Will Muschamp to UF

According to Gator Country, you would think Florida just hired the second coming of Knute Rockne or Vince Lombardi. All they did was reload at coach

They are just being homers. He has never been a head coach and they have no idea how he will do. One thing is for sure, he will be learning on the job. That is never a good thing when you are expected to win immediately.

There's no reason they should be settling for him as their head coach.

Maybe folks should not think that UF could walk into a meeting/interview and say we are UF be our coach. Sort of a media hype saying how awesome they are.

too early to tell how good of a hire this is

i can tell you that i prefer having muschamp in gainesville over petersen, stoops, or meyer

I'm surprised at Foley settling for this. There's no way he was the only guy they went after.

On Day 1, this is no worse or better than the Dooley hire. I was totally against Muschamp being the coach here, as I was Dooley. Only time will tell with both of them.

Although Muschamp is a defensive guy, I think what will happen is that Florida's offense will be straightened out first, but their defense might suffer. So often when you see a head coach with a certain area of expertise on one side of the ball, it turns out its the other side that prospers more under him (immediately thinking of guys like Chizik and Stoops).

I'll say I've never been impressed with Muschump as a DC tho. He may be fiery, and his talent laden defenses might put up nice numbers. But I've seen them torched enough times to not believe he's all that and a bag of chips.

Agreed. Having said that, I don't think Florida's defense is their problem. Interested in who the OC is going to be.

Obviously nobody knows what will happen, but my initial impression is that as a Tennessee fan, this could have been a lot worse. In no particular order, Stoops, Petrino, Mullen, Whittingham and Petersen all scared me more than Muschamp.

Think of it this way - Charlie Strong was widely seen as nothing more than a fallback option for the Gators, one that would have excited few with all the other names being tossed around, and yet Strong arguably has a better resume than Muschamp. Both were defensive coordinators at top programs, but Strong had two national championships to Muschamp's one (or maybe 1.5 as Strong was co-coordinator in 2006). What's more, like many say about Kirby Smart at Alabama, Muschamp was just a caretaker for what was really Saban's defense at LSU in 2003 while Strong ran the show on defense at UF. Finally, Strong has a year as a head coach to Muschamp's zero. Would any SEC fans have been quaking in their boots if Charlie Strong had been named the HC?

Not to mention that the bloom has come off the Muschamp rose after this last season's performance. The offense at Texas was clearly more the culprit in their demise than the defense, but that defense contributed its fair share as well. UCLA and Kansas St. both ran the ball right down the Horns throat against a defense with 7 returning starters and a ton of 4 and 5 star talent on it.

One last point - the most common praise I hear about Muschamp is his "energy." That he is a real high motor guy who fires up his players. Ask yourselves who was the last head coach like that who won a National Championship? Meyer was intense as can be, but he wasn't jumping around on the sidelines and yelling his head off, neither is Saban. Muschamp's style seems to be closer to Trooper Taylor's, Houston Nutt's or, dare I say it, Ron Zook's, than it is to those Saban, Meyer, Tressell, Carroll, Brown, Bowden, Bryant, Paterno, Johnson, etc.

This could have been a lot worse.

Or Mullen

That's the hire that would have scared me as a Tennessee fan.

Mullen's done an excellent job turning around Mississippi State in a short period of time. I could only imagine what he could do with Florida's talent...

Oh wait, I can. Two national titles and 2 SEC titles.

Somebody find the "real story" on a Texas or Florida message board.

1) Who turned Foley down?
2) Who all did they go after?
3) Where was Muschamp on the list?

ect....

You forgot:
4) Where did the plane go?
5) Who all was on it on their way back to Gainesville?

And, most importantly:
6) Did Gruden consider leaving Tampa?

LOL at UF for their "we can have any coach that we want because we are UF" attitude and then having to settle for a guy who has never been a head coach.

That's all.

That's all.

Especially when you got guys like Jessie "Rosie" Palmer getting on TV and casually throwing out names like Bill Cowher.

They said the exact same thing about Ron Zook. He could turn out to be a good coach, at will look great if he is with that Florida talent. But it is not who I would have picked. It looks like Miami is going to get a much more solid pick... LOL

Wouldn't it be funny if Vandy ends up with the best HC hire this year.
