‘18 QB Grad Transfer Keller Chryst (UT commit 3/1/18)

McBride and Shrout are sufficient IMO

Why would you want either of these guys as backup over a senior who has started games in a P5 conference? With our Oline, I am pretty sure that the backup will get meaningful snaps this year.

Someone will correct me if I'm totally wrong, but not sure Grad transfer counts against 25 limit.

It has been discussed. I don't think they do because of the initial counter definition. I believe they only count against the 85 cap. Others disagree I think.

it does, but you can blue shirt, and he'd take a spot in the 2019 class, leaving us with 24 to sign next cycle.

Thomson is a pro-style quarterback with an arm that Simms calls “powerful.” He broke out in 2016 with 16 touchdowns, 2,436 yards and just five interceptions. He only played in the first two games of this season because of a shoulder injury. His former offensive coordinator at Wagner, Rich Scangarello, is the current quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He’s just as resolute in his view of Thomson’s talent and future.

“I think he’s an NFL quarterback,” Scangarello said. “I have no doubt about it. He’s athletic, smart and tough, and he’s just scratching the surface as a player. He’s as good as the back-up quarterbacks in the NFL right now. I really believe that. He’s legit.”

Word has begun to trickle through college circles about Thomson’s potential. He said that he’s spoken to Tennessee offensive coordinator Tyson Helton and the Vols have offered a blueshirt. (Essentially, that means he can’t go on paid official visits and is awarded a scholarship on the first day of camp, which counts toward the following year’s recruiting class.)
Blue shirt offer is interesting

For some reason I was thinking he doesn’t count towards the 25, only the 85?

Like you all said, who knows though.

His recent twitter follows include TN Football, Trey Smith, Daniel Bituli, Tyson Helton, and Brandon Doughty (played QB for Helton at WKU).

Good sign this might be our grad transfer QB. Cannons ready.

Or they know we need depth which we do

Yes, the team needs depth. But look at it from the player's perspective.

Why would a GT quarterback even consider a program unless he was convinced that he had a very legitimate chance of competing for and winning the starting job? He's one and done no matter what. He wants to transfer so he can play!

I agree with the other posters that the incoming staff doesn't see a lot of potential in the QBs they are inheriting. Looks like their plan is to find a GT to get through 2018, hoping J.T. Shrout develops and starts in 2019 as a RS Frosh.

nothing wrong with adding more competition. especially at this position. and depth is a concern.

From another perspective, no matter who is here for the QB competition all of them just need to suck it up and go out and perform. Our backups have to take the team approach if they aren't playing. Some of that I am sure was to coaching, Saban obviously is a straight shooter with them, while you can't blame Hurts for transferring now that he is older who knows he may not. Either way he handled the moment with class and in the character of a true teammate. This is the type of thing our team need to get back too. I think Pruitt will be up close truthful with his players, they will know how it is going to be whether they like it or not. I think he will let them all know it's based on performance and who we think can win the game for us. Players deserve the truth, at the same time players have to realize they have to earn their position. I remember the days of Manning-Helton, this was a unique situation I just like quoting the old article. Helton came in and played well, but Helton new Manning was about too take over. Helton knew it was only a matter of time and was actually relieved when he handed it over to Manning. He smiled at Fulmer and said it's time for Peyton coach. He was a great baseball player with a great future. But Helton came in and played like a Wildman, he was actually very effective. Our QB situations with the previous 2 staffs were not managed correctly and the QB position is the one place you have to have stability. Eason may transfer from UGA but he at least stuck it out without crying this year. And just think back to just this summer and radio and media talking like it was a slam dunk he was the next best thing and then wham here comes Frohm. In closing, what I am saying is if coaches play it straight with their QB's and develop that trust in recruiting they will usually be the coaches that end up with quality QB's on their roster. A QB has to have leadership skills and be able to handle adversity, if they can or can't handle it off the field it is usually is a great indicator if they will handle it on it. GBO!

2017 stats

JG- 7 games 86 cmp, 139 att, 61.9%, 997 yds, 7.2 y/a, 7.1/ 4 td's, 2 int, 128.7 rating

Chryst- 9 games 77 cmp, 143 att, 53.8 pct, 937 yds, 6.6 y/a, 6.4 ay/a, 8 td, 4 in, 121.8.

Add in that Chryst is two years older and had a much better oline. If i'm missing something, somebody please fill me in

Chryst also had a MASSIVE advantage in having heisman contender Bryce Love in the backfield and a great offensive line. Bryce Love rushed for more yards than (Kelly and Chandler combined x 2)! Think about what options would have been open to our QB's if we had a run game like that. Anyone you put in there with that O-Line and run game should have a 60%+ completion percentage. Imagine the options off of play action with faking a hand off to Bryce Love.

This is where taking a Grad transfer would get hairy. Chryst more than likely is transferring because he wants to play but if he stays as marginal as he has been he won't get that at UT.

I think the fact that all these grad transfers are being talked about as blue shirts shows where they are on the staffs priorities. It seems like they would like another experienced qb to come in and compete with JG but they would be okay if they didn't get one. Otherwise they would be trying harder to recruit them IMO.

Sign him up
He starts from day 1

Get his footwork together and watch him work

He can do it but it's no lock just like Wiggins wasn't a lock. Both are/were depth plays with potential to start. Guarantano is more talented upside but Chryst will be more cerebral. It's simple for me. You can't trust a kid that hasn't been healthy any season he has played the past 3 years of action. You have to get someone else in with experience

I wonder how much he was effected by the ACL injury he suffered in bowl game his RS soph season. He didn't participate in spring or early camp but still won starting job. He was playing very early off an ACL. In his Rice highlights which I think was game 1 he appears to favor that front leg unlike his previous yr highlights.

The Chryst we potentially get may be much different than the one people saw last year that was less than a year removed from ACL.
