Will Meachem come back? (merged)

I think he's as good as gone, and I hope that the coaches are preparing accordingly.

Briscoe could be okay, and vinson is the wild card.

without meachem, though, we'll have to rely a lot more on the run and we'll have to incoporate brad cottam more into the offense.

We'll see what CTT is made of next year. He'll have the job of getting ready those guys that have been riding the pine. Also curious to see if he can get the 1-3 top WRs we have coming in.

He had 2 SRs and an NFL 4th yr JR to work with this year.

1. Taylor
2. Rogers
3. Briscoe
4. Shelley
5. Grimes
6. Hancock
7. Vinson

If you believe the "hype" so to speak, those 5 should be pretty talented...and from everything i've heard, Hancock is pretty special. Slick Shelly...haven't heard much about him lately...heard his name mentioned some last year, but has been a no show this season.

Vinson, if you believe the recruiting stuff, has a TON of potential.

in any event, all of them will be getting plenty of work in the off season i'm sure. i'm not going to say we're set at WR, but it doesn't appear that the talent drop off is all that far. Experience drop off is.

your're right about CTT...let's see how he does now....

I for one want him to. We could be sick on offense next year. But I dont think he comes back because next season could hurt his draft status. Think about it. Defenses this year couldnt really double team him because they also had to worry about Swain and Bret Smith. Next year, he would catch alot of double teams. Who else is a threat? Lucas Taylor? Josh Briscoe? I think Hancock will eventually be a stud but he wont come in next season and lead the SEC in recieving. The tight ends could help out alot but we only have one deep threat and proven WR. I think his numbers would drop and his status would also. I think the pro scout could see that, but still. I think he's gone but I will keep my fingers crossed that he's with Ainge next year.

I agree with you...I hope that he comes back; however, I think that any one or all three of the receivers you named step up next year. I believe that with or without Meachem the next two or three years could be special in a positive way.

If I had to guess I'd say Meach is 70% likely to leave, 30% likely to stay.

I doubt very seriously if Meachem knows whether he is staying or not. He'll first have to submit JR paperwork to the NFL for a draft estimate to even think about it. If they come back and say 2-4 round, who knows?

i think something we're all missing here is early projections a LOT of times change after a guy like Meach has an incredible combine. Stallworth dropped jaws with his time and I believe #3 will have a ridiculous combine, should he go. He's big, fast and can jump out the gym (remember he was gonna play basketball?). I think the knock on him now is his ability to get open in press coverage. He's a great run blocker and unstoppable with a cushion, just not physical with bigger CB's in press man. I dunno, I am an optimist but I think he has more reasons to leave than stay. Either way he is a class act and an outspoken Christian guy and I am praying nothing but the best for him.

Jake, Slick is coming of injury, but he will be a good WR for us.

I hope he stays, our offense will be wicked good next year if he decides he wants to stay.....I'd say if he came from a not so good financial background and has a kid though, he's got to do what's best for him

That being said though, wha WR's are going to be going out? Or expected to go out? I know of Calvin Johnson, Jayson Swain(duh) Doucett, and Smardzjia....Who else? If he wants the BIG money he'll stay next year, kick some tail and go out next year and be first round...But what was said earlier in this thread....2nd round money is still a lot of money

Word. He's about to break the single season yardage record. There's not that much left for him to prove.

The Vols all-time leading receiver, Joey Kent, stayed after his junior season (69 rec for 1055 yds and 9 TDs) to play with Peyton Manning again. His senior season (68 rec for 1080 yds and 7 TDs) was very good too. He was drafted in the 2nd round by Houston. Although, he never lived up to his billing in the pros, he got 2nd round money by staying another year.

Fresh
Joey Kent 10 rec for 209 yds and 5 TDs
Meachem 25 rec for 459 yds and 4 TDs

Soph
Joey Kent 36 rec for 470 yds and 4 TDs
Meachem 29 rec for 383 yds and 2 TDs

Junior
Joey Kent 69 rec for 1055 yds and 9 TDs
Meachem 61 rec for 1149 yds and 10 TDs

Senior
Joey Kent 68 rec for 1080 yds and 7 TDs
Meachem ?

Career
Joey Kent 183 rec for 2814 yds and 25 TDs
Meachem 115 rec for 1991 yds and 16 TDs

With 2 game remaining this season and the possibility of at least 13 games next year.... and only 823 yards behind Kent.... Meachem would almost certainly pass Kent and become the school's all-time leading receiver. Plus there is the goal of winning a championship.

He is currently 6th on the Vols all-time receiving yardage list.

1. Calvin Johnson JR

3. Dwayne Jarrett
4. Jeff Smardzija
5. Ted Ginn JR
6. Anthony Gonzalez
7. Aundrae Allison
8. Dwayne Bowe
9. Steve Smith

...and the list goes on. The question is, how far can Meachem move up the board in a good workout? It's sometimes a gamble because you have to declare before you get to that point. There are a lot of pretty good WRs out there.

I would say he falls in the 6-10 range in that list...Johnson, Baker, and Smardzjia are all playmakers.....Ted Gin has world class speed.....I'd say he's in the bottom half of that list but with a good combine who knows?

Sidney Rice has to stay, he's a Sophomore.....You can't go to the pros without at least being a Jr. am I right?

Oh ok, so he'd be eligible to go out.....I don't really keep up with that.....Oh well, if he does(Rice) then let him, that just means the Gamecocks will suck more than they have LOL

The smart thing for Meachem to do is sign an agent, drop his courses, and begin training for the combine upon the completion of our bowl game. Any other course of action would be reckless.

You are correct. For someone with a child to pass up financial security to entertain the fans in Knoxville would be asinine.
