‘21 GA PF Jabari Smith (Auburn commit)

I would take Barnes 24/7,365, any day of the week. But some just have a weird hatred for Pearl that I think comes from missing the glory days we had under him. Once we make an elite eight, final four, or win a championship I’m willing to bet those opinions change.
Weird hatred for Pearl? Those who don't like him have plenty of reason. You act as if they are manufactured reasons.

Opinions change? Every person with a brain knows Pearl is a self centered prick who’d do anything to save himself from his own crooked actions.

Yeah, what's not to hate when a guy totally screws your program by committing a major NCAA violation trying to cover for a secondary violation? Pearl brought the haters on himself. We had a good thing going. He had the program rockin' and headed in the right direction. Then, inexplicably, he felt the need to lie to the NCAA over a secondary violation that might have got us a slap on the wrist. And that's when things got blown all to hell.

I don't hate the guy, but you're damn right I have a lot of resentment for him. Sure, he screwed himself, but he also screwed us. Think of the crap we had to go through until we lucked out with Barnes, and all of it could have been avoided had Pearl simply told the truth. I can't even see him without my first thought being..

I just don’t think the bbq was embarrassing, or Pearl running damage control for the sabatoge job orchestrated by Matta. Karma is a bitch. Why would you expect a committed recruit’s dad to turn over a photo like that? I’d say he was shocked. The Craft family are humongous pieces of ****. Again, if UTs AD had a lick of sense and any stones, it never would have happened. Will Wade, Coach K, Sean Miller, Self, Roy Williams are running around cheating in a way that would make Pearl blush and y’all are still going on about NOTHING. Bumps and barbecues. Last I checked all those coaches are still coaching at the same schools.

Our AD ****ing ruined UT football with mass incompetence. They rolled over like a cheap whore when the Pearl thing happened. Barnes’s ethics (which I like) doesn’t change that.
Your take is almost is almost as dumb Pearl's actions were. WTF cover up a secondary violation by committing a major one??! If he had simply told the truth, things could have been so much different.

And it pisses me off when people start whining "it was just a bbq". First of all, it was a cookout, not a bbq. Two totally different things. Secondly, IT WASN"T ABOUT THE DAMN COOKOUT! If that were the only thing, then there's a good chance he's still coaching at UT. It was always about the LYING. He lied to the NCAA trying to cover up a minor violation. Hell, he deserved to be punished for stupidity alone. Just admit the secondary violation and take your lumps. Don't effing lie about it and make it bigger than it ever should have been.

Sorry for the rant, but the stupidity of Pearl's actions really make me wish I could have nut-punched the bastard, because basically, that's what I feel like he did to us. People want to blame the university, or the NCAA, or bitch about "others get away with it".... Pearl did it to himself. No one to blame but himself. It's called taking responsibility for one's actions. I know it's a foreign concept in today's world, but it still rings true.

your selective moral outrage is noted.

Pearl is great at what he does and is a "success" by many standards. Unfortunately, this thread reminds us all precisely why the word "fan" (i.e., one who exhibits excessive enthusiasm & intense, uncritical devotion) is used in sports as too many posters are in here doing Olympic level mental gymnastics to ignore Bruce's unehtical and self-centered actions which screwed over REAL PEOPLE personally, professionally, and financially. But, I guess parts of our fanbase believe those Vol assistants and their families don't deserve empathy let alone our indignation at Bruce.

Very well stated.

You must not know how the NCAA operates. Craft had switched his commitment to OSU. The NCAA caught wind of Pearl and started to investigate. The only way they can get this information is by interviewing current student athletes at other institutions. Guys who have graduated don’t have to talk, and kids at Tennessee aren’t going to turn their coach in.

So, they tell Craft that his eligibility is not in jeopardy as long as he tells the truth about Pearl. If he lies, then his eligibility is in jeopardy. It’s how they got Leo Lewis at MSU to talk about Hugh Freeze. So, Craft turns over the picture.

Gary Parrish believes they are in the process of doing this to Will Wade and eventually maybe Memphis.

His account of the timeline of events certainly suggests some ignorance on the subject, or at best, significant memory loss.

What’s most disappointing to me was all the talk of top guys who wanted to play with Chandler but we keep missing (if the barn rumors are true). Hard not to believe there’s other things influencing their decisions besides just basketball.

It's hard to understand why we are struggling with front court players when we are guaranteed of having such a good backcourt. We have everything to sell. I don't get it.
Not to mention, Barnes is known for being a good developer of bigs, while Pearl was always lacking in that area.

Not sure I agree with your CBP statement. If you’re a stretch 4 who wants to be more of a 3 type player, then CBP’s system would be appealing the way they spread the floor and give most everyone the green light to shoot. He’s also known to like the point forward type guys and just put a one and done guy in the draft. Now if you’re a back to the basket power player then I agree.

Why did Bruce lie about his hot dog party? Because it was in his contract that an NCAA violation was grounds for dismissal.

I'm sure there are a number of different factors that go into these kid's decision, so it's not entirely surprising things have gone a different direction with many of our targets. It's still a wonderful class thus far, but I will agree that I have found it somewhat surprising Barnes hasn't been able to secure a commitment from an elite big. This 2021 class has started off as good as almost any in the country and Chandler has connections with a number of elite players, so it's weird that we haven't had a win in that column yet.

It really is the perfect situation for one of them to succeed here----elite perimeter play, guard depth, defensive-minded approach, talented roster from top to bottom, coaching, etc. I think eventually Barnes will secure a Top 10 big man while coaching here. Unsure when that will be though.

I could be wrong but but Pearl doesn’t have a great track record of putting players in position to make them better and improve their draft stock. He’s got a great reputation of putting underrated players in position to succeed.
His system is pressure and foul the other team and to have the guards bail him out by hitting terrible and highly contested 3-point shots. If he doesn’t have a shooter his system is
doomed. Pearl’s teams lack discipline on and off the court.
It’s hard to imagine a prospect would want to go to Auburn to get better and prepare for the NBA.

Rob Lewis on VQ podcast said if we miss on Smith he expects us to go the grad transfer route and sign 1-2 guys.

The grad transfer market has been growing exponentially the past few years, and I can only imagine that this post-COVID grad transfer market with the altered eligibility rules will be quite large. The silver lining with missing on Smith is that I imagine a lot of teams will be making tough decisions this year, and players as well, which will lead to a lot of talent on the open market.
