1/5 of Gen Z (1997-2004) identify as LGBT.

Did you ever do a survey when you were younger? I remember a drug one while in HS and I'm sure those results showed everyone was on every drug available
I thought they were offering all those drugs so I signed up for all of them!

Somebody pointed out that we started seeing a lot more left-handedness after people stopped thinking it was devilry. I think sexuality has always been a spectrum, but we just suppressed the "abnormal" and no matter where you were on the spectrum, you pretty much needed to decide if you were going to be a totally straight person or be a gay person (unhappily closeted or alienated but out of the closet).

I think the younger generation is far more comfortable accepting that sexuality is a spectrum. Kids will say they are Q probably because it gets them attention, but also because they really are open and it can simply be an admission that they don't know what they are yet.

couple thoughts on this

I do think the acceptance angle explains some of the generational differences

I do think the maturity angle explains some of the generational differences

the sexuality is a spectrum view point I agree with - what is much less clear is the notion that gender is a spectrum in the same sense yet the measure at question mixes the two notions.

the LGBTQ categorization has expanded in what situations/conditions/biology/feelings are included and perhaps the expanding definition explains quite a bit. older generations had a more binary definition (hetero or homo). IOW - the question (the measure) has differing definitions to each generation from narrow/strict to broad/ill defined. For example, an 80 year old who dressed as a girl one Halloween might say no to the question while a Gen Z who did the same may answer yes.

Sexuality is fluid, on a spectrum, myriad - however you want to phrase it. Has been since the dawn of man, and even before man, we see it in the greater animal kingdom as well.

Gender is not. Not for highly evolved mammals such as hominins. It’s biological, and it is binary, 99.99% of the time.

A portion of this (which I've witnessed first hand) is the dopamine hit. Social media (in part) has a whole generation craving that dopamine hit by getting validation online. Coming out, saying you're bi, pan enm etc. Gets a lot of attention for that person. They began to crave it. Look at all the wannabe models on Instagram. Very similar. Instant dopamine hit.

I'm not saying every person who comes out isn't truly gay, but the dopamine factor can't be ignored.

It would be a hard thing to equitably poll. Where were these polls conducted? San Francisco, LA, Chicago or .... Wartburg, Tennessee? That matters.
Bill Maher had a segment on it.

There are rural areas in Ohio that have seen almost no movement, with rates way below the national average. I agree with him - that probably points to suppression.

California is seeing skyrocketing rates, way above the national average.

His conclusion was that if Ohio is clearly suppressing them, than California is clearly “growing them”.

Jesus.

Social media is making the kids gay thru chemical reactions created by kids validating each other, next on Alex Jones.

"Western" culture was born from Greece. Thousands of years ago
They openly had orgies with the same sex, and opposite sex. Roman's too.

Christianity came along an curved that. It suppressed it, not by the bible itself but the institution of the church.

Christianity is on the decline. Not a surprise to see a rise in homosexuals and "other" designations.

Less God fearing men, means women taking on more masculine roles, and the smart ones are not getting pregnant by weak men. On the flip side dumb women are still getting pregnant by weak men, and creating perpetuating culture of boys raised by women that don't know how to be men.
So this leads to many biological males on the fringe (by birth) turning gay.
The toxicity of ego driven male machismo drives other less aggressive males to be confused about their sexual niche. So many of them can turn a-sexual. Or turn trans- because they look to strong women for inspiration.

Less God= equals weak stupid men that can't be the backbone of the nuclear family. So you get broken homes, and youth learning about humanity through watching porn...

I like boobies too LV! Thanks for the detailed analysis.

My personal experience is that most women have a more fluid sexuality than they were willing to admit. Now they are willing to admit falling somewhere on the spectrum.

Your screen name seems vary appropriate after reading this drivel.

OK, so why is the divorce rate so low among atheists and so high among Christians?

If it’s a matter of increased acceptance, why have suicide rates not budged?

You and I just agreed on some things

I agree that more and more women are now comfortable talking about those “college days”. And that doesn’t leave them when they graduate.

Most men are not at all down for that conversation. I guess that’s just societal?

I see more men claiming to be bisexual. It is something I have a difficult time comprehending. In women, I get but maybe that's just because I find it hot.

Me too.

But from a purely biological standpoint I’m not sure why one gender would be more predisposed to sexual fluidity than the other?

*reported

Male on female violence has much higher stakes, and so it's going to get reported less than female on female violence, which is considered a fair fight. It also seems like a certainty that women hitting men is getting reported the least. Interestingly, gay male couple violence supposedly goes underreported, too.
Source?

Im guessing you’ve never been to a church revival where one kid gets saved and the next night 5 of his/ her buddies miraculously catch the spirit after seeing all the attention and approval the first one got? Never underestimate the desire for people to feel like their peers. And it’s double for adolescents.
