Will Meachem come back? (merged)

I think Briscoe and Taylor are even or better than Austin Rogers. But Rogers is third. However, Hancock might have some input on that.

When Bret Smith was injured, who filled in? Austin Rogers. I didn't see much of a drop off, honestly. Briscoe and Taylor have been very inconsistent and seem to get pushed around. Both those guys are very small. I'd much rather have Rogers out there.

From ESPN - Kentucky game recap:

Meachem is a junior and could leave early for the NFL. Asked about returning for his senior season, he said, "Why wouldn't I?"

see Matt Leinart's 2004 regular season comments

I'm not sure what Leinart said in 04, just making a point.

You can't really compare the two. Vince Young won a national championship, and his stock was as high as it was ever going to be. Meachem hasn't won anything, and he could drop to the 2nd round.

He'll probably leave, but it's not crazy to think that he's staying.

It's not crazy to think that he is staying. However, it is a little crazy to believe anything that these guys are saying during the season, especially 30 minutes after the final game of the regular season. These guys know what their talking points are and they stick to them. You find me an underlcassman who will state, during the season, that he is heading to the draft at the completion of the season, and I will be shocked.

If you think Meachem is coming back consider that last bag of smoke you got to be good stuff. He's gone without a second thought once he can get his family financially secure for what will seem like a lifetime.

No reason to stick around. Another 3 loss season isn't going to do much more for him and the risk of injury is just dumb.

He's out.

He's going to be All-Vol until this season is over. Then, we'll see his true thoughts on the NFL.

If he does indeed stay- and we find a decent running game... WATCH OUT. The Vols will a very good NC contender next year.

From the Nashville Tennessean - "I'm going to go through a couple days of fasting and just let God handle that," Meachem said, referring to the NFL draft.

From God - "Meachem, play for the Vol's next year. I Have spoken."

Guys I think he will be back and here is why....

NFL Finances are based of of performance, and he has had one breakout season. Based on that alone it doesn't make him a top 10 receiver in the nation when it comes to the draft. Another thing is we haven't had a standout receiver like him since Marcus Nash and Joey Kent, and neither made it in the NFL. One season can help but he needs another one to be a Top 3 receiver and GET PAID. He can't base his draft stock off of this season alone. Plus, if we can be in the hunt for a NC next season then he stands having a better chance of being a media darling and gettting more hype which will help his stock ever more. Just because you have a child doesn't mean you quit school and go get a job.

I personally think he stays to prove to everyone that he won't end up a 2nd or 3rd string WR and can be a #1 receiver in the NFL.

I disagree on that. Troy Williamson had one good season for South Carolina a couple of years ago and he went 7th overall in the draft. It's about performance combined with how you do in the combine. If you impress like Williamson did, your stock goes way, way up.

believe he would be no better than a 3rd round pick in 07 but would be a 1st in 08.

Possibly 4th or 5th depending on Team Needs. That is exactly why he stays in school, finishes his degree, and GETS PAID after next season.

Plus he is a VERY FAITHFUL individual and that right there takes the money part out ALMOST completely. He believes in God, as do I, will give him the tools and prepare him to succeed in life in any facet he may want to do. I ASSUME he wants to play football, and if he is patient and smart which he is, he will stay for his senior year to get his paycheck up around the 10 million range.

I agree.....He'll get more money if he stays for his Sr. year.....Compare him and Leinart(different positions, I know) it bit Leinart because he had such a good year his Jr. year and stayed...But he had 2 good years before that...Meachem has had ONE good break out year, that don't mean he's going to go high in the draft....Mainly because there are a few WR's that are going out that are better and will go higher.....But I agree with what you've said....I think he'll stay if he knows what's best for him and get more money next year

Also remember that Meachem's run blocking is suspect and that is an issue he needs to work on before he goes to the NFL. If he gets just a 40-60 % improvement in that department from this past season he will be a Top 2 receiver next year more than likely.

Yupp.....Well that and I mean think about who all is going out this year....Like mentioned earlier in this thread, Calvin Johnson, Tedd Ginn Jr., Jeff Smardzjia, Anthony Gonzalez, Doucet.....I mean there are some good recievers going out, I would take any of those guys over Meachem...RIGHT now.....Ginn has world class speed, Smardzjia has one of the best set of hands I've ever seen....Calvin Johnson has all that wrapped up in one....So he's going to be the first one taken, IMO...Ginn might go before he does...We'll have to wait and see I guess

Wait a second.."FAITHFUL individual"s don't care about money? I'm just ribbing you a little here but I think this paragraph was mildly amusing. It's cool to read what some people think up. (Again, just discussing, not flaming you)

Why stay? I don't think anyone has answered that yet. Because he will improve? Is that not possible in the NFL? Because he'll make more money? It's not possible to improve and renegotiate contracts in the NFL? I just don't see him risking the money against injury next year. He can make a million dollars right now or come back, hope you play well and avoid injury all season long. The choice really doesn't seem difficult to me.
