Who is the worst/most over rated football coach to win a national championship?

are we just talking the situation with the linemen

or the current state of the team entirely?

I came in late, so I thought it was the latter

Well kinda both I guess. I mean he was responsible essentially for 2 top 10 classes while he was here. The players played more disciplined football than I've seen in years. We were a lot more competitive for the most part last year. I just don't get the idea that Kiffin had a hand in why UT has fallen off the map.

Against who? Saban? Meyers? Richt? Who?

Saban and Meyer came in in the last few years of his tenure. I believe he did pretty well against Richt. Like I said, it was time for him to go, but I appreciate what he accomplished in his career at Tennessee.

I would rank Fulmers National Championship over any other coach's NC that-
A. did not have play a conference championship game
B. Won with the last coaches top recruits
C. Didn't go undefeated
Definitely disagree about A. Just having a championship game, although an extra test, doesn't just put it in front of every other team without one.

As far as B and C, I'd generally agree, but there can definitely be exceptions to the rule. For example, if you win with the old coaches players who sucked before you got there, you deserve credit. If you take an NFL roster and win (IE: Coker), you don't get so much.

That being said, our 1998 team deserved it, for sure. Beat 3 BCS teams and one 8-0 team.

3-5 against Richt. But, that might qualify as "pretty well" for you. It was for years for the Fulmer fans.

You've got to give DD a lot of credit for the 2010 class. It would have probably ranked higher if Kiffin had of stayed, but who knows. DD saved many of the recruits, that Kiffin and Ogre tried to steal on their way out. He also brought in several others. The 2009 was highly ranked, but it did not address many of the glaring holes that needed to be filled.

i know some of you guys are still mad at CPF, but can you really put him on there?

He went undeafeted with his own players, not even Spurrier and Meyer did that, Sabans MNC LSU team had one loss.
Granted he got some luck in the Arky game as well as played FSU with a scrub QB.

Its not like Bama didnt have some luck in there run last year as well as beat a backup QB in there MNC game.

I just cant see how you can put the man on there. I understand being mad at him and the last 5 - 6 years were pretty lousy, but im all ears for the guys who put him on there.

I think many have the impression that a lot of that success was the result of Cutcliff. Fulmer's win lose record with and without Cutcliff is pretty telling...

Fulmers last 2 recruiting classes produced one starter. Kiffin got us one without even being the coach on signing day

Kiffin also bolted from the team and left it in a complete shambled mess, including leading to more players leaving and several major recruits decommitting

....seriously, between the two coaches, what we've got currently is like 6 of one, half dozen of the other

Let's take an in depth look at that '98 squad

Tee Martin- bust
Travis Henry- multiple children
Travis Stephens- bust
Peerless Price- bust
Ced Wilson- multi year career
J. Copeland- never made it

Not that great afterall.

Youre kidding right?

DD did do great. Major props for that. Kiffin's class would've been top 3 or 4. But, you're right. Dooley did well.

I'll tell you one thing though about Cutcliffe, he sure knew how to beat UGA like a drum

You may be right, but we will never know. I just wish he would have focused more on our needs rather than the big name guys like Nuke and BB.

Youre kidding right?

Bust is wrong

but he spent his career pretty much as a #2 WR....then when he was moved to #1 WR in Atlanta, he just didn't cut it, he wasn't effective any longer

not bust definitely....course not superstar either

JaWuan James
Zach Fulton
Marques Pair
Chaz Green
JerQuari Schofield

Brandon Willis
Corey Miller
Jacques Smith
John Brown
Arthur Jeffery

Etc...

You've got to love Cutcliffe.

I mean it was great to see what we did to them in 06 - as good as UGA was at the time - we didn't blink when they got up high in the first half, cut into it, and then beat the tar out of them in a ridiculous feel good fashion in their home stadium

Then, when our team started off so poorly in 07, we still beat UGA bad :)

.....god I loved that WR (Lucas Taylor) reverse pass to the downfield, wide open Lamarcus Coker the two times we ran it; great play
