'10 CA QB Chase Rettig

Volfan76..

If Newton decides to come to Tennessee.. 90% would gladly take him on the grounds that he does not screw up again... If he does.. theres the door
End of story..

Go Preach elsewhere..

I like Cam's skills as much as you and believe in giving people 2nd chances usually...but the QB position is one that you DO NOT want to have a perpetual question mark. You want someone who is not only extremely talented, but who is a high character guy...and without grade issues. If they aren't disciplined enough to keep up their grades, they are likely not going to be as dedicated to film and playbook study as you want either.

I just feel Newton is a very high risk to be another James Banks or Brent Schaffer. I think CLK will invest in a more solid prospect.

Kenny Stabler and Joe Namath, two AL legends, think you're misguided.

Good thing we don't recruit by your standards or it would be tough to field a team. Newton has only had the one incident and he's guilty of nothing. As long as he keeps his nose clean he will be playing QB for someone in 2010. If it aint us it will be someone else.

Nah... I'll stay on it..
I beleive in recruiting high character guys just like the next but he's not a Pac Man Jones or a Micheal Vick..

He is a kid who wanted a laptop and bought a hot one..

you get over it

The guy was just stating his opinion Sab, and i don't think he was totally off. Great quarterbacks tend to be high character guys, who work hard and don't get into trouble. But when recruiting high school kids, those type of QBs are few and far in between.

You know, I remember when Vick got caught at the airport with a fake water bottle with "pot residue" in it. Colin Cowherd went on a huge rant about bad decision making and how he would trade Vick in an instant.

That was 3 months before the raid on his house and the initial dog fighting accusations.

I'm assuredly not trying to compare Newton with Vick (Vick did have other past issues at the time like Ron Mexico, while Newton has a single mistake), but it's interesting how many of the guys that get in deep trouble show signs early on.

With the QB situation UT has, Newton is well worth what seems to be a fairly low risk.

Agreed...

Even bringing up someone life Brent Schaffer..

He had a hard time here but once he got to Ole Miss I don't beleive he was in trouble again.. I could be wrong but I dont remember hearing anything..

I think we get scroggins, then we wait til september or later when he starts getting attention by blowing up at a better school. I think we offer and get him and he is a project player that Kiff and reaves work on and maybe make him into a great QB and then be able to show off that they do know how to coach a kid. If not then we would of picked up a great '11 or '12 QB so then there would be no worries.

Rettig is going to end up being our guy for 2010.

I belive you are right on. I think he is a very good Qb, people talk about how he's not built up but i think of Montana Stabler Namath. you just need to be able to run the plays and have that arm like he has. i say at the end of this year he is the talk of the town.

sure hope we aren't the only school to offer him. Sure would not give me a lot of confidence in him to help much.

something is wrong with the picture on this kid...

I feel the same way too, but things could change quickly this fall if he has a breakout year. I can live with the lack of stars but the lack of offers is definitely a concern.

Lamaison is 2009 and I think he is pretty much a lock no matter what we do.

true, we have to have more than Stephens and Rozier for spring practice to get anything accomplished. Assuming Rozier hangs in that long.

I lived in Dana Point right above San Clemente. I can say it is a place kids get bored and get in a lot of trouble or become super religious. Difference in that place and anywhere else is the money those kids have make it so they can get in a whole lot of trouble. Other than that IDK just brainstorming. Everyone seems to like him at the Camps he is Mr. #2 to Scroggins wherever he goes right now.

I've heard that about Rozier before. What indications do we have that he won't stick around? I thought he was pretty much a given.

My guess is Rozier is going to be in for a surprise and will probably end up a UT student only.

he ain't very good and it doesn't appear he can get very good.. jsut wonder what his incentive will be to continue with the routine... pretty hard work for no reward
