'10 OK ATH Demarco Cobbs

I am getting sick and tired of people basically assuming he will end up on defense and barring something unfornseen it will not happen.

He wants to play WR, and the staff recruited him to play WR.

Feel free to merge, this is just something that is really frustarating when so many people assume that Cobbs will be a DB or LB, which at this point is just flat out wrong.

Good luck getting that fact to stick. I argued with LV til I was blue in the face about it...even linked the article where he flat out said he was going to play offense here.

I don't get it either. There has never been anything to suggest that the kid is going to be on defense.

LV has just pulled it out of his arse basically.

:lolabove: did I? I've seen a few people say it including some of the Rivals guys. We will see when he gets here. Somebody needs to tell Brent Vinson he was recruited as a WR because he still thinks he's on defense...

Welp, there it is folks. Some cat on rivals said it so Demarco is a safety.

Just because someone has previously been recruited to play one position but switched to another doesn't mean everyone is going to. Kiffin told him he'd be a WR, so he will be a WR. Same situation as Teague's.

Yeah.. James Banks was the best QB UT ever had..

The only guys that are 100% sure of being WRs are Ambles and Milton.

I'm not disputing that. Cobbs could play either side at a high level. I'm just trying to figure out the sudden "Cobbs is a Safety" crap.

I think we have solid depth at Safety and less than solid depth at WR...so why not let him play receiver?

We basically have Jackson, Waggner, and Myles at safety next year. The fact that we have no DB prospects committed right now as a lot to do with it too.

Cobbs isn't a natural wide receiver, the position he played in the tournament, but he is effective and a very good athlete.

Cobbs might not be a receiver at the next level as the jury is still out on his ability to run routes and be consistent with his hands

From Rivals...

I read back through all of his camp reviews and there are a TON of good things to say about him as a WR. But there are also knocks on him and people who say he will play safety...

The way I'm looking at it is, he is going to be doing the exact same thing as Ambles, a bigger possession type WR. He is not close to Ambles in terms of running routes, quickness, WR smarts, and hands. The only thing he really has on Ambles is strength...

We are bringing in 4 WR type recruits right now and will probably be getting 1 more. Somebody's going to defense. I think Cobbs would be the most valuable on that side of the ball...

I just think he will be a safety for the Vols when he gets on campus. He may not be, it's jmo. Either way, he is going to be a big time player. This is nothing to get in a heated argument about...

Depth at WR: Jones, Moore, Teague, Nuke, Rogers, Ambles, Milton, Meline

Depth at S: Jackson, Myles, Waggner

There is going to be a spot open at SS and it's not going to be Waggner who gets it. Myles will be battling some incoming freshmen for it...

Except that's not what Kiffin told him. Teague either. Teague was never guaranteed which side of the ball he'd start on and like Cobbs, it didn't matter to him.

Cobbs knows he is likely to end up on defense.

He isn't a natural WR because he's never played it before. A lot of WRs in college didn't play the position in High School. Cobbs is a good enough athlete to learn the position rather easily imo. I think he could be a Dez Bryant type guy. Big, strong, and very hard to defend.

We are actively recruiting safeties...I can't see why we need 2 in this class when Myles and Janzen both are already on board and have bright futures. I guess if we don't land one then Cobbs would be easier to switch.
