Why do y'all say GT sucks?

If I had to guess, it's 2 things:

1. The reputation of cut blocks

2. A lot of people get caught up in recruiting rankings and simply dismiss teams based on that.

Believe me, I've taken notice of how dangerous of a team GT is. I started watching and listening to games from last year like the Georgia game because I wanted to see all the long faces of the bulldogs fans and laugh at Uncle Lou losing his mind about it. I watched them dismantle Kentucky in the bowl game. You have a great team, although there are some question marks around certain areas of your team for this year. I think we as vols fans and vols players should have learned to respect the lesser regarded teams like App State from the last year's opener. I was told by a Bama fan I work with that Saban scares his team into thinking they could lose to anybody and that is supposedly why they destroy any team big or small on their schedule. Never mind being 3 deep with talent. I don't necessarily buy what he said to me. But it is interesting that a team that is stacked with talent could play so scared to lose, they blow everybody out. I don't like Bama but I respect them. The opener for Tennessee and GT will most likely be a dogfight.

Here's the list of teams who suck, according to VolNation, in 2017:

Georgia Tech
Indiana State
Florida
U Mass
Georgia
South Carolina
Alabama (even if they beat us by double digits, someone will say it)
Kentucky
Southern Miss
Missouri
LSU
Vanderbilt

If that looks suspiciously like the list of teams we play this year, well, yep.

So that's by far the primary and #1 reason people on these boards will say Georgia Tech sucks.

The cut blocking, quirky offense, different conference, former SEC member, didn't win a title recently, etc., are all just convenient hooks. There's some legitimate dislike behind some of them (esp. cut blocking), but they're all really just supporting facts.

It's all about you being on our schedule. Two years ago, no one here even thought about Ga Tech enough to say you sucked. In that light, we're a little like the boys on the island in Lord of the Flies: if you have our attention, you have our disdain.

Not necessarily admirable, but true. It's VolNation.

[I personally like Ga Tech, always have. As an engineer, I feel natural affinity for the school. Army Corps of Engineers even share cultural ties with Tech ("Godiva was a lady who through Coventry did ride..."). Good school, good people.]

Go Vols!

GT is much better than vandie. That said, the Vols should win by 20. Speaking of "suck", the YouTube "dis is why you suck" about ga bulldogs is a classic!:hi:

I don't get it, we get this often from other teams as well. Is it because of the offensive system and because people don't like the cut blocks? up until 2015 we were tied for the most active consecutive bowl appearances. We won the orange bowl in 2014 with 11 wins. We have been below .500 only once in recent years. We had 9 wins last year with 3 coming against the sec east. We hold a 5-5 record against Clemson and a 5-5 record against FSU since Paul Johnson has been our coach. So why do people say we suck when these facts are more than most other teams can say that we play. Imo it's a misconception based on the fact that we run the offensive system we run, so a lot are just uninformed about us. If there is actually reason why people say this besides, because we cut block and run the system we run (which are not reasons a team would suck) please tell me. Not trying to start anything, this is a serious question.

I also expect GT to be a tough game.

I also agree that cut blocks should be banned.

Too many kids get hurt really badly from those and some kids lose their entire football future from getting hurt so badly.

I'm hoping for a great game, a Tennessee Win and nobody hurt.

VFL...GBO!!!

It is just an assumption after scientists proved all the trees east of tech lean slightly to the west and all the trees south of tech lean to the north.

The teams have moved to west and to the north and are starting the study anew. So, while it hasn't yet been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Georgia Tech sucks, it's not looking good.

But seriously, just because a few Georgia fans put on Tennessee shirts and come to Atlanta yelling, "Tech sucks!" is no reason to blame us.

Tech only sucks until after the game. Unless of course they beat us, which means they still suck, but got lucky. Or they hurt one of our players, then they still suck and they cheat. It's the rules of fandom. As long as we win and no major injuries, then it's "good game" and " you have a great team, better luck with the rest of your season." We're reasonable like that. :)

I enjoy watching the tech system. Same for Air Force. Always have liked the misdirection, how multiple it can be. When it's executed well, it's a bear to deal with. Opposing defenses have to be disciplined and play assignments on every single down or they pop a long one on you. Really tough on the secondary. Start cheating and they lob one over the top and you look foolish. What's really impressive is that it can be very successful with average recruiting if you get the stars in the right spots. And best of all, unlike the passing game, it's dependable. Running attacks don't normally have off games.

Having said all that, I hate the thought of playing Tech. UT can have a player roll out of bed and tear an ACL. Shudder at the thought of the Tech blocking scheme vs our knees and ankles. Potential to be ugly on the injury front.

Hate to think of the first game as a must win, but if we drop the opener.......

What SEC teams? UGA? Vandy? Miss st? UK? we have a 5-1 record against these teams since 2014. Not to mention we destroyed vandy so i don't think they are on the same level as us.

You have a good record against the SEC because other than UGA, the same SEC teams don't play you every year. It is very difficult to defend the triple option if you only have to prepare for it once in a blue moon. But most of us don't think Ga Tech sucks. But these days the triple option is used by teams trying to compensate for a talent gap, so I think that is why some of our fans claim you suck. But most of us know this is going to be a tough game. And I think most of us wish it had never been scheduled. Not worth risking DLs in the season opener

Why do some vols think GT sucks?

Tenn team talent ranking in 2016 according to the 247 composite = #14
Tenn 2017 recruiting class ranking according to the 247 composite = #17

GT team talent ranking in 2016 according to the 247 composite = #50
GT 2017 recruiting class ranking according to the 247 composite = #47

Tenn has played a total of 1249 games in the history of the program.
GT has played a total of 1248 games in the history of their program.

Tenn has won 108 more games than GT. With 12 more losses GT will hit the 500 mark for total number of losses. Tenn is just emerging from the lost decade and still would have to lose 29 games just to get to 400.

Since GT left the SEC in 1964, the rivalry stands at Tenn 16 wins, GT 4 wins, and 1 tie.

Given that recent meetups are akin to the series counts for TN/Vandy or TN/Kentucky and since all vols know Vandy and Kentucky sucks it stands to reason that based on all relevant data GT sucks. Common sense. Intuitively obvious to the most casual observer. This ain't rocket science.

Because everybody we play sucks leading up to the game and you're on our board, what do you expect?

Truthfully most Vols are a little nervous about this matchup but you understand the lay of the land, right?

I haven't read anything suggesting Tech sucks on here lately, just a lot of posters believing we will cruise this game. I happen to think we will win because of overall talent but it will be close. We have a coach who struggles against teams with less talent.

I've ****e talked our past several opening opponents (USU, etc...) but I'm not as confident about the GT game.

GT by no means sucks. As a matter of fact they are a good football team. Any Vol fan who thinks we will just walk all over GT is delusional. This is a game we could lose very easily. Actually, I think we lose a close one to GT. I just dont have much faith in the defense and the offense has to replace about 95% of its production from last year.

You're going to be one of the first to call this resounding win a "so what! They're garbage". Calling it. :)
