“Idiots in tennessee”

People defending him need to understand he started it because he has an on air forum and knows we can only respond on Twitter. If he doesn’t like what’s said on Twitter then he needs to get off of it. Also for some reason New Yorkers ( and many Yankees) take great pride in trashing southerners and the south because they want to appear superior. Then they all move here as soon as they can.
...and that's when we learn they are definitely not superior

It's all about optics for me. It's poor taste and makes the fan base look bad.

Yup, just bend over and accept comments like Fran's, Herbie, etc. They got the mic, and they are not afraid to use it against some (but not against Sabin's bama, those heels, or golden dome'rs).

The expression about not $hitting where you eat comes to mind here. Fran Frascella has handled this situation poorly. He would have been better off to not mention it at all. Calling the Tennessee fans idiots was the dumbest of all moves; and it doesn't matter if the comment was just targeted to the ones on Twitter.
But it does matter that it was targeted at the Twitter commenters. Because they were probably abusive while also being wrong.

Maybe Santi’s been pronouncing his own name wrong the whole time? 🤣

And what does that say about our university? We admit students who can't even pronounce their own names correctly! We deserve to be the laughingstock of college basketball 😢

Well, UT admits ~ 78% of applicants, so there may be a few in there who are majoring in beer with a minor in football

He started it after we went after him on Twitter? You have less of a sense of responsibility then my 10 year old. What he said was dumb. But he's right. We are idiots. Well at least those doing the Twitter thing and being wrong at the same time.

Best thing about all of this is imagining that SV has a great sense of humor and maybe purposefully told him how to pronounce it wrong. I have to say, as a college kid, I took every opportunity to mess with people.

The first comment about it on the board was time stamped 4:23, so that would be ~ 53 minutes into the broadcast. It was late first half. They came back from a commercial break and he said something like, for all the Tennessee idiots tweeting me that I’m pronouncing Vescovi’s name incorrectly, I’m saying it right.

And yes, I don’t care how many people were tweeting him, there’s no justification for referring to “Tennessee idiots” on air.

Nobody really "went after him" initially. They just asked him to say the name correctly. He then responded:

He was responding at the start of the game about conversations he had like this on the 20th. When he said that on-air, more people responded. Then he responded with "idiots in Tennessee". Thing is though, we aren't wrong...he is. In Spanish the stress is in the first syllable of his name. In Spanish the name appears as Véscovi, the accent is there to tell you where the stress is. It's an acute accent over the vowel that is stressed. VESS-co-vee, not Ves-ko-VEE.

People only "went after him" after he called people idiots on-air.

"We are idiots" Speak for yourself bud.

In the clip posted by Unconditional Surrender, I hear Santi himself say "ves-CO-vi." Am I hearing it wrong?

His name has been sort of mispronounced in his first two years here, with a stronger stress on CO. Even though it's written as Véscovi. His full name being Santiago Véscovi Vannet. I believe our brains usually break down words into syllables based on the loudness of vowels. It's a three syllable name with 3 vowels, E-O-I. So you're going to hear the vowels pretty prominently. If you get a chance to watch the commentators say it again, they place the stress at the end. Even sounded to me like they were saying ves-ska-VEE. Stress is not just about loudness, but also length.
