WNBA discussion thread?

This is huge, they are saying BG is talking to other teams also. Maybe Taurasi is actually retiring!
Apparently BG is team shopping and DT is def retiring. CT got Tash Cloud and Bec Allen in the trade. Dajoni Carrington is also a free agent and team shopping. Both Phoenix and CT are going to be in deep rebuild next year. Can't imagine DB doesn't either retire or also sign w Phoenix. Lots of shuffling of older players.

Rumor is Satou is choosing btw NY and Phoenix, leaning toward NY since her sister plays there. Courtney Vander Sloot is also team shopping, but with far fewer options at 36. Just keep her away fm the Sparks, she is not the pg they need. Heard today Julie Allemande is most likely coming back to the Sparks this year and along w Plum would make a really solid backcourt.

Sky is looking for pg, has the #3 pick. Sloot has been mentioned as going there but I kinda can't picture it. Sky passed on resigning Chennedy Carter, even tho she has had an epic year overseas. Very good player, just too much drama.

Sloot to Chicago Sky as free agent, so no trade involved. Probably short term beneficial to Kamilla. Sloot spent yrs feeding Jonquil Jones. She is 36 and def on the decline though. And still doesn't address scoring forr them. They have the #3 draft pick though so could get Kiki.

Interesting to me that facilities seem to matter less than being near home or where players felt valued. Plum, BG, and Sloot just voluntarily went from the three best equipped teams to the three worst equipped. Not sure Atlanta has even paid lip service to building out and they play in a freaking barn.

Sloot left Chicago to go New York two seasons ago. I guess she wants to play her final season or two where she spent most of her career at.

While Tuesday night’s nationally televised Billikens game unfortunately went viral for a brawl in the stands (see below), we hope something more constructive was going on in Chaifetz Arena as well. Six-time Olympic medalist Jackie Joyner Kersee was in attendance for SLU’s win, seated in between billionaire Richard Chaifetz and his son Ross. The elder Chaifetz is one of the driving forces behind St. Louis’ nascent effort to launch a WNBA franchise in the city, and while we don’t know if Chaifetz and Kersee discussed the effort to bring a team to St. Louis, all we can say is: Wouldn’t it be awesome if they did? October’s announcement that the city plans to make a bid for the franchise was big news in large part because of the involvement of NBA superstar (and Chaminade alum) Jayson Tatum. And if one homegrown superstar involved in the WNBA bid boosts our chances, then surely having two homegrown stars would make it a slam dunk. —

Pat, Candace, Peyton, the Haslams, throw in Dolly and you pretty much have the ownership of Tennessee.

Would love a team in Nashville, but IMO they should go slow on all this expansion. I think it will water quality of play down. There are 144 for a reason. There aren't that many good players who either aren't on teams or are riding the bench to fill out all these rosters.

I like this idea and love the name. The fact two Vol legends are involved is awesome.

Oh yes! I would be a season ticket holder so fast. I do agree that there is a balance to expansion, but Nashville is hungering for a women's pro team. They keep losing out on NWSL expansion, which is a shame because the MLS stadium is nice.

Speaking of venues could they do something with the old municipal auditorium? They would likely need to bulldoze and start over.
OMG how I love the old municipal!! Played many tourney games there in h.s., have been to more concerts there then I can remember, mostly due to the amount of smoke I've blown toward the ceiling of that place.

AU basketball, the W's "other" offseason league is playing at the Muni starting next week so that's a real possibility.

Haven't read the story....... Assuming they will play at Bridgestone if the franchise is awarded?
That’s what it says but there is a partial overlap between NHL and WNBA season. Wonder if they could make the logistics of swapping out the hockey rink for a basketball court multiple times a year work. Though they do host the SEC men’s basketball tournament there during hockey season and it seems to work fine

I had a friend that was part of the in game ice crew for years. He told me they could have that place thawed and another surface down and in place to use by the next evening.

We took a tour once when I was a kid, and at that time they would put some treated newspaper-like material over the ice and then put the basketball court on top of that

Been a long time. Maybe I misunderstood and they didn't thaw but did this. Either way they can have it turned over for another event overnight which itself is impressive.

It could also be both, and that they thaw when the hockey team doesn't play for a while. Either way, that conversion has always been interesting to me

Actually the old Municipal did the ice to court transformation as well back in the day. Nashville had a minor league hockey team, the Dixie Flyers who played there. They simply put the court over the ice and puddles would often form during bball games. Not alot of player safety concerns back then.

I remember the South Stars and the Knights playing there. Dixie Flyers were before my time.

There’s a bid for Nashville to land an expansion WNBA team named the Tennessee Summitt in honor of legendary Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt and facilitated by Candace Parker and Peyton Manning.

Bill Haslam is the leader. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are also on board.

This is so exciting I made a thread for it.
