Barring disaster, it will be hard to judge until 2015 or 2016. Yes, that's how base the cupboard was left.

Fact is Hunter was lost on the 1st series of the UF game and Bray was gone soon after. Prior to that the team looked pretty good including stomping a mud hole in Butch's UC team.

I didn't want him gone until the 2012 UF game but in hindsight the Kentucky game was when the wheels started coming off for Barbara's son.

I think if Butch doesn't make a bowl this year, his seat will be understandably warm. However, even if he does miss out this year, I believe he's a good enough coach to meet expectations in year 3 and avoid a Diiley scenario.


If he can't at least make a bowl game by year 3 then things will get ugly.

Getting to a bowl game is an absolute minimum. Butch is making big boy dinero and he left wins on the field last year. We can forgive (because look who coached them the year before) but there are six no-brainer wins on our schedule and this team is already more than half his.

With the talent he has brought in, an extra month of practice, and we should absolutely handle any low tier bowl opponent. A 6 - 7 year and i think the heat should be on (and rightly so).

I like butch, and i like almost everything he has done to date in orange. At the end of the day though, ws are the only coin of the realm. I think winning a bowl game is a successful year two. *

* (anything above 7-wins and the season is a big success as well, bowl game not included)

We have some grade A morons in our fan base. Perhaps an age limit should be enacted for starting threads instead of how often you post on the forum.

Even if nick satan had left alabummer to rebuild our footVol team it would take him 4 years of good recruiting to get us back to the top but you expect buTch to do wonders with his 1st recruiting class, LOL!

I'd suggest you actually learn something about college football, recruiting and what it really takes to rebuild a total program and spend less time on here making yourself look so dumb with posts already calling for more than any coach could do in such a sort timeframe.

I hope for 6 Wins this season but I won't be surprised if we get less than 6 with our brutal schedule.

It's sad how many here on VN are still so totally UNrealistic.

This. Everybody in VolNation needs to chill out. Even with the outstanding recruiting class CBJ has put together, you can't expect a bunch of freshman to play like seasoned veterans. It will take time for these young men to play to their full potential.

I don't think there's any pressure on CBJ from the UTAD to win this year. If the team is not bowl eligible in 2014 OR we don't get a top 10 class with some superstar (read 5* or high 4 at least) signees at positions of need like QB and tackle then I think the fans will be ready to make 2015 the judgment season whether Hart and Cheek like it or not. BTW I don't think Hart and Cheek wanted to fire Dooley when they did it but fan unrest forced their hands. UTAD has shown it's hand and there's no reason to think they won't follow the same script next time.

I have opined a thousand times it is about the Jimmy's and Joe's and Butch Jones has done a great job of recognizing this. I am not believing this OP after the recruiting season he just had. For the sake of sanity he has coached one season, why are we having this ***** discussion.

I've waited long enough, and it's time to call these posters out (and their ilk too numerous for multi-quotes).

I said the potential for this team is 6 wins + a bowl victory against a Fresno State, Northern Illinois, Rutgers, East Carolina type bowl opponent.

Are all of you seriously saying this is setting the bar too high? Are you seriously saying if we don't achieve this in Year Two there aren't serious questions / concerns?

Probably because most people assume we won't get to a bowl this season and it'll be hard to repeat the recruiting success with back to back losing seasons and no passel of in state and legacy prospects to draw down on.

I agree that recruiting is the #1 priority every year. Another recruiting class like the last one coupled with Butch's outstanding charisma may well warrant not being on the hot seat if we win 5-games next year.

However, we've got six no-brainer wins next year. It's Year Two. I expect big improvements everywhere and all the time. I don't expect us to win the East. I expect us to win the BBVA Compass Bowl.

Not necessarily, IMO. If he has a top 5 or top 10 recruiting class essentially locked up by season end, I'd give him a pass on missing a bowl. We're still pretty young.

But if we go 5-7 and it looks like our recruiting class will land outside the top 10, then I'm concerned.

from the standpoint of those that make the decisions their doubts will service if we lose to Vanderbilt or Kentucky this year. 5-7 record will not be an issue unless one of the losses is to the previous mentioned teams.

Our admin and the boosters involved in those decision understand how inexperienced this roster is and understand nothing is a sure thing when a roster is like that.

Now we fans may have much different expectations and desires for this team. We don't make the decisions or determine the coaches future though.
