Why is everyone so excited about the game at Bristol?

It will be a factor, but that's it. Just one factor out of many! It won't be the sole factor, it may not even be a deciding factor. But it's certainly not a deterrent.

I agree its not a deterrent to recruits.

And I agree its fun for UT fans.

After that is where I don't really see any benefit, and at least a couple of concerns.

Do you honestly think that UT is footing the bill for this?

Not up front. I would assume, however, that gross sales from tickets and concessions will have deducted from them the cost of the facility, staff, the preparation of the place, plus a premium for whoever owns it.

Question: Will this replace a home game? Or is this in addition to your usual number in Knoxville?

We will still have 7 home games that year. Also, there's guaranteed money for the schools. Reportedly $4.3 million with that increasing if the game gets a title sponsor. The schools will also get a cut of concessions and merchandise sales.

As for BMS, this is just the first. They want to do it big and make it a semi regular event.

1) Iconic to who? Meh. No one cares outside of NASCAR fans and people who live in Tennessee. You know, basically UT's fan base already. Who, exactly, is this supposed to bring in?
I understand that you are liberal snob who has a certain stereotype about NASCAR fans.... but its fan base is HUGE.

Iconic to who? That is snobbish ignorance. Bristol is the track MOST NASCAR fans want to go to. It is the site of MANY memorable races.

I don't even follow the sport that closely... but DO have a realistic understanding of its popularity.

2) "Historic programs." Huh? VT hasn't mattered in 15 years and show no signs of ever being important.
More snobbery... but carry on.

You should have set this up with someone like Notre Dame. Now that would be a spectacle. But this is just .... so average.
Why would UT want to invite ND more than VT? That would be like inviting the cast of Jersey shore to a cattle auction. They wouldn't appreciate being there or really even understand the significance.

You are "average"... average snob... average Gator fan.

VT's fans will pour into Bristol as will UT fans... and likely people from several more states just wanting to be a part of that kind of spectacular scene and event.

Would LOVE to see this become an annual event between UT and VT or UVA.... or even UNC, NCSU, L'ville.

Lawgator1, the fact that this game will be played at a "race track" is non sequitur. The fact that it will be played at a venue that will allow us to shatter all existing college football attendance records is what excites us. I do agree, however, that, if this were to become a somewhat regular event, it should be reserved for the UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE to host marquis opponents, particularly those that they have never faced in a regular season game, such as Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, and Nebraska. Let's see if they still want to use the "we-can't-do-this-because-we-play-nine-conference-games-per-season" argument under those circumstances. The hype and associated revenue would be significantly greater than for Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech.

When you say (we) will shatter attendence record are you referring to Tenn since (we) are the stated home team?

I hate NASCAR. The only reason I think its good is because it will be the biggest ever audience for a game and a recruiting tool. I can't imagine that things won't be quite a bit better in 3 years. If Butch doesn't have us being spoke about in the same breath as Georgia and Florida for the SEC East by then something ain't right.

This assumes Tennessee football would be worth a crap at such a time, which we all hope is the case. Otherwise such a match up would receive no more national attention than say the UT-Oregon game got.

Well, first, let me assure you I am not the least bit jelly that your team is playing a crappy team at a race track and mine isn't. Ugh, why would I be?

Heck, we get you probably a week or two later. I am much more interested in where our programs will be then than I am your game against the equivalent of Wyoming, regardless of where you play it.

Second, I have no doubt but that your coaches will mention it to recruits. I just don't think that any 4 and 5 star recruits will care.

If youre a lawyer I wouldnt want you to represent me. Here are some facts. VT should never be compared to Wyoming. Check their record the past 20 years. Regardless of what you think theyve been a decent program

and...regardless of what GA or FL AD's think... having a game at a neutral site is a big draw for recruits. You dont think that ANY 4 or 5 star will care? Comical. Read the full article

These games are no different than kickoff games that are being played every year. We did the same for NC State last year and nobody questioned it. Bama does it every year in either Atlanta or Dallas and nobody complains. Besides, it doesn't replace 1 home game.

We play this neutral game at Bristol or we could have opted to play Va Tech in a traditional sense of a home and home series. Just like we did for Oregon, UCLA, Cal, Notre Dame and Oklahoma next year. We "lose"(for lack of a better term) a home game in 2016 but we "gain" a date on our schedule in the following year by not having to go to Blacksburg. It gets way more complicated depending on how we use the "gained" date in 2017. We could schedule a home and home series with someone else or we could schedule an OOC opponent at home that doesn't require a return trip to their place(South Alabama, WKU etc...) Either way it's less than 1 home game lost because we gain a date on the schedule the next year.

So... You dont think that ANY 4 or 5 star will care? Do you think your coaches mention to recruits that they will play GA in Jacksonville?

He won't admit it but lawgator is downplaying this whole thing just a bit. I agree that this and this alone won't be the deciding factor for recruits but it WILL be a factor! Think about it. The biggest and best athletes will want to play on the biggest stage! This will be something they will consider.

I stopped reading there.

For obvious reasons.

I stand by my statement that VT is about as vanilla, as mediocre, as uninteresting an opponent, as you could possibly choose for this.

I think their list of priorities might be something like:

1) Get me in the NFL.
2) Get me in the NFL.
3) Get me in the NFL.
4) Good looking co-eds.
5) Get me in the NFL.
6) Get me in the NFL.
7) Get me in the NFL.

183) Spacious dorm rooms.
184) Get to play at Bristol.

One man's "down playing" is another man's scratching his head and trying to figure out why people on here are arguing this would influence a 4 or 5 star recruit to go to UT.

As I say, fun and exciting for the fans. And I was evidently dead wrong about the money as you keep your regular allotment of games.

But I just struggle to envision some kid who has the level of talent you need here signing with UT because he gets to play VT at Bristol.

EVERY major college program can get players to the NFL. Tennessee (historically) has been one of THE best universities in getting players to the league. That's not even a concern. Plus, you make it sound like these player's parents/grandparents/legal guardians don't have an impact on their college of choice. I'll guarantee you that THEY aren't just thinking about "get me in the NFL."

Note; this really didn't have anything to do with Bristol, just a response to your post above.

Do I think it is going to influence a kid that has no interest in UT? NO
Do I think it might influence a 4* or 5* would has his finally 2 down to UT and SCjr? Sure why not?

And even if your right and the first 20 things on a kids must have list is get me to the NFL. A lot of schools put guys in the NFL.

Seems to be a strong odor of Troll comin from your avi today. :)

I think you miss the entire intent of this whole game.

Bristol, as you may or may not know, straddles the State line of Tennessee and Virginia. So Bristol Motor Speedway (or whatever they call it this year), is the perfect venue for a neutral site game between the powerhouse team in Tennessee and the powerhouse team of Virginia. I mean, we could invite The University of Virginia to make it slightly more fair...but they just haven't been as good in recent years as Va Tech.

You tend to sound more jealous that this is going on between UT and VATech. Are you wising your "pop a vein in my head" coach and your lizard team was playing it instead?

You probably should stick to the politics forum...

Find me a 4 or 5 star recruit on your list of wants whose family is going to attach significant interest in playing at Bristol over wherever that kid is most likely to make it to the NFL.

Just one.

Just one.

I can do better than that.

1. Dalvin Cook
2. Ermon Lane
3. Will Grier
4. JC Jackson
5. Chris Lammons
6. Khairi Clark
7. Quincy Wilson
8. Duke Lawson
9. Justus Reed
10. Taven Bryan

These kids are pissed they won't get to play in front of 155k. I kid of course.

Well your "statement" is really an opinion. You're entitled to your opinion. But after reading the 'Worlds Largest Tailgate' article... do you think these types of neutral games arent a draw for recruits?
