‘18 QB Grad Transfer Keller Chryst (UT commit 3/1/18)

He'd likely be the best QB at UT the day he stepped on campus. We could do a lot worse if we're taking a transfer QB for a season.

Meh. He's an okay game manager as far as turnovers and would add depth. This guy would make matt simms look like an explosive playmaker though.

Yeah I don’t think so. He’s better than that.

I’m not saying he’s John Elway but who do we have that’s proven anything at QB? Or better yet proven to be better than this grown man? At least this guy is big, seasoned and won some games. JG looks 190lbs and McBride might be 6ft tall.

Can’t believe some of you are opposed to bringing in a transfer QB for the fall. Clearly none of us know the numbers for a fact so the “he’ll take a spot from a guy next year” argument is assuming too much.

And even if JG does well this spring and fall and wins the job, you don’t think it would be smart to have a proven backup? It seems the coaching staff sure does they way they’re going after QB transfers.

Personally, I’d rather they sign TWO transfer QB’s than none at all!

He played last year less than half a yr removed from torn ACL so that doesn't help athleticism. No harm in taking him imo

I just don't think he's good. He has similar stats to Florida and Arkansas qbs last year. And that's after 4 years of developing in a good program. As a Passer he's a less efficient jalen hurts without the wheels and doesn't seem like he can throw down field at all. I said he would be good depth. I was disagreeing with yer statement that he'd immediately be the best QB on the roster. I get that our qbs sucked last year and we probably need depth, but I think we've seen what chryst has to offer after a few years of developing in a good program. I don't think we've seen the best of JG until he gets some coaching. Jmo

That's the whole argument for JG though

My argument for JG is he was a decent game manager even without any coaching. And showed toward the end of the season some potential that he could be good if developed.

Am i missing something because all I saw was every quarterback that went out on the field had to run like a chicken with its head cut off as soon as the ball was hiked. I think you will see JG as a completely different qb for Tennessee going forward.

Yep. I hope they bring in a transfer and JG takes the job.
That means he earned it and not because the other guy sucked or was injured. JG has a talented arm and it would be nice if he could be the man for a couple of years.

Not usually down for a grad transfer.... especially QB, but we are very thin, and this guy has had some success.

No one on campus has shown anything that convinced me they can take this job and win. I’m down

Chances are, he is better than any QB we have, and Pruitt wants to contend now rather than 2 years. We have the roster to at least compete and maybe pull some upsets.

I just don't get this thinking on chryst. In 4 years of playing for a better coach he still was not as good as JG last year in his first year with no coaching. They threw almost the same amount of passes. JG had a better competition percentage 62% to 54% and yards per attempt 7.2 to 6.7 and the same td to int ratio. The only game he threw for more than 181 yards was 253 against rice. JG threw for 242 against KY and 239 against lsu. And JG seemed to improve as the season went on but chryst got worse throughout his career. He got replaced by another redshirt freshman already last season who outplayed him in the tougher part of their schedule. And he wasn't gonna win the job back even though Costello is hurt and can't play in the spring. Kevin hogan was the qb in that same system as him when he got there. I would consider Kevin hogan a game manager in college. Chryst makes hogan look like case Keenum out there. Haha. But sure, depth and what not. Stanford seems okay letting him go and they have less qbs on their roster than us. Basically just Costello who's out for spring and an incoming freshman.

I feel like Chryst could be our Jake Coker. Doesn't have to be a world beater, but just a solid QB who manages the game well.

First year this is probably the best we can ask for. If he comes in and wins the job that'll put a fire underneath the other QBs and that could get one of them to push for the starting job. Which in the end competition breeds success

We need depth and competition at QB. It might also allow us to redshirt Shrout and keep him in the program another year. I still think JG will ultimately be our best QB, but with our line, we need a capable backup. I don't think that McBride is a good fit for our current offense, though I do like his toughness and gamesmanship. If Chryst beats out JG, then we will really need depth because I think that JG would transfer at that point.

Wouldn't be surprised if this guy ended up starting here next year. I think it's clear this staff prefers true pocket passers in this offense.
