

is there any doubt why this thread was started and left in the vols forum instead of the ncaa forum ? hmmmm

the AP title was around long before the BCS and will be around after. To say it's not legit is a little crazy

Yes AP was around long before the BCS, but the winner of the egg (BCS Champion) is supposed to be #1 in all polls.
I think ABC really pushed the AP vote so they could brag about how USC (a team they covered all year) was going for three in a row.

Yeah, it was ridiculous to give USC a share of the NC that year when they didn't even have to play in the NC game. I don't believe anyone else has gotten a share of it since 98 except for USC, but I could be wrong. If we are going to go by the BCS, then we need to go by the BCS. If they want to be giving shares of the NC to teams that don't even have to play in the championship game, they need to do away with the BCS and go back to the old way, IMO.

supposed to be #1 in the polls included in the BCS (but do you think all the computers actually abide by that). The AP is no longer a part pretty much because of that year

No way fulmer is "that" overrated. He was HC for 17 years and his record speaks for itself. Not his biggest fan, however i doubt he deserves to be in the top 10.

No, the Coaches only voted for LSU because they were forced to.

Dare I say it? Vince Dooley? I mean, Herschel Walker really won it all...

I kid, of course.

I suppose a case could be made for LaVell Edwards as well if we go back longer. Possibly most-undeserving at least.

LaVell Edwards really was a great coach, but he did not deserve the 1984 national championship. He had teams that would have beaten his '84 team by two touchdowns, but were never in the hunt for a national championship.

The problem in '84 was that no one really deserved it. Florida was probably the best team, but they had a loss and a tie, plus they were bought and paid for. Washington was 11-1, but they'd pissed away the Pac-10 title at the end of the regular season, and the Pac-10 wasn't very good in '84. No one else had less than two losses, except for BYU and its dubious 13-0 record. So LaVell got it by default.

Larry Coker is the worst coach to ever win a national title, hands down. No one else is even in the family portrait.

Mack Brown!!!!!!!!! I could win a NC with all that tallent in Texas. He should have won alot more than one. IMO

All in a two horse conference. He's got a 0.0000 winning percentage against the SEC elite in the biggest games with a month to prepare.

Since this thread was about dissing Fulmer's championship, it's an Epic Fail. Stoops will be HoF bound. The 1998 team was one of the most deserving championships in recent memory. We beat something like five Top Ten teams and eight bowl teams. No one can take that away from Tennessee, and no one can throw anything that sticks on it.

Yeah our first 2 games were against the 2 teams that played in the Orange Bowl. Not too shabby.
