Will Dylan Sampson break the all-time, single-season rushing record?

Yeah if that kid was in the SEC he would still be giving every team fits. Amazing RB.

Dude's in bunker position. Only thing I can think of is he's entered that weird fandom mentality where the only POV of making positive observations about X player can only mean diminishing the accomplishments of Y player. (In this case apparently that's Sampson) It's nonsensical of course but it happens.
maybe im the weirdo here I can admit the other teams guy might be better than ours.. if they aren't actively playing us. This dude is guaranteed first-round material and that's not a common thing to say in the modern NFL. The few that do get drafted in the first are at the end of the round. With a lot of years, like last year, having none drafted in the first round.

Jeanty is as sure a first-round pick and high first-round pick as we have seen since Saquon Barkley. Sampson is probably a high second-round guy he will likely be the third or 4th RB off the board assuming all trends continue at their current pace. Jeanty could get hurt a few other guys including Sampson could have insane games and a great playoff run. Sampson and Jeanty are the top guys on playoff teams (BTW) the 2 at OSU are eating into each others stats.

That's right. The kickoff return was the opening kickoff vs. Alabama in 1928. According to this account, McEver engaged in a prelude to Babe Ruth's "called shot" in 1932:

Dodd's roommate the night before the game was fellow sophomore McEver, who wasn't scared in the least. As Babe Ruth would do four years later in the World Series against the Cubs when he pointed to the bleachers, then hit a home run to that spot, McEver displayed the same confidence bordering on cockiness. Referring to himself in the third person, he told Dodd, "If they kick that ball off to ol' Gene, he's gonna run it back for a touchdown."

In the locker room before the game the next day, McEver told his teammates, "If I get that ball on the kickoff, everybody try to cut down a man. If you can't cut down a man, just move over and let me through."

Sure enough, the Vols won the toss and elected to receive. As they went to their positions on the field, Dodd and McEver shook hands. What happened next remains one of the most memorable plays in Tennessee football history.

McEver took the kick on the two and behind good interference streaked upfield until he broke into the open. Two Alabama men snatched at him futilely as he raced to the end zone. Dodd placekicked the extra point. Just like that Tennessee led 7-0.
McEver recalled: "After our guys knocked down nine of their guys, I saw two Alabama players standing in the alley in the middle of the field. They were on about the 50y line. I went right between them, split them in half, bowed my neck and let them have it. That's all I could do. Then I was clear and runnig for the goal lie. I don't even know if anybody gave chase."

Alabama halfback John Henry Suther recalled: "In one regard, McEver was like a cannonball, literally rolling over people. Then he was like a bullet, too speedy to catch. ... His run kind of took the zing out of us and gave them a lot of enthusiasm. It was a wild scene that day. The return of the series was big news in both Alabama and Tennessee. I can remember being terribly excited the week of the game. And, of course, I never considered the prospects of us losing." See Clash of Titans
This is possibly the most enjoyable post that I have ever had the privilege of reading! Thank you!

And when has the NCAA been relevant in anything other than getting drug through lawsuit after to lawsuit to prove how illegitimate they are? The NCAA is a joke and everyone except themselves know it.

I’m not in a bunker position but whenever a conversation isn’t going anywhere and people refuse to admit your quality of competition actually matters then I’m moving on. I have better things to do than to talk about a kid in Idaho that will probably end up being an average at best NFL player. Feasting on the Mountain West isn’t doing him any favors and whenever he gets into the league he will be in for a rude awakening. Sampson is playing in the NFL Lite right now and getting better prepared for his future.

These people just want to redefine the meanings of words and phrases that fit their reality? 'That cup is empty because I say its empty anything less than 12 ounces in a beer can is empty' Like my VolPack impersonation?

All jokes aside bro you do you @VolPack22 you are certainly deserving to have your own opinion and I actually do respect it. It's just so fun to troll. I mean have an intellectual discourse with you.
If you were trolling you were doing a lousy job of it. Glad that type of stuff tickles your fancy. BTW whenever the SEC and Big 10 form their own division, tell Boise State they were never invited to be in major college football. I know you are a fan of theirs so the news will come easier for them coming from you.

Man, being in those kind of conferences sure didn't work out for Marshall Faulk, Eric Dickerson, Ladanian Tomlinson, Randy Moss, Brett Favre and Ben Rothlesberger. (Just to name a few)

And dismissing all else but ones own narrow parameters is pretty much the definition of taking a bunker position but hey, whatever.

Thank you very kindly. If you enjoy historical threads pertaining to Big Orange football, I highly recommend this one: "The Legendary Exploits of Doug Atkins." See The Legendary Exploits of Doug Atkins: Must Reading for young Vol Fans. It's old, so many of the links may no longer be functional, but that doesn't affect the entertainment value of these Ruthian stories about Atkins.

It's crazy to think Sampson already has more rushing TDs this year than Reggie Bush did in his heisman campaign.

We've had some great running backs in the 2000s, but there is just something different about the way Dylan plays.

A premier RB is a must for this offense. Every year of Heupels time here we’ve had a standout at running back and Sampson is taking good advantage of his turn in the limelight. I know he likely goes and gets paid next year and I’m excited and proud to have him represent us in the pros.

We are already bowl eligible so you need to factor in a 13th game at this point. He only needs 2 rushing TD to break the single season record set by Gene McEver in 1929 at 18. Only needs 8 more to break the career record also by McEver at 37. Considering his uptick in usage in conference games it’s not out of the question he breaks the single season carries record of 291 by Travis Stephens in 2001. He has been averaging nearly 25 carries the past 4 games and if he keeps that pace he would be right at 292 after 13 games. All in all, this will go down as the greatest single season rushing performance in program history if he keeps his pace.

Current 13 game pace for 2024:

267 carries
1556 yards
32 TD rounded up
Sampson probably won’t play in a bowl game if it isn’t in the playoff. Hopefully he can get 16 or 17 games in

Just skip over the fact he had 2890 all purpose yards 1740 rushing 478 receiving and over 600 returning and averaged almost 9 yards a carry.

That being said Dylan Sampson is a beast. I think his real value will be seen in the NFL because his game better suits that. Coming from UT is gonna be a good notch on his resume. We have had a great track record of RB's to the NFL and he is unarguably one of the best we have ever had.

If Sampson stays healthy and goes to a decent team it's hard to imagine him not succeeding at the next level.

He shouldn't if we are not in the playoff, and neither should Pearce. If you are projected in the top 3 rounds of the draft playing in a normal bowl game is more risk than reward. It actually helps your team you not playing because it allows them to play the next guy. Wins and losses aside. The real benefit of bowl games to teams is those extra practice sessions and the ability to play some guys you normally wouldn't because realistically the stakes of the bowl game are minimal. For players going in the draft unless you're a late round guy the risk outweighs the upside drastically.

Outside of WR and maybe OG, the best player(s) to ever play at their position played in a power conference. But by all means cherry pick a few of the exceptions.

It's adorable you think "the best players to ever play at their position" is now somehow a benchmark that needs meeting despite me citing actual HOF players. These goalposts are moving so much I'm pretty sure at this point I'm just being trolled.

I think it’s adorable that your care so much about a rando online to keep a conversation going that is going nowhere because I have my opinion and you have yours but nobody is going to change either’s opinion. The names you mentioned were not the best to ever do it at their position. They had great careers but they weren’t the best ever. There will always be exceptions to the rule, just like with anything else, but the vast majority went to bigger programs.

Yep...I'm being trolled.

Ah well, we're both Vol fans so we've got that going for us. Peace out.

That Jeanty kid really showed out last night vs mighty UNLV. Didn’t even get 4 yards per carry on over 30 carries 🤣

It's the worst, and is grounded in some sort of deep seated insecurity imo.

Definitely not insecure. Just proving that your level of competition matters the majority of the time. UNLV got waxed by Syracuse but held Boise’s superstar under 4 yards per carry and also had 33 carries. I was told he was doing all this damage with minimal workload but he has had 64 carries the past two games. Maybe people need to wait more than halfway through a season before they start anointing players.
