But then in 2001, the SEC had a huge budget cut and couldn't perform the necessary oversight needed to regulate the bond rating agencies and the resulting housing market crash. I am assuming you understand the bad loans themselves didn't crash the market
... And in typical government fashion, they overreached and created a draconian rulemaking body whose leader has no accountability and whose budget isn't even subject to Congessional oversight.
