Wiseman ineligible

For me to say "the NCAA doesn't care about the kids" as a blanket statement that's true about the NCAA.....I couldn't say that. I think there are plenty of folks within that organization that do care about kids, and probably others that may not.

People who benefit from the kids make money. They also write rules and interpret these rules as they see or want. And if you don't think some other schools, like UK don't have an influence on them, then we'll never agree. People for the most part only care about themselves, NCAA does not care about the kids.

I have zero dogs in the hunt and have a life long friend who was retained by PH from Tubby's staff so I certainly wish him no ill-will (and will not presume on our friendship to ask any questions) but to me the obvious thing must be that more information on the subject has come to light. If PH has misrepresented the facts then that's a big thing. Any reasonable person knows this deal has looked shady right from the start and as I stated when they hired PH (and I've been around PH some and actually liked him) Memphis was in a no win situation. THEY HAD TO HIRE PH AT THE POINT THEY DID. It was a HUGE risk that may "mess up" the program in the long run even worse but they're in bed with it now. Of course Memphis knew all this stuff had happened but again they were against the wall and hiring PH was the only thing that would let them have some breathing room. NO reasonable AD and University President is going to hire an AAU coach with zero college level coaching experience UNLESS THEY FEEL THEY MUST. I suspect the Tiger program may be in trouble after this but again the NCAA is an unpredictable lot for sure. And whoever advised to go to Jim Kyle to get a temporary restraining order just to allow Wiseman to play last night (in a game you win by 25 pts without him) has made the NCAA thing much worse. The NCAA statement released IMO is telling of the mood they are in over this.

If Wiseman wins his eligibility back, the so does UP. Wiseman offence >>>>>UP situation....

I agree. I also think UT should do this with Uros. Just my opinion. NCAA sucks.

Same here, Knucklehead. Especially while they have all of this other stuff going on. Maybe they roll over on Uros since they have much higher profile cases going on, and just choose to rule him eligible to avoid another fight with resources being spread too thin. It's worth a shot!

Everything you said......ditto.....on all statements. Good post.

If Memphis wins this, it will be a start of the NCAA to become insignificant. So they will have to change or die a slow death. Yes. It would be a good time for us and OSU to do the same.

It was not that the BBQ was in some form wrong, but rather during that timeframe in the calendar, coaches were not allowed to have recruits at their home. Pearl knew this and decided to chance it anyway, and paid the ultimate price.
I thought the Seniors could eat the BBQ but the player reporting Pearl was a Junior so BBQ is forbidden until they are Seniors. Read that again, and try to tell me it's not stupid and the NCAA has reason to exist.

I don't think they had to hire him. Plus all the info was given to the NCAA about the donation when they were checking his background. Why not do something then like say he is ineligible to coach if he is a booster? I do agree either it will be very good or very bad. I am leanig towards them winning honestly.

What if he did disclose those material facts as has been stated? What if the NCAA changed their mind 6 months later?

So you really think the 'AA is doing this because they "changed their mind"?!?!

I despise he 'AA and I think they are very corrupt but they are not stupid...the reasonable bet is that they received new information which gives them evidence of wrongdoing (e.g., no one can show where/how the supposed loan from Penny was ever repaid)

Certainly appreciate your opinion but trust me UM HAD TO HIRE PH. For several reasons one being a financial reason for sure. Of course there were others but no doubt PH had to be hired at that point. It was that bad. But I agree the NCAA is out of control as well. Bringing Kyle into it and all the ramifications that brings- well....not good at all. I just hope our Vols put a beating on them when they visit TBA! That's really the only thing that I care about involving the Tigers! :):)

I don’t get why there isn’t anyone talking about the fact that it doesn’t matter if penny was a booster or not.

When wiseman accepted money due to his basketball ability he forfeited his amateurism. It doesn’t matter who gave him the $

I live in Memphis so several friends are boosters. That being said I am surely not the end all be all. I just want consistency and fairness for all athletes. If it takes Memphis to try, then, so be it. I agree. It will be a fun game hopefully. But I wish/hope we could watch Wiseman and Uros.

Junior recruits were not allowed to attend.

Penny didn’t give the ncaa the middle finger.

penny said “hey kid come down here....I’m going to help my career off your back, and hey I might even screw your chance to play college ball in the process.......oh and I may screw other kids.....and the Memphis program to boot.”

That’s what Penny did.

To be fair, Penny did it when he was Wiseman’s AAU coach, probably well before he knew he might be the coach at Memphis. I guess there was always a chance because I believe his name was thrown out there when Tubby was hired, but it wasn’t a guarantee.

It doesn’t matter when he coached him or did not coached him. The fact is, Penny made a $1M donation in 2008. Per NCAA bylaws that makes you a booster. This law also applies to fans for what it’s worth. If you are a booster you cannot give a recruit(ie his family) extra benefits. Penny could have never been hired as Memphis coach and it would still be considered a violation for Memphis because once he makes that donation he is considered a booster. Everyone has known this rule for years and he decided to do it anyways. I don’t see a good outcome for Penny, Wiseman or Memphis in this one.

His parent's accepted it. He had no idea at the time. And both informed both the TSSAA and NCAA.

But none of that matters for wiseman specificity. Once he took money his eligibility was gone

The crazy part is the ncaa rules players ineligible all the time and then when the players pay back any issues they reinstate them.

If that happens here last night game gets forfeited and then once he pays back the money the rest is all good

If you know anything about logistics rates and moving, which I guess you don't, 11,500 isn't off. Lmao.
It’s REALLY off if you are trying to move and don’t have a bunch money....

If you work for a big time corporation and are a big time employee then sure...buddy moved from CA to TN and got about $3k from the military. I moved 800 miles a few years back and it cost me the $70/day for a UHAUL plus gas...why does Wiseman need personal movers and apparently to be treated like he’s a multi-millionaire being courted by a new company? He’s an athlete, he can’t help his parents load a UHAUL? GTFO.
