One of the best defenders in college basketball. He might not be the fastest or quickest, but he uses instinct, positioning, anticipation, and effort. He’s gone from not-so-good to exceptional, and that’s a credit to his dedication and hard work. He’s a nightmare for the opposition.Vescovi is definitely not awful presently as a defender, not that he ever was. He is an outstanding defensive player and has been for a while now.
It is great that he is getting a head start. Really nothing negative about it as long as he is mentally though enough to handle the adversity and learning curve. But... there is some...I guess we can just say zealous optimism about the near term. He looks to be a very good player and we are excited he is coming to UT. All the "missing piece" and "hope he doesn't play this season and then leave early" talk is exaggerated. I am not sure he fits the 1-n-done profile. Not to say he doesn't eventually get good enough to leave early for the NBA. But he is not an elite athlete. Doesn't have elite measurables for his position at the next level. He is not a true PG. His defense is not elite. He is not an elite shooter. None of that is to put him down. In fact, I find it a positive that he very likely stays at UT for a couple years. He is a natural scorer who is savvy with the ball and has good instincts.
Trying to make sense of this move with Dilione. To make this move signals that he's going to be counted on next year so they want him acclimated and settled in as quickly as possible. One would love to see he and Phillips play together, but my BVS keeps whispering to me that they're doing this because Phillips is out of here no matter what or we've got concern about an academic casualty? I'm probably off in the weeds on this, but this move is strange...very strange. The Dillone early enrolee situation was discussed on Rocky Top Rewind podcast last night and AP said that Phillips may come back next season as well.

Poorly worded post on my part. Lose Key, Vesco and Phillips and we're gonna need someone to step in right away and be a solid contributor. The rush to get Dilione acclimated might be something of an insurance policy? Or maybe we're reaching a point where JJJ might shut it down and Dillione would be an emergency option should someone else go down with an injury?Phillips plays a different position so I don’t think these two things have anything to do with one another.
No, it’s a case where we have an open scholarship and there’s really no negative that could come from bringing him in now given the available spot and a redshirt. He gets a head start on adjusting to the game by practicing against these guys, gets acclimated to college life, head start on strength & conditioning etc etc…it doesn’t mean anything more than that, the scholarship was sitting there going to waste, literally no reason not to bring him in.Poorly worded post on my part. He wasn’t good. Assign whatever adjective to it you deem appropriate, I guess. Maybe “awful” is too harsh, but the point remains.
Yeah, the comment was really based on his lack of conditioning and athleticism that lead to him getting beat off the ball. His steals were a product of his high basketball IQ leading him to jumping passing lanes and his hustle. And his lack of experience playing defense at the level Barnes requires also played a role. As you said, it’s relative to how he played defensively throughout the rest of his career, too, as he has improved tremendously.I guess awful is subjective, it was his worst season defensively of the 4 he's been here. But he was 3rd on the team with 23 steals (although he only played in 19 games). He was 5th on the team in defensive win share and finished 2nd on the team with 1.2 steals per game (behind only Turner). His 2.7 defensive rebounds were 6th on the team. He was not in the best condition so he struggled on perimeter defense. But he was as good as any other guard we had playing at the time except maybe JJJ and Bowden.
Now where he was objectively awful was in the ball handling department, he was 2nd in total turnovers at 67 and JJJ who had 68 played in 8 more games.
Yeah like BTO said, I’m not sure why you’d assume there has to be something brewing for us to take him early. There’s no downside, why wouldn’t you take him even if you didn’t know anything about Josiah or Julian?Poorly worded post on my part.
