Zaay Green

CJ, ever heard of Nick Fabiani's Mat Time? Carmen Basilio, Argentina Rocca, and later Ted DeBiase.

You mean Ted "the million dollar man" DeBiase (he was around when Harley Race was around)
Ric Flair soon showed up in more feathers than a peacock
the rest, no, but early on wrestling was more localized

Like I remember "the fabulous Interns" who wore white suits,,,,it was blinding on B&W tv
and the first women's wrestler I ever saw, The Fabulous Moula

In the very beginning, Ted DeBiase was a "good guy" who always was a clean wrestler. Always the clean breaks. Ivy League haircut, no facial hair. Mat Time may have originated out of the Phila.

Actually in the case of Zaay looks to me totally probable that she wasn't being allowed to come back. I think the breaking of team rules is why she is leaving. Massengill you could come up with any theory why she decided to leave. There is also the possibility that she could come back.

Regardless, she may very well wind up at a much better program after not being allowed to come back, which is what happened with Te'a Cooper.

Well, I do know that the athletic department barely broke even recently. I don’t know exactly how they did this past year but I will look it up. I haven’t heard of any big boosters forking over money for Butch. Have you? Until you have a name all you have is a theory.

This is how buyouts work and it's common knowledge. It's not a 'theory'. Sorry that you aren't familiar with this, but that's not really my issue. You can use your arrogance as a defense mechanism all you want, but this is how buyouts work.

I have read numerous stories in local newspapers bemoaning the athletic departments finances.

That has nothing to do with paying coaches or AD people buyouts.

I’ll get back with you since I am so ignorant of finances. Did I mention I am a CPA? Hold my beer.

I said UT's finances, not finances in general. Quit gaslighting.

Also, nobody cares what you do for a living. That's only a thing in your apparently ego-driven world where you think people think you're important. I'm not surprised that someone who is a CPA would think people are impressed at them being a CPA, though.

It's been stated ad nauseam but this program held on to Warlick for too long. We have seen this happen before to programs.

I think she was bringing a lot of players that just wasn't right for the program or wasn't brought along correctly in order to help the program be successful. The attitude of many of the players we've seen over the last 10 years about the program just seem different.

Clearly they slept through how bad we were this past season.

UT might have the most willfully ignorant fanbase in the country.
No idea what you are trying to say. Who clearly slept through how bad we were this past season? Yes, we have lost Zaay and I believe she would have been a big help but the fact is we played without her last year so the team isn't going to be much different than it was. Jazz leaving may set things back a bit as she was playing much better than the year before. These two leaving most likely will leave us a weaker team unless the remaining players make a lot of progress in the off season and with this off season being what it is, that is doubtful. It will be interesting to see how the season plays out. One more thing, congratulations on being smarter than the ignorant fanbase.

Even with the years of mediocrity under Holly, with the fan support and tradition, there's only a handful of coaches who wouldn't have come here if UT had been willing to actually pay for a coach that could get us back on top.

The bottom line is the UTAD doesn't really care if the women's basketball program is elite ever again. When you go after a coach with a marginal amount of money in your pocket, you'll get a marginal coach and you'll get marginal results.

Good lord, CRUSHING this thread with truth bombs. Take it easy volman128, they have families...

Oh look, another “Let’s book mark this post,” post. I swear, you people get more pleasure out of the few times this happens than you do the success of the program. I hope UT succeeds. If it’s Kellie that does it, great. Do I believe it? No. I certainly don’t think the brainwaves from my skepticism have any affect on her success or failure.
Do I believe you’re a pathetic schmuck? ......
Kellie is welcome to prove her resume wrong. Go for it!

Sounds like a lot of going in circles to try to cover your butt no matter what happens. I speak straight out, and I have been around for the full run of Lady Vol Basketball. It is easy for some like you to play your games and sit back and second guess, but when things go opposite from what you spew out, you then jump on the bandwagon and try to act as if you had been there the whole time. I believe in Kellie.

Really? You think I’m gonna put this on my resume or something?
Play games? It’s a damn discussion forum. I don’t have a great feeling about KHJ? You do? Great! Feel free to disagree, but when you go into this “playing games” BS it says more about you than me.

If Kellie succeeds you know what that will mean? I was wrong! Oh, the humanity. If you’re right then all the better. Get a friggin life.

Good lord man, do you always get this emotional when someone says they disagree with you?
First, my pointing out that I am a CPA has nothing to do with thinking I am important or that people should be impressed. I was responding to you calling me ignorant about UT’s finances. I was attempting to point out that I did have a pretty good grasp of finance and would be back shortly with some numbers and so here I am. As an aside, does that chip on your shoulder get heavy? Jeez!
Background information:
UT like most educational institutions and other non-profits has fiscal years that run 7-1-xx to 6-30-xx.
Holly was fired March 2019, Kelly hired April 2019. Both FY 2019
Butch Jones fired Nov 2017. Fulmer takes over as AD Dec 2017. Both FY 2018.
Historically UT’s athletic department has done pretty well. Usually break even or a little surplus. It looks like the athletic department has used surpluses to pay for capital improvements, build up a reserve fund and sometimes even send a little money to academics.
Financial Results:
FY 2018 deficit of 6.5m
FY 2019 surplus .79m
2018 was particularly bad because the university had to book 13.8m in buyouts. Currie 2.2m and the rest for Butch and assistants. It is important to realize, however, that the Butch buyout although booked in total in FY 18 will be paid out yearly through 2021. So not all of that deficit was cash out in FY 2018 but it is about a 3m a year cash bogey Phil has got to cover.
I could not find a balance sheet so I’m not sure what cash was looking like but I do know that in FY 2018 the athletic reserve fund went from 17.1m to 9.5m. Dropping by almost half. Phil was obviously funding something from past surpluses, probably capital improvements and buy outs. Regardless if I am the AD finance person this makes me uneasy.
Additionally from FY 2018 to FY 2019:
Ticket sales revenue flat
Contributions down 2.8m (doesn’t look like big booster stepped up to cover buyouts)
Media rev up 1.4m
Conf share rev up .7m
Royalties rev down .6 mil
Bowl rev unchanged at 0 (ouch)
Salaries expense up 3.4m Pruitt and staff?
So all of these changes net to a 4.8m negative p&l change for 2019. And, Phil knows he’s still got to cover Butch et. al. for approx 3 million and he/Currie drained 8 million out of the athletic reserve fund last year and he still has a lot of improvements scheduled for Neyland. You will recall, however Phil put a pause on those plans until further review.

So yes, I think the numbers speak to Phil maybe not feeling like putting out a huge salary for the new Women’s basketball coach (Holly also had a buyout around 1m) even though he is a big LV supporter.

No idea what you are trying to say.

It should be pretty clear. I'm not one to beat around the bush. But I digress.

This is precisely my point. It's like you have zero interest in the improving or you don't understand how bad this year's team was. Either way, shrugging off her departure makes no sense, unless you're ok with being irrelevant, which is seemingly becoming more and more of an acceptable option within our fanbase.

One more thing, congratulations on being smarter than the ignorant fanbase.

Thanks!

You are so offbase it's not even funny. It's actually sad you couldn't comprehend what I was saying. I wasn't shrugging off Zaay's departure, just pointing out we survived without her last year so we can survive this next year without her. Would we have been better last year with her? Absolutely. Would we have been better off with her next year? Absolutely, but she is not going to be here so the team and coaches will have to deal with that fact. Losing her doesn't make us worse since we didn't have her last year, it just doesn't make us better. We will have to rely on others to make us better if we are better. Oh, I take back the congratulations since you have clearly shown you're not.

Coach, when I saw the movie Roustabout, at the theater, the people laughed when Elvis was first seen riding his Honda 305 Superhawk....The bike did not fit the image of a rough Roustabout type of guy...But he was still the King.....

Also, a person that works for a carnival is called a Carny, not a Roustabout...Roustabouts work on oil rigs and such....Carny just did not fit Elvis....

AT this point I have seen no verification of this rumor
My question is why are we spending so much time discussing if Zay is here to stay, or on her way out of town? Yes we will lose a good player if we lose Zay, however right now it is just a rumor. We need to deal with reality. The nature of the beast in women’s basketball is every year several players will be entering the portal. The reasons will vary from the desire to win championships, not fitting into the program, or disliking fellow players or the coaching staff.
