Wiseman ineligible

I don't understand why people don't think this is a good thing. As OSD said, don't complain when a it happens to one of ours. And it will. Look at Uros. It will happen again when the NCAA wants it to.

I ask because I've read half a dozen reports, all slightly different, and none say that the money was declared in May.

For all of you too lazy to investigate before opining, let me list a few facts of this case. I do so hoping you will see the ridiculousness all our universities abide and are bullied by. We lost the best coach in our history to one of these stupid rules. It's hard to swallow, but if we can't support what this University, coach and player are trying to do, then no fair complaining the next time it happens to us...and it will happen to us.

1 Hardaway gave 1 million dollars in 2008 to build the UM Hall of Fame. He did so out of respect for his basketball coach and, I'm sure, had a pile of sneaker money that needed a tax break.

2 Hardaway paid moving expenses for James Wiseman's mom to move from Nashville to Memphis in 2017. Her son and daughter were living in Memphis at the time.

3 Hardaway was a high school basketball coach at that time. Tubby Smith had just finished his first of two years as Memphis' basketball coach at that time as well. Penny was not a coaching prospect nor was Wiseman a player prospect when this money changed hands.

4 All the above was disclosed to the NCAA in May 2019 before Wiseman matriculated and Wiseman's amateur status was cleared by the NCAA in written form.

5 The NCAA later notified Memphis they may have made a mistake in this declaration but said they will stand by their original decision to allow him to play.

6 On the day of the first game, the NCAA reneged saying Wiseman's amateur status may be in question after all.

7 Wiseman sued the University and the NCAA to be able to continue to play and won in court.

8 At this time, Wiseman has not been formally declared ineligible.

Memphis' argument is this:
Penny has spent and helped thousand of kids as an icon and a philanthropist.
Penny has not given money to UM in 11 years.
Penny was not employed by UM and Wiseman was not recruited by UM when this transaction occurred.
The NCAA was aware of all this information before Wiseman was a student and declared him eligible TWICE after knowing all this.

My bet is that it will be our "little brother" down the road whose balls make the world better for the rest of our Universities. I wish we had done the same instead being a coward when Bruce got screwed.
I agree with your statements about NCAA, Memphis opening up Pandora's Box, and the University Not having balls to challenge the NCAA; however, Pearl lied, Kiffin fiasco, and other intangibles muddy the waters and we lost our leverage to do anything because we were weak.

I believe that it was.

I think there is a lingering piece of information out there that caused the NCAA to change it's ruling so late, but no one is certain right now. UofM's statement seemed to imply a new piece of information that would have led them to sit Wiseman if the lawsuit hadn't been filed.

Wiseman's lawyers certainly seem confident.

As far as there being new information, I believe that is false. They said after interpreting the rule a different way they were claiming he 'likely' would be ineligible.

They certainly do, and he'll likely be declared eligible. Every article I've seen so far (and, for the record, I'm through looking) suggests that the money, or something about the money at least, was a recent revelation. Possibly that the NCAA feels that the nature of the monetary aid was misrepresented originally. That's really all I'm questioning in the blanket "they knew about the money back in May" statement OrangeSoddyDaisy made.

No one seems to be mentioning that Hardaway didn't just move him out of the kindness of his heart; he moved him so he could play for the high school team Hardaway was coaching. The TSSAA thought it looked fishy, but Hardaway wriggled out of it on a technicality.

Incidentally, I hope he is declared ineligible, because I don't want him playing for Memphis. And, I feel safe in saying that none of this has any effect on his future earnings, as, at this point, he'll likely be the first pick in the draft whether he plays another minute of college ball or not.

A timeline for James Wiseman, the Memphis Tigers and the NCAA

Per UofM

"Initially, after a joint standard eligibility review by the University and the NCAA, as is common for all high-profile incoming student-athletes, James was declared eligible by the NCAA in May 2019. However, based on information that necessitated a deeper investigation, the University began to work alongside the NCAA in investigating the matter."

Yea. Then he was cleared again. He was cleared twice. The third time he is deemed ineligible.

I'm not seeing anything saying he was cleared a second time. Just that he received a notice shortly after he was cleared that it was an error. Six months later the NCAA ruled against him.

It seems like his attorney's main argument here is that Wiseman should be eligible because someone accidentally clicked a button, but there's still a lot of missing info out there.

I would normally agree and this may be the case. Don't know don't care. The NCAA rulings are whatever they are feeling at the moment. That being said, a well known lawyer friend of mine, who is a supporter now of Memphis and used to be a coordinator for some P5 teams, says he should be cleared and he has helped hundreds of kids. Not my concern, I just want someone to take down the NCAA.

It's been well established at this point via both local and national sources over the past couple days. The NCAA looks awful here. Regardless of how we feel about Memphis, the NCAA has lost the Nationwide court of public opinion here.
You keep throwing out “we” but you became “we” HERE 2 days before the UT/Memphis game last year, and your passion for this injustice makes me think that isn’t a coincidence. Jmo

I inferred from the reporting that the "new" information was the NCAA considering Penny a booster in light of his 2008 donation. Once they considered him a booster, it changed their view of the money. But maybe there is something else/more.

I’m taking any reports of a timeline regarding what was known when and when he was cleared with a grain of salt. I think his camp is the side shaping that story and it’s going to be slanted to make his case sound better

That’s statement memphis put out tells me the story about no new info is very very fishy

Agreed. This is more an end result of one guy on the board's extreme visceral hatred of the city Memphis and most of it's "residents." At some point you just want to stand up for your own. He's on the verge of making me root for the tigers. 😂.
You're obviously a Tiger High fan. No doubt about it. Go.....enjoy your Tigers and all the crap coming down the pipe.

sooooo... can we get back on topic here? I can't tell how I think this ends up. I could see a scenario where Wiseman just has to pay back the money and maybe sit out 4 games or something and then reinstated. But the fact that Memphis basically just slapped the NCAA in the face could backfire on them. The NCAA could just say, well, you're not eligible for the postseason this year.
I think the NCAA statement after Wiseman played is a clear indication that Memphis basketball is going to be set back a few years.

Anyone who sides with Hardaway sides against Tennessee.
