Wiseman ineligible

That wasn't my question. Has Tee Martin donated? Does that make him a booster? Can he still hit the recruiting trail without eyeballs from the NCAA on him? That's the precedent being set here.
giving an already shady family $11k to get a player to move to your AAU team isn’t the same as “donating to charity”. Tiger high has been caught doing this before

What about his family was known to be shady? And when was Memphis caught assisting other players financially?

Are you joking? Go back and read about finch and Kirk and Calipari and how literally their entire meaningless basketball program was built on cheating and weak scheduling. They paid players And families several times. They faked tests to get prop 48/GED kids like penny in school. They have never won any titles and are a midmajor who cheats to get what small successes they have had

As for wiseman, ask people in Nashville about his mom’s job change and how he suddenly went to an expensive private school

Of course you would. I for one am glad our players actually follow the rules and don’t have to cheat, but then again Tiger High’s entire meaningless existence has been cheating scandal after cheating scandal. Truly the armpit of the state

Lol. Tons of Vols in Shelby County, but keep crapping on it.

Ok? There are tons of Vols in Alabama,Mississippi,Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans, etc and they are all sh*thole places too. Memphis is a terrible place to live with high crime, high poverty, high corruption and ranks as one of the worst 5 cities in the country consistently

Rules got to be followed anywhere, only fair for all the players. That said, I am from middle Tennessee, been to Memphis a ton of times, gambled in Tunica a ton of times, nothing but good people . It is like any place, just use your brain when visiting any place you are not that familiar with.

Wrong. Roughly 7-8% of the UT student population at any one time is from Shelby County. Vols fans everywhere who spend money, travel, and support the school.

It’s always so funny to me that people want to crap on it when there is a lot of UT support. I don’t do the same for any other backwards County in the state.

I’m sorry you are from one of the worst cities in the country. But you are making excuses for wiseman and penny cheating all through this thread so it shows your integrity

Every town has its issues and Memphis has a few more than others. But I'm from Memphis (not the burbs) and had plenty of great opportunities from both an education and employment standpoint. For all of the problems we have, I'm happy to be from a place that's truly authentic.

Just quit. Freaking obnoxious. We get it.

Shelby County also has the wealthiest zip code in the state.
Yes they have lots of companies that make money off the corrupt officials there but yet have one of the highest poverty rates of any major city

I’m white, but I HATE racism, of any kind. And I will always call out actual racism.

People from different locations and different backgrounds must look at “people” not simply an idea or ideals, or simply locations.

It’s not about what a person wears, or where they are from or what color their skin is......it is about what is inside that person and their actions. Lumping groups into categories is also racist. Not what you said, as I’m sure people in Memphis (and many other places) feel this way.

We should also be empathetic to minority’s (those of us who are not). Not because they are different, but because they have had actual racism thrust upon them, and been judged by some simply because of a skin tone difference. However non of us should accept racism of any type, even backward racism......as it’s all part of the problem.

This is a good post! Well said.

Curiously, I did see where Ballin, in filing his suit on behalf of Wiseman, named both the NCAA and the University of Memphis as defendants.

Getting the thread back on track, at this point the NCAA simply needs to remove Memphis from it's ranks and forbid other teams under it's banner from playing them. The NCAA is a coalition of agreed upon rules put forth by the schools themselves. This is Memphis declaring war on every other school in the NCAA when it very clearly violated rules it agreed to play by. Since them to the bottom of the Mississippi and let them play the Harlem Globetrotters every night.

Yep

sooooo... can we get back on topic here? I can't tell how I think this ends up. I could see a scenario where Wiseman just has to pay back the money and maybe sit out 4 games or something and then reinstated. But the fact that Memphis basically just slapped the NCAA in the face could backfire on them. The NCAA could just say, well, you're not eligible for the postseason this year.

Very possible but they can do that. But Memphis has a good case. Plus the media seems to be behind as does fans of other schools. So that is a lot of pressure on the NCAA.

On topic, this is my prediction, and I feel like it will almost certainly come to fruition because the NCAA is too scared to follow through with the ineligibility punishment--Wisemen will "pay" back the $11,500 to Hardaway, the NCAA will revoke a scholarship, the NCAA will give Wisemen an 8-10 game suspension, UofM will be given a slap on the wrist, and Wisemen will be back to playing for Memphis before the calendar turns to the New Year.

Seems inevitable that Wisemen will not serve an entire year suspension.

For all of you too lazy to investigate before opining, let me list a few facts of this case. I do so hoping you will see the ridiculousness all our universities abide and are bullied by. We lost the best coach in our history to one of these stupid rules. It's hard to swallow, but if we can't support what this University, coach and player are trying to do, then no fair complaining the next time it happens to us...and it will happen to us.

1 Hardaway gave 1 million dollars in 2008 to build the UM Hall of Fame. He did so out of respect for his basketball coach and, I'm sure, had a pile of sneaker money that needed a tax break.

2 Hardaway paid moving expenses for James Wiseman's mom to move from Nashville to Memphis in 2017. Her son and daughter were living in Memphis at the time.

3 Hardaway was a high school basketball coach at that time. Tubby Smith had just finished his first of two years as Memphis' basketball coach at that time as well. Penny was not a coaching prospect nor was Wiseman a player prospect when this money changed hands.

4 All the above was disclosed to the NCAA in May 2019 before Wiseman matriculated and Wiseman's amateur status was cleared by the NCAA in written form.

5 The NCAA later notified Memphis they may have made a mistake in this declaration but said they will stand by their original decision to allow him to play.

6 On the day of the first game, the NCAA reneged saying Wiseman's amateur status may be in question after all.

7 Wiseman sued the University and the NCAA to be able to continue to play and won in court.

8 At this time, Wiseman has not been formally declared ineligible.

Memphis' argument is this:
Penny has spent and helped thousand of kids as an icon and a philanthropist.
Penny has not given money to UM in 11 years.
Penny was not employed by UM and Wiseman was not recruited by UM when this transaction occurred.
The NCAA was aware of all this information before Wiseman was a student and declared him eligible TWICE after knowing all this.

My bet is that it will be our "little brother" down the road whose balls make the world better for the rest of our Universities. I wish we had done the same instead being a coward when Bruce got screwed.

It is likely Penny was part of the eligibility review process in May that deemed Wiseman eligible

Since May, new facts including over $10k in payments, have been brought to light.

That means 2 things

1. Penny as a booster paid $$$ to a player
2. Penny lied to NCAA in May

Wrong.

All this was declared in May, money and all. The NCAA cleared him to play. The NCAA later declared they may have made a mistake but cleared him AGAIN. It was only after Wiseman had played his first game that anything further was said.

I agree with all of this. Very well said. I don't know you but I have tremendous respect for you saying this about other universities instead of looking at it as another dumb thing tiger high is doing.

Memphis's statement contradicts the Wiseman family's claim that the NCAA had all pertinent information as of the May 2019 ruling.
