Will Smith slaps Chris Rock

Try to wrap your mind around the idea that the joke went too far, regardless of the reaction.

In your opinion but it doesn't matter if the joke was over the top. It does not matter. It was a joke. He attended the event, he sit on the front row, he knew Chris Rock would be in attendance, the Oscars chose Chris Rock. Will Smith doesn't get to make the rules on what is acceptable unless you count him assaulting someone.

He appeared to be a broken man on the edge just listening to the excruciating speech he gave. I hope he's getting some help.

What does where WS is sitting have to do with whether or not the joke went too far? You make no sense.

The point is the joke went too far and whether or not you think that matters is beside the point.

There's a back story that goes back about 5 years when Chris Rock made a joke about Jada when she was talking about boycotting the Oscar's.

He basically told her that nobody cares if you're not invited. They are jokes. And that one was funny.

“Jada said she’s not coming, protest. I was like, ‘Isn’t she on a TV show?’ Jada’s going to boycott the Oscars? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!”

Anyone that has ever been at an event with comedians when you sit in the front then get ready.

A joke is not a threat. A slap is an assault. That's the bottom line.

You're assuming he knew about her condition. Otherwise it was just a case of putting one's foot in one's mouth. What went too far was the smith reaction

It went so far Will laughed at it before he noticed Jada didn't like it, then overcompensated with his silly macho "real man" response.

Look, I'm not saying judge CR like he knew. I'm saying the joke went too far because of its content and the circumstances.

I dont think the joke was that bad. Its alopecia, not some terminal illness. I assume if she was terribly self-conscious about it she would wear a wig. Pretty sure she could afford a really nice one.

JFC did you break into hives when Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes and Emmys?

I thought that was awesome. Making fun of questionable morals and practices is always fair game.

To be clear, I can say that the CR joke went too far without feeling any kind of way about it. I'm not upset by it.

On top of this, Rock may not even have written the joke.

Apparently Smith went to a party and acted like nothing ever happened. I think over the last couple of years people have learned just how weird this cat is. I'm not sure what happened. He appears to have some dissociative disorder. I think Jada is taking the guy down through there.

So all the stuff Ricky Gervais' has said at every awards show was all awesome, but Chris Rock saying 'GI Jane 2" to Jada Smith with alopecia "went too far"?

Weird hill to die on.

What did Gervais say that went too far? I'm just aware of the pedo rant.

You can tell by the collective reaction from everybody before Will Smith got up, that the joke went too far. Almost nobody laughed, it was awkward as hell. Rock was about as flustered by how badly the joke crashed as he was by getting slapped.

Your description of the event doesn't match the reality of what happened. People did laugh, not gut busting funny laugh but a laugh. The "collective response" didn't happen until they showed Jada's pissed face and then it was an "ohhhh man" type reaction. Rock was not really that flustered by "how badly the joke crashed", he was reacting to Jada's pissed face and no he wasn't as flustered as he was after he got slapped. He was struggling to even get back on script after the slap, at no point did he miss a beat after the joke. And awkard was after the slap....there was no real awkwardness before that until Will Smith realized Jada was pissed.
