yeah Palardy's leg is one of the better ones in the nation

Acosta would probably be a walkon scenario

Palardy is the superior kicker. Acosta doesn't even hold an offer.

Thanks, Sab. All this talk about Palardy in the middle of Zach's committment made me think there was no better kicker available.

I know we need a kicker, but still... we've been salivating for Olinemen for quite a while. Glad we landed a beast!

IF we take both..Palardy handles kickoffs
Acosta handles FG's (he has crazy accuracy)

Toss up to see who punts

If we get Palardy, IDK if we will even bother with Acosta, since I think we are recruiting Palardy for all aspects of the kicking game (kickoffs, placekicking, and punting).

Taking Acosta over Palardy would be like ordering a ribeye over a prime rib. The ribeye is a good choice, but a prime rib is a FINE choice.

He needs somebody to practice with when the kickers go off to do their thing.

True, but I think Sab is correct in saying that Acosta would likely have to walk on. I just don't see us offering scholarships to two kickers when one of them is already expected to handle all kicking duties.

I doubt we can get him to walk on, but I would love it if he did. He would not be a good backup should a Palardy be hurt or even go through a phase like Leaverton did at one time. I remember another Memphis kid, Chris Hogue, filling in quite nicely. Especially when you are looking at one person handling kickoffs, field goals, and punts.

FWIW, I have heard around Memphis that Acosta does have a strong relationship with Grand and should we have to offer if because we do not get a Palardy, then he would probably commit quickly.

After watching those youtube vids, I don't see how you could NOT let Palardy do both.

Only ? is Palardy's accuracy on fg's from distance, because he never really had to kick any on that powerhouse team. Still, worst case scenario he could be like a more versatile Janikowski without the attitude.

Does this mean Kiffin will let him try the 70 yarder? :)

Palardy is accurrate. look on his kickoffs, each of them were set on the hash mark. When they went into the endzone, they landed in a direct like with the hashmarks. it was unbelieveable.

You really don't want your placekicker to handle punts as well as kickoffs. Ideally, you want two guys to share the duties.

Also FYP.

Actually what makes both these schools so attractive to Mike is the fact that the staffs at both have assured him that he can do all three if he wins the jobs - they are not looking to divy up the jobs, if Mike is the best man. He has worked hard at the three disciplines and he is ready to fight for the jobs at all three positions. Mike dropped some schools because they told him they wanted two separate guys - regardless of whether or not he was the best man for the job.

And when you take a look at the guys who were drafted this past season in the NFL - 3 of the 5 drafted guys went two ways in college - Ryan Succop at South Carolina, Pat McAfee at W. Virginia, and Thomas Morstead at SMU. Two of the three Groza Award finalists this season were dual guys, in Sakoda (mentioned by bburger) and the winner, Graham Gano from FSU.

Last year, roughly 10-11 guys in D-I college football did both. Not a huge percentage but it is done - and, with the guys drafted in the NFL and up for the Groza, with some success.

Good points! The one great thing about our staff is that they'll tell him the truth.

They've turned away enough good athletes to have earned that trust. If they tell him he'll kick three ways, that's how they intend to use him.

It would be awesome to have a Groza award winner.

P.S. Les Miles won't even be at LSU when Mike is being considered for the award. So, whatever he tells him is worth about one season. Even the LSU fans will figure out that they have Larry Coker 2.0 within the next season or two. They're slow, but not that slow.

Bump for new story up. Anyone care to tell?

Seems like a really great kid. Talks about Coach Gran being a real Christian man and that he knows if he needs anything that he'll take care of him. His family has a big influence over his decision and they know what Coach Gran, Coach Kiffin, and Tennessee are capable of. I think he sounds like a Vol, but only time will tell. Very good things said in the article.
