Worst team UT has ever played?

Just wanted to point out that NAIA teams are not below Division III. It is simply a different affiliation. Carson-Newman won several National titles in the NAIA. They became a perrenial Top 25 team in Division II as soon as they joined the NCAA. There are a lot of NAIA teams better than Division III teams.

Division I-A:
(117 member institutions) - new membership requirements start 8/1/04
* Must sponsor 16 varsity sports for men and women.
* Must play at least five home games against other I-A opponents.
* Must average annually at least 15,000 in actual attendance for all home games

man, Vandy would have been pushing close to 15000 last night if you took out all of the Ole Miss fans. Sea of red!

Are Austin Peay the worst team we have ever played? Or have we played some division 3 team in the past?

Also, has a division 2 side ever beaten an FBS school?

When our Offense played against our defense last year in practice.
:)

You guys won't believe this... not sure I do... but I started an SEC pick em contest with some of my wife's family and my dad and 2 of them (Bama and Gator fan) are picking the Vols TO LOSE. Everyone texted me their picks (I'm keeping up with them) and I texted the Gator fan back asking if he was messing with me. He said no. Now, there's no money or anything involved so they could be messing with me... but I honestly don't believe they are! They were talking about how bad the Vols looked in the rerun of their spring game. I'm not gonna bring it up in case they weren't i'd get embarrassed!

I know you can't blame your wife for who she is related to, but ....she needs to pack her bags!

We should hang up at least 60 on peay, i'm just saying.......we will roll over them.

Rutgers in 1983 was pretty weak [think they lost to a couple 1AA teams] but as I recall Vols only beat them by a touchdown, on a cold day in the Jersey Meadow-Lands that I had the misfortune to attend.

How did Johnnie Jones rush for 230 yards in that game, yet we only had one touchdown?

If I remember correctly Vols beat the Citadel in the early 1980's - and Reggie White had 5 or 6 sacks.

GBO

I was at that game in Joisey too. We won 7-0! Fun trip! I think the worst team I've ever seen UT play was Pacific in 1990 or 91.

Good to know I only knew about the 1914 beat down because of the grey jersey stories.... there is an "American" college? not very original....

Without researching or knowing if it's the same one, American University is in Washington DC. I don't believe they play football anymore. Every few years you see them sneak into the NCAA basketball tourney though.

Would like to see us hang 100 on anyone right now.

My junior and senior years at UT, '93 and '94, the combined score of the Vandy and UK game each year was like 120-6. Those were the good ole days!

To be precise, the combined score was 127-14 (62-14 in '93 and 65-0 in '94). During those two years, we also beat Kentucky by the combined score of 100-0 (48-0 in '93 and 52-0 in '94). See Tennessee Historical Scores. Those were, indeed, good times to be a student and football fan at UT.

Then I'd say my memory is pretty damn good after 20 years. I didn't even look it up.

Beatings like that you never forget!!!!!!!!!!

I thought FCS and D2 was the same thing? My bad - I know literally nothing about any college sports under the top level, and to be honest why would I, I can't watch any of it?

It's not really you on this one. They've changed the divisional names enough to where it's gotten confusing.

Don't forget that Sewanee truly was a regional power at the turn of the twentieth century. Their 1899 team was 12-0, outscoring the opposition 322-10, including shutout victories over Georgia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, LSU and Texas.

"The 1899 Iron Men team's most notable accomplishment was a six-day period from November 9 to 14 which is arguably the greatest road trip in college football history. Manager Luke Lea put together an improbable schedule of playing five big name opponents in six days, outscoring them for a total of 91-0, including Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, and Ole Miss. Sewanee played and shut out them all while traveling by train for 2500 miles. This feat, barring fundamental changes in modern-day football, can never be equaled" (1899 Sewanee Tigers football team - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Boy, what the NCAA will do to get frigging games on tv...
