The other argument I have seen made is that he may be a solid position coach but that he is a horrible recruiter. Again, time will tell. That conclusion may prove to be correct. The logic however that he must be a horrible recruiter because he's moved around a lot and the Rivals site didn't show him as having 5* offer lists, is in my opinion flawed.
I addressed the nomadic nature of the business in my previous post. Just part of the business. Happens for a lot of reasons. Unless a coach has been repeatedly fired, has not shown any success with the units he's coached, or has too much baggage, I don't think you hold it against them. None of those have been the case with Azzanni.
Anecdotal evidence suggests he is a decent recruiter and has in fact recruited the south, at least periodically, throughout his career. Anecdotal evidence for those who are wondering are the different articles and interviews that state "he is a tireless recruiter", etc. While not "proof" of his success, it is evidence to suggest he may have some success.
As to the Rivals evidence, or lack thereof...I don't put a whole lot of faith in that either. The Rivals records are far from complete and are very inconsistent. Some schools don't seem to list a lead recruiter. Some years even recruiting coordinators don't show any named recruits. Not sure how exactly they get their info just know it's not consistent enough for me to rely on exclusively.
I've looked at a lot of the other names mentioned in this thread as better choices. At least three, according to Rivals, have never, ever recruited any player, of any star rating, at any college, ever. So how, following the poster's own logic, can he dismiss Azzanni as a horrible recruiter yet prefer these coaches who have apparently never recruited??? Best I can tell, some of these guys are preferred due to past ties to UT as a player, intern, or coach with no regard to coaching resume or demonstrated recruiting prowess.
My long winded point is this. There just aren't many homerun hires, particularly for position coaches. All of the candidates have something to be critical of.
Tee Martin? Favorite son, seems to be a good recruiter, very limited resume as either a coach or recruiter. Popular hire, yes but not flawless.
Latrell Scott? UT history, check. Some success with prior units. Seems to be on a downward spiral. Lots of moving around ala Azzanni. Has baggage, fired from Richmond after having 2 DUI's. Spent 2011 out of football and is currently TE coach at JamesMadison.
Hinshaw? Solid resume, UT history, solid recruiter (per Rivals). Downside? All the reports of disorganization and poor connection to TN high school programs under his watch as recruiting coordinator. I personally don't think he did a great job with our receivers (personal observation). Great talents but did not see things I identify with good coaching....solid downfield blocking, great route running, good at hot reading defense, few dropped balls that should have been caught, etc.
Bottom line, give the guy Azzanni a chance folks. He appears to be a solid hire and only time will tell whether it is a homerun, a solid double, or a strikeout.
