'10 CA QB Chase Rettig

JS is still a big target, and until his status is confirmed, will continue to be #1. even after, this staff wont stop.

as for Rettig attracting players, he will not get the immediate magnatism that will follow JS. hes just not on the same level yet, and the media has been hyping up JS and his decision making. i would rather have JS from a recruiting leverage standpoint. however, Rettig will get us some recruits, maybe a big name here or there, but right now, dont expect to see a long list of recruits waiting to sign aboard the rettig train...

rettig is a project IMO. it will take a redshirt year to get him ready for SEC play. he definatley has upside, and i think with proper coaching will become a good QB. we need 2 QBs this class.

Dude. It's laughable that you think Rettig would be able to contribute in any positive way as a true freshman. Watch his film for Monte Kiffin's sake. He's a project guy.

Most everything he types, is laughable. The truly sad thing is, he thinks he is "in the know".

You can't tell one lick from his footage, nor can you tell about Jesse from his footage. Even coaches don't know how quickly they'll develop and absorb the playbook/system.

That's what's laughable...hearing guys like yourself sound like a parrot...repeating exactly what some yahoo from rivals said about him. They know little more than we do...it's all speculation at this point, and you know it

You may not be able to tell anything from his film, but don't assume that everyone else is equally inept. You can tell a whole helluva lot from his film and it's readily apparent that he needs a lot of work before he sees any live action.

I couldn't even tell you what Rivals or anyone else thinks about Rettig. I am going off of my own evaluation. Ask anyone around here how much I think about the "recruiting experts" evaluations. I think it is much more telling that Rettig had no offers at all whatsoever from anyone until most every other QB was off the board.

kinda good to be back on the same page here, but i dont know how much of a project id call him though, in the sense that everyone is, even JS would not be ready his freshman year. i dont know if any freshaman could be ready mentaly for the SEC that is the biggest part of it for some of them. and i really belive that is what got the best of our faveroit subject of conversation.

although i disagree on that (that may not mean anything in the long run), your otherwise right. Rettig has POTENTIAL. he is a work in progress. he has some skills, but they are not ready for SEC play. he will be redshirted IMO unless he has a turn-around senior campaign or is our only QB recruit (doubt it).

and yes, the fact that he hasnt garnered too much national attention does say something, even though we shouldnt buy too much into that...

Rettig did not have offers because of his performance in his Junior season. Most coaching staff basically use Rivals to evaluate players (Fulmer for example). I mean Rettig just beat Bell in a competition. Trust me the other players know this now or will soon. There were no standout QBs in this class. I agree with you the Rettig should not start in the SEC as a freshmen and anyone who thinks that is very wrong but none and none of these QBs should start in the SEC as freshmen. That type of QB recruit is rare.

Based on what exactly? I keep hearing how he's a project...says who? Just because a Rivals analyst said so, everyone takes it for gospel and keeps repeating it like a parrot...yaaa'aaach, He's a project. He's a project (whistle)!

oh so true. all QBs will be a work in progress, only one will be ahead of the other. thats why i hope stephens matures by his senior year. worse enough (besides playing in the SEC as a freshman), we (coaches? and the fanbase) for whoever we recruit to come in to LEAD the program in the right direction. thats HUGE to an 18 year olds mentality.

all QBs are a project, especially incoming freshmen into the toughest conference no matter what you make of his film! he is good, but neither he, nor scroggins, will walk in and deliver us victory. its not happening. both will take time to mold into a solid SEC QB. Rettig will take longer i think. doesnt mean it will happen, but theres nothing hes done just yet to prove otherwise.

If they can get here for Spring practice, that puts them ahead of the curve...as opposed to one who get's here in the fall. Just not enough time to absorb the playbook and get the snaps they'd need.

Well it is not just the playbook it is a physical thing too. Thus a Scroggins for example never had a shot of starting and being effective as a freshmen much like Jimmy at ND. They needed a year or two to develop physically as well as learn system.

It helps if he is here in Spring. If he is a student of the game and very dedicated maybe he can come in and be serviceable in a close game. Asking an 18 year old kid to step on the field in front of 100 thousand and then throw the ball at least half the time to beat a UF for example is doomed for failure.

Well, nobody was calling Scroggins a project. I'm saying WE DON'T YET KNOW...coaches don't know, and they'd admit that readily.
It's usually a matter of what's upstairs....and the kid has high GPA (3.6), so that tells me that he has a good head on his shoulders and studies hard

all im saying, and what i think most are, is that from what weve heard and what weve watched of the two, JS has the upside. both will take tremendous work to get into SEC-mode quick.

I think even if Rettig were to commit we are going to have to take a Juco kid like Newton or Sims. Then next year sign two more HS kids. We have scary #'s right now at QB. We have to get some bodies here.

After Crompton is gone. We will be left with Stephens plus Rozier (walk on). Lamaison is rumored to be a silent but that is not confirmed and the kid had no meaningful offers at all. Something has to give.

You make it sound like a bad thing. Im all for Newton.

Newton is starting to look like the best option. I think losing Marve was the biggest loss of this class. Shannon screwed us in that deal.

Wrong. They absolutely do not. Not if they want to be competitive they don't. They go off the film and their own personal evaluations.
