why is someone always talking about south carolina on these threads--a program that hasn't won anything, ever, in women's basketball. maybe let's stop the gamecock chatter?
South Carolina is the new Auburn (early 1990's), Vanderbilt (mid-1990's), Georgia (late 1990's), LSU (2000's), Kentucky (late 2000's/early 2010's). All have been the second place challenger to UT's dominance during a specific time period. Each had some success. Some won a conference regular season or tourney title during their time. LSU specifically was able to reach the Final Four multiple times. But in the end each failed to maintain momentum to push ahead of UT.
It is now South Carolina's turn on the merry go round. Interestingly if you look at that list of challengers over the years 2 of those schools lost a head coach after his shot at UT due to frustration (Jim Foster & Van Chancellor); Andy Landers and Joe Ciampi's consistent failure to break through has left each program mired in a current status of mediocrity. My sense is that with the graduation of the super senior class at UK, Mitchell's time has passed as well. The question is whether he sticks around and flouders like Andy or like the others has to step out of the Big Orange glow.
Will Dawn make a permanent push or did she just pull even in turn one only to lose momentum further down the track? A valid argument can be made that based on her past that Staley is different. If she fails she won't be the first though.
That will have a lot to do with South Carolina's fans as well. A big reason both LSU and Georgia fell off and Florida has never emerged as a contender is that even in their great seasons they struggled to put butts in seats. Nobody wants to play in front of a sparse home crowd. I don't have the numbers for SC's avg home attendance for 2014 but in 2013 it was less than 4K and that won't get it done. No success is sustainable without at least a little fan support.

Honestly, i think that is maybe one of the reason Diamond transferred, but she doesn't want to question our fan base and why we lost out on Mercedes, I do think we need to support our ladies more, i think i might plan a trip to Chapel Hill next Season if i can get off and watch both the men's and women, and maybe watch them when they come here. But we are all still pretty much in the dark why she left and she is not saying much , other than what we see what messages she writes on twitter, but if i were to speculate, attendance maybe or could be a reason.
We'll see. The product on the floor will determine that. Sure, USCe should be better in the coming years but then again, so should TENN. As for fan support, regardless of how good USCe possibly becomes, their fan support will never be that of what the Lady Vols have. Not trying to be harsh or offend just being real. On average, the Lady Vols bring in between 11,000-12,000 fans a game. On average. When it comes to fan support, you don't get better than TENN.
Fan support had nothing to do with why she decided to leave UNC. She wasn't happy there. Plain and simple. She didn't like it and wanted to go somewhere else. It happens to plenty of kids who go to college. They feel like one place is right for them, end up getting there and realizing it's not where they want to be. Homesickness also played a role.
I hate to disagree, but I disagree , I believe this goes way beyond happiness, everyone else has said she was unhappy but she has yet to say she was unhappy, or still give a concrete reason to why she left, people say this decision to transfer extended from the first time she arrived on campus or shortly after, homesick I could buy , happiness I don't buy. she was freshman player of the year , lead her team her and Allisha to an elite 8, from all I know was having a blast.
You can disagree all you want but as I already said, she wasn't happy there and that's really all there is to it. She knew deep down she wanted to be somewhere else and so she left. It wasn't a spur of the moment decision. From what I've heard, it was something that was a long time coming. Regardless of how well she was playing on the court or how much fun she was having off of it, at the end of the day she felt the best decision for her was to transfer.
Again we can speculate on what the reasoning were to her transfers only she knows but yet has come forth and really address to why she left, but again happiness in my opinion was the furthest to her leaving, I truly believe it was something else, people outside of her are using happiness as an escape goat.
Which is why she will not reach her potential at USC. Wilson has mediocre wing skills.
