‘23 NC SG Freddie Dilione (Tennessee commit)

I think it would be insane to redshirt him if he comes in within a few days.

This team has the parts to compete for a natty, just need a reliable scorer and that's Freddie. I understand he's not a true PG, but he can play the one. We need someone to take the scoring pressure off of Vescovi

Key isn't providing enough points for us

He’s a Springer clone with a better jump shot

It wouldn’t hurt to have another go to scorer

Depends on how desperate we are for scoring and whether the added points Dilione brings more than offsets the points he gives away if indeed his defense is lacking. Is he a net positive? If yes, play him. JMO

No. Barnes doesn’t play guys who aren’t good on defense.

The adjustment to college ball won‘t be easy. It’s a whole different ballgame.

Springer shot 43.5% from 3 in his only season. I'm not sure Dilione has a "better" jump shot, but I agree they are similar players. Dilione is a bit quicker, perhaps, and an equally creative ball-handler. His quickness is best seen in his decisiveness with the ball in his hands. Like Springer, a score-first combo guard who is plenty capable of playing some point guard.

Not sure I see that comp, Keon was an elite level athlete and better defender than scorer…Dilione‘s athleticism is more average and probably something that will limit his stock, and is a much better scorer than defender at this stage.
I was thinking the same thing. Strange comparison.

You think he will play this season? Or @bleedingTNorange do you think he will? Also does anyone have a time frame of when he will be on campus?
Should be here within a week, as for playing or not, I think they throw him into practice and see how he looks and go from there. I don’t think he envisions himself as a 4 year guy so getting him some run would make sense, but the staff also won’t throw him out there just because. Worst case is he gets a head start on acclimation, practicing and working out, it’s a win win.

Is Dilione coming in mid-season any indication that they know that JJJ is done and won’t be returning?

2 to 1, he plays

I think it has to play in some. They may not know for sure yet if JJJ is done, but it sure looks that way. If he does return, I don't think he's ever going to reach 100% this season, which makes it tough to justify risking further injury by playing him. He can probably go make some money over seas after this season if he can get healthy.

from this report, it sounds as if he may need some time to build up his defensive skills.

if it takes a month to adjust, will that be enough time for him to be a better fit than BJ could be within a month?

Not sure we need a sg as much as a pg.

Sounds great to me. Also I hate to even ask this, but this couldn’t turn into a Sharpe situation like Kentucky had last year right? I don’t even think it’s possible, but I’m just wondering if he is eligible for the 2023 draft

Looks like Davin Cosby is also enrolling early at Alabama this semester. But seems he is redshirting for next year

No, I don’t believe so.

With this team so challenged offensively and his potential to help our most glaring need, I would be shocked if he gave up his senior year just so he can practice for next fall. No-one knows if/when JJJ is coming back, so if he can score - play him. The defense is really good now, so if it takes a slight dip but our offensive flow looks better, I believe it would be a good trade-off. It might also take some pressure off JP to feel like he has to do so much.
JMO

Is there a roster spot open or does a move have to be made to add FD to the roster?

Go Vols!!

I think it's pretty simple. If he can take care of the ball and play good team defense like Barnes wants, then he will probably play.

If not, he'll be getting a major head start for next season.

I may be wrong but I’ve watched quite a few full games from OTE. Freddie has a lot of talent but I don’t know that he’s going to ready to play when he rolls in. Never know what will happen when a player gets into a new environment but these are things I see which will limit him from contributing this year.

Defense: he has the tools. He lacks concsistent effort and is caught flat footed/ball watching often when playing whatever “zone defense” they use in OTE. I know everyone is different but that generally doesn’t get fixed overnight. I would say from a defensive standpoint BJ is prob miles ahead due to having summer and fall camps.

Offense: he has a great handle, for his age. He dribbles pretty high and uses his off arm to protect the ball more than being low to the ground. I bet you ZZZ. Santi, and Jahmai rip him repeatedly in practice. Like many physically gifted young players, he was able to get the paint without a plan and still finish. That will be a problem at the next level. Right now it also feels like he’s pretty ball dominant as far his scoring and there’s alot of wasted dribbles in the backcourt before he gets going. He will need more urgency on that end.

Again, this is just what I see that I think will keep him off the floor right now. Nothing to do with talent or potential. Like many have mentioned before… we are in a completely different situation than when Santi or Jarnell came mid season. We don’t really need him to compete this year. Not trying to negative but I got really excited that he was coming early so started watching full games to see how he could help.
