‘18 QB Grad Transfer Keller Chryst (UT commit 3/1/18)

Good post. And the fact is we're going to need more than 1 or 2 QB's this fall. Might need all 4 to play. So adding a veteran like Chryst was a must, IMO.

And maybe Chryst wins the job over JG in fall camp. Maybe he doesn't. Personally, I don't care who wins the job. I just hope at least one of them does better than expected in the new system.

Honestly...when comparing him to Dormady I think we may have upgraded slightly...normally I would give the edge to Dormady because of system experience but everybody’s starting over in that regards...I think the arms are the same and Chryst might have a slight in advantage in mobility....I don’t think it’s any worse than a wash between he and Dormady

Nailed it.

So you think he peaked?

I don’t think he that great of a QB. You all must think he’s like Baker Mayfield or a transfer like Russell Wilson. He’s inconsistent and I don’t care what Shaw says. If he was too good to ride the bench there then he would’ve kept the starting job.

A second string QB at Stanford is better than anything we got. I’ll take it

You’re putting words in my mouth. I do NOT think he’ll get a chance in the NFL, but that doesn’t mean he can’t do well for us.

IMO...Chryst is Dormadys replacement...that’s all there is to it...he’ll provide depth and a somewhat capable option should Guarantano go down...McBride will transfer, Shrout will redshirt and in 19 we’ll have Guarantano, Shrout and Howell...

When I think of it in terms of him simply being Dormadys replacement I feel good about the pickup

Didn’t Dormady win the job last year? JG hasn’t shown much and kinda acted like a jerk while doing so

Stanford apparently has just as much or more of a quandry at QB than we do.

Stanford Redshirt Freshman Quarterback KJ Costello will be "held out of full drills" during spring practice due to a hip injury, per a Tweet from Si.com's Bruce Feldman. Costello hurt his thumb in Stanford's loss to USC in the Pac-12 Championship game but played in the Valero Alamo Bowl loss to TCU. With Costello out, Stanford will have no scholarship quarterbacks fully available to participate for spring practice, as Davis Mills will miss the entirety of the dual two-week sessions after suffering what Head Coach David Shaw termed "a setback" during Stanford's prep week ahead of the season finale against Notre Dame.

Fifth-year Senior-to-be Keller Chryst has announced his intention to transfer, so come the spring sessions the Cardinal has literally no quarterbacks on the roster beside Sophomore Jack Richardson, who walked onto the Cardinal out of Salinas (CA) Palma High School in 2017 along with fellow Palma Grad and current Cardinal Center Drew Dalman. Coach Shaw expects Mills to be back and available for training camp, when '18 signee Jack West would ostensibly be available at quarterback as well.

The way I'm looking at this is I think this could possibly help us. In his first real playing time he started and won their last 6 games of 2016 including their bowl win over UNC, the game in which he tore his ACL and the same game his star all-everything, Christian McCaffrey, chose to sit out so as not to damage his draft prospects.

I don't know how it will play out but the guy was very very :))) highly rated coming out of high school, and did pretty fair on his first shot in 2016 (imo). Obviously, he probably thinks for whatever reason he's got a better shot at coming in here and taking over than he does working his way back to the top at the Cardinal. (While the grass is not always greener I think in recent years we've all witnessed a number of disasters around the country in regards to QB politics).

I hope he's over his ACL jitters and takes that next step he was expected to take in 2017. It could be of significant benefit to us in 2018. JG would still have 2019 or he could go grad transfer himself if he graduates early and can find what he believes to be a more attractive opportunity.

By the way, I read somwhere that Bama was still looking for a Grad Transfer QB for their roster after Mike Leach stole their first commitment. Which brings up the question, is Chryst signed or just committed?

Assuming Chryst will be here, as an early graduate from Stanford, I would expect him to have done a lot of studying in the new playbook before his arrival on campus. His majors at Stanford were listed as Science, Tech and Society. I'm not sure how that background will mesh with our whacko fanbase but we did pull it off with an aerospace kid so it might work again.

He has shown he is tough as nails. His slate is clean imo. Coaches job to put every player in a position to succeed .
Larry Scott and Butch did not do that on the offensive side of the ball.

Some thoughts on Chryst from Rule of Tree, SBNation’s Stanford site, writer Jack Blanchat.

“I’d say Keller’s strengths are that he’s got a really powerful arm and defenders bounce off him.” Blanchat said. “He’s a strong dude and he plays like it. However, his weakness is that he’s sometimes really slow to process from the pocket. He can stare down receivers and get flat footed back there, which can bog down an offense while he’s looking, trying to make those big plays that can snap an offense out of neutral.”

So what happened at Stanford? Chryst was never able to consistently put it all together, according to Blanchat.

“He never seemed to make that next jump at Stanford,” Blanchat said. “He was seen as the heavy favorite to win the starting job two years ago, but was beaten out by Ryan Burns. This year, Keller just never seemed to have any consistency, and he was frequently slow to make decisions and was taking a lot of sacks. Maybe that has because he was recovering from an ACL tear, but he was definitely outplayed by K.J. Costello as well, who brought some more energy to the Stanford offense.”

In 13 career starts, Chryst eclipsed the 200 passing yards mark just twice. He’s a guy that’s struggled with efficiency, completing just 55 percent of his passes.

Sounds like an older, slower, and more brokedown version of JG...without the apparent upside in potential..

Earlier this month the national sports writer for the Orlando Sentinel ranked the QB situations for all SEC teams heading into 2018 spring practice. He has Tennessee as 5th best.

1. Alabama
2. Georgia
3. Auburn
4. Florida
5. TENNESSEE

Buzz: The Volunteers received good news earlier this month when former Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst announced he was transferring to Tennessee. Chryst, who was 11-2 as a starter in two seasons with the Cardinal, will graduate this summer and be immediately available to play in the fall. That will make things interesting in a quarterback competition that also features redshirt sophomore Jarrett Guarantano and sophomore Will McBride. Guarantano has the physical tools to succeed but remains rough around the edges while McBride was forced into action a year too soon and could stand more development.

Ranking the QB position in the SEC heading into spring - Orlando Sentinel

6. Texas A&M
7. South Carolina
8. Missouri
9. LSU
10. Mississippi State
11. Ole Miss
12. Vanderbilt
13. Arkansas
14. Kentucky

Missouri at 8? Lol

Sounds like Matt Simms

Chryst is a much bigger dude, though. He’s built to be able to take some hits.

IMO that’s one reason the staff wanted him so much. I think they’re pretty sure our OL won’t be able to keep one QB healthy all year and don’t want to be stuck throwing McBride or Shrout to the wolves. So they wanted to add a guy with some experience in a somewhat similar system who’s built to take some abuse.

UT and UF above South Carolina and Missouri makes no sense to me.

I don't think UT is in a great spot but who do SC and Mizzou have behind Bently and Locke. I think that may be why they are so low.

It still doesn't explain why we are so high though. I had the confused there.

It's an Orlando Sentinel article. They are not exactly known for expert knowledge of SEC football. Mostly just Gator fluff.

Well that makes sense. Why is this crap allowed to be called news or journalism? When the average Joe or Jane can call bs after a cursory glance there is no way it was properly researched.
