Why do y'all say GT sucks?

The reason why you suck is because GT is a second tier team.

College football has a group of elite or nuclear powers and GT is not one of them.

This is why you can be happy with an 8 win season. Your goals include winning bowl games instead of winning nattys.

Also- the offense is one dimensional, and the defense is bad. That is a recipe for suckiness.

That said, this game could be very tough. TN is climbing back into that camp of elites (an honor that I miss dearly). Blowout victory against GT helps us get there.

I could be wrong, but I think most of us have posted confidence about the game, or strategy based on what we've seen. Also a mix of being nervous about defending the triple option/cut blocks. That's the bulk of Volnation threads on the subject... Can't speak for the rest of the country though.

Nothing against Tech, but cut blocking should be banned in football at all levels. Any coach that teaches it should be banned. Going for another players knees is evil and wrong, it causes far too many injuries. Blocks should only be allowed above the waist line.

Disagree but chop blocks should be treated with the same severity as targeting AND league officials should be able to hand down suspensions after reviewing video even if the block wasn't caught during the game.

I've honestly never seen anyone hurt on a clean cut block. Injuries are inevitable with chop blocks.

I don't get it, we get this often from other teams as well. Is it because of the offensive system and because people don't like the cut blocks? up until 2015 we were tied for the most active consecutive bowl appearances. We won the orange bowl in 2014 with 11 wins. We have been below .500 only once in recent years. We had 9 wins last year with 3 coming against the sec east. We hold a 5-5 record against Clemson and a 5-5 record against FSU since Paul Johnson has been our coach. So why do people say we suck when these facts are more than most other teams can say that we play. Imo it's a misconception based on the fact that we run the offensive system we run, so a lot are just uninformed about us. If there is actually reason why people say this besides, because we cut block and run the system we run (which are not reasons a team would suck) please tell me. Not trying to start anything, this is a serious question.

I don't think GT sucks as a football team; in fact, I think they have a pretty good football team. However, with their history of injuring defensive players they play against, they suck because they they cut block so much. Georgia also have a couple of players who seem to injure defensive players. That all sucks. When Franklin was at Vandy, their players did the same thing.

Also, read the paragraph posted below of what the ACC coaches said about GT's blocking schemes.

Here's the list of teams who suck, according to VolNation, in 2017:

Georgia Tech
Indiana State
Florida
U Mass
Georgia
South Carolina
Alabama (even if they beat us by double digits, someone will say it)
Kentucky
Southern Miss
Missouri
LSU
Vanderbilt

If that looks suspiciously like the list of teams we play this year, well, yep.

So that's by far the primary and #1 reason people on these boards will say Georgia Tech sucks.

The cut blocking, quirky offense, different conference, former SEC member, didn't win a title recently, etc., are all just convenient hooks. There's some legitimate dislike behind some of them (esp. cut blocking), but they're all really just supporting facts.

It's all about you being on our schedule. Two years ago, no one here even thought about Ga Tech enough to say you sucked. In that light, we're a little like the boys on the island in Lord of the Flies: if you have our attention, you have our disdain.

Not necessarily admirable, but true. It's VolNation.

[I personally like Ga Tech, always have. As an engineer, I feel natural affinity for the school. Army Corps of Engineers even share cultural ties with Tech ("Godiva was a lady who through Coventry did ride..."). Good school, good people.]

Go Vols!

You forgot that they have to troll Agnes Scott for women.

But pretty much every team cut blocks including UT, we just do it more often. I'll leave it at this though so we don't start another cut block debate lol.

Cut blocking in the open field or on a screen is fine. The defensive guy getting blocked can see it coming. When the linemans first move at the snap makes him look like he's diving in to a pool the arguement is warranted. Again, two different scenarios.

I don't think you'll suck. After last years demolishing injury list for us especially late in the season the last thing we need is to come out of this first game of the season with someone injured that could have been controlled.

There is no rational reason. This is fan message board and it's what half the fans on a fan message board do, offensive system and blocking schemes/philosophy notwithstanding. The other half of us very much respect GaTech and believe that Tennessee better bring its "A game" because we're very likely to be in a dogfight and will be fortunate to leave Atlanta with a win.

Was that a German witch doctor poster. Lol

Thank you! I was going to use him in the inevitable "bully" blowback posts! Witchie doesn't try to sell that schtick as how he talks at the office whilst selling widgets. :wink2:

If I need a widget built, or industrial measurements, you're my team.

If I need football, I'll take any number of SEC schools.

You're Vanderbilt, minus the prestige.

Their program is much better than Vandy. GT has a more recent national championship than Georgia does.

It's because GT chose to hire a coach to run an offensive system that doesn't rely on highly touted athletes. It works and it gets you some winning seasons and even conference championship games, but it seemed more or less as throwing in the towel and not trying to recruit top notch athlete's because of an elitist attitude of being academically superior. Just my guess. I don't personally think they "suck" and I don't necessarily agree with the points I've made above. Just offering an answer to your question that may not have been pointed out.

You beat 3 SEC East teams...let's take a look. You beat Candy when they were awful at beginning of the season and couldn't score 21 points if you gave them the ball on the opponets 10 yard line to start every series. Wow, so impressive. You then beat two demoralized teams in UGA and UK to end your season. I actually believe that GT is a fine football team and it will be a great game in ATL but I see a 10-14 pt victory for UT.

1.) Because GT is a middling program that plays in a high school stadium and is never nationally relevant.

2.) Top to bottom they usually field a team of mediocre talent that is somewhat masked by the fact that they run a gimmicky offense that's very hard to scheme for and as a result, they sneak up on teams that should never lose to them. However I also notice that when good teams get a fair amount of time to scheme for it, they take you apart.

3.) Your defenses are typically garbage. Offenses go through them like an Olympic bobsled team.

I guess that's OK if your goal is upsetting a higher ranked team once in a while. However until I start seeing GT playing in the ACC Championship game or in the playoffs, they will always be an "also-ran" program.

That, or keep your fingers crossed I-75 isn't a mess in Cobb County (it probably is) and drive up to Kennesaw State.

In all seriousness though, I don't think Tech necessarily sucks...if the OP is hearing that, it's probably a combination of factors leading people to that questionable conclusion:

- Gap in recruiting talent between the two schools (which doesn't always translate into a sure win)
- Relative unfamiliarity with the opponent and system they run
- A coach who isn't afraid to throw a few jabs at upcoming opponents
- A dash of homer-ism

That said, I'm cautiously optimistic that the Vols can win the "Battle of Megatron's Butthole" in September.

Techfan, I mean... you're on a free message board of your next opponent. It's college football in the south. You're going to hear some things said about your team that aren't so nice.

Does Georgia Tech suck? No. Are they elite? Of course not. Could GT beat Tennessee in a few weeks? Definitely. Is the cut blocking stuff overblown? Probably.

Is that about what you're looking for?

Tech doesn't suck. Their system certainly does.

Again... whoever signed off on this game should have been FIRED loooong ago.

IF the NCAA bans chopping, it would be fine with me. THEN I wouldn't mind it so much.

I figured we'll lose this game. We've lost every time we've played a decent 3 option team.

Air Force doesn't count. They weren't in the same stratosphere talent wise and STILL almost beat us and ended the career of one of our players that game.
