Public pressure? You think the German people care what Trump says? An American President isn't going to be to exert pressure through rhetoric on another foreign power strong enough to make them change policy.

They absolutely care. The German people are getting beat down with refugees. They will latch on to anything to stop it.

No. You blame the idiot that was pandering to the cameras and didn't want to wait just a few minutes for them to leave. It's not like the cameras were present for the whole meeting.

Nope. Perfect opportunity and timing. Go do a tad bit of reading. Trumps statements on this matter have been described as “kicking a hornets nest”.

It’s perfect.

This requires diplomacy which Trump seems incapable of.

Lol

The secretary general of NATO:
And we are going to discuss many important issues at the summit. Among them is defense spending. And we all agree that we have to do more. I agree with you that we have to do make sure that our allies are investing more. The good news is that allies have started to invest more in defense.”

Trump then asked why the spending increase happened last year.

“Why was that last year?” Trump asked.

“It’s also because of your leadership, because of your carried message…” Stoltenberg responded.

No, I have said it before, but the thing is that it really has,” Stoltenberg said. “And your message is having an impact, and we are going to build on that to make sure that we have further increases.”

But will defend being wrong with all he can Google......

He can google all he wants but I know several German people and they all love Trump and are very worried about their country under current leadership.

There heritage is being destroyed. Some of the videos and pictures they show me are crazy.

Lol

The secretary general of NATO:

I heard that exchange. He was placating Trump and feeding his ego. That's fine. Presidents as far back as Nixon have been calling for our NATO allies to spend 3% of their GDP as pledged. This didn't have to be public.

...and once again, there is no reason for the German people to respect anything Trump says.

Why aren’t those losers honoring their defense pledge?

I think I saw some of the same footage! Windows were being broken with buildings burned and people were being dragged from their homes and put in cattle cars. Oh, sorry. I guess that was footage from "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" I'm remembering.

Ah, the old "but I know people that say ...". That's fine if you're argument is SOME Germans like Trump. Not so good if the argument is most Germans or Germans in general like Trump.

Unfortunately this is a symptom of the disease of liberalism. Thinking that repeating failed policies will somehow produce different results

I agree completely but what do we do when using backdoor channels for years haven't resulted in increased military spending? Germany is, and always will be, the key figure for European security and yet the Bundeswehr is just a shell of its former self. A few years ago there were reports of soldiers using broom sticks for weapons and now news reports are coming out that out of 128 Eurofighters only 4 German planes are combat worthy that is totally unacceptable for such a country as Germany. I'm all for keeping our presence in Europe but if Western Europe refuses to meet their obligations than I don't mind cutting them loose and focusing on loyal American allies in the east and Baltic's.

‘They Will Die in Tallinn’: Estonia Girds for War With Russia - POLITICO Magazine

Why should we fund Western Europe's demise when we have people in Estonia who are willing to shoulder their responsibilities to the best of their abilities? One last point, I give Trump credit here, I saw a report the other day the US is exploring the possibility of basing troops out of Poland in the near future.

I have any problem with a full NATO withdrawal on the table during any "negotiation". In fact, any negotiating that occurs without such a withdrawal on the table would be done in bad faith.

I just think that as delicate, contentious, and monumental such a geopolitical decision would be, that such should be handled with tact and resolve (otherwise you will get another red line in the sand situation). My problem is that I'm not seeing either from the POTUS.

You don’t think Trump has resolve!?

You just cannot make this up.

Trump is a disaster. Come on! Get his azz out of there now! What an embarrassment he and the entire administration are to this country. Its pathetic.

You probably should go to the bathroom and check yourself..... something about your post says you might have touched cotton.... if you know what I mean

Trump's handling of this situation reminds me more of some drama queen taking what should be private conversations and instead talking $hit to her friends on Facebook for all to see.

And like the drama queen I'm sure he loves the attention he's getting.
