‘18 QB Grad Transfer Keller Chryst (UT commit 3/1/18)

Have a feeling a lot of those who think he'll start haven't.

He is better at the moment than any QB we put on field last yr. JG has the higher ceiling and would be my preference. If he can't win job with all spring as a head start then he isn't the guy we hoped he would be.

That’s an OPINION! Facts yet to be determined.

Yes, I have. He’s not Manning but he’s pretty solid for the collegiate level. Probably not a future NFL, but would be good for us if he progresses some

So we need him to progress or our own young QB to progress? He had decent coaching at Stanford so what are we waiting on actually?

What i will say is, the qb position is wide open. Walk-ons included. Whoever wins the job will get his opportunity but i dont think Pruitt will sit by the wayside like butch did and not give anyone else the opportunity to start, if the starter is holding us back. I believe the qb situation will be, (in order) JG, KC, WM, JTS.

Some thoughts on Chryst from Rule of Tree, SBNation’s Stanford site, writer Jack Blanchat.

“I’d say Keller’s strengths are that he’s got a really powerful arm and defenders bounce off him.” Blanchat said. “He’s a strong dude and he plays like it. However, his weakness is that he’s sometimes really slow to process from the pocket. He can stare down receivers and get flat footed back there, which can bog down an offense while he’s looking, trying to make those big plays that can snap an offense out of neutral.”

So what happened at Stanford? Chryst was never able to consistently put it all together, according to Blanchat.

“He never seemed to make that next jump at Stanford,” Blanchat said. “He was seen as the heavy favorite to win the starting job two years ago, but was beaten out by Ryan Burns. This year, Keller just never seemed to have any consistency, and he was frequently slow to make decisions and was taking a lot of sacks. Maybe that has because he was recovering from an ACL tear, but he was definitely outplayed by K.J. Costello as well, who brought some more energy to the Stanford offense.”

In 13 career starts, Chryst eclipsed the 200 passing yards mark just twice. He’s a guy that’s struggled with efficiency, completing just 55 percent of his passes.

Read ALL THIS junk after Dobbs freshman season! “Why can’t we recruit a ‘SEC quality’ QB”? :cray: I myself was a Riley Ferguson believer, thus a short bout of self-indulgent mourning before I waited for reality. Sure enough, another bad call from some of our finest ANALysts. Now Dobbs is this long gone standard and we’ll never find another in our lifetime...until we do. I come here for the laughs.

and please enlighten us as to what in chryst stats shows you that he is clearly better than jg. Because to most eyes his stats are worse and that was with a better supporting cast in a weaker conference.

bvs

IMO...Chryst is Dormadys replacement...that’s all there is to it...he’ll provide depth and a somewhat capable option should Guarantano go down...McBride will transfer, Shrout will redshirt and in 19 we’ll have Guarantano, Shrout and Howell...

When I think of it in terms of him simply being Dormadys replacement I feel good about the pickup

Good post. And the fact is we're going to need more than 1 or 2 QB's this fall. Might need all 4 to play. So adding a veteran like Chryst was a must, IMO.

And maybe Chryst wins the job over JG in fall camp. Maybe he doesn't. Personally, I don't care who wins the job. I just hope at least one of them does better than expected in the new system.
