'10 VA DT Evan Hailes

Hailes said he'd need to go to Bama's camp to secure an offer, but has no plans of doing so at this time.

How does that not end this whole discussion?

This is the top 5 he gives to Bama writers

It doesn't end the discussion because this is CFB recruiting. Crazy stuff happens. Who knows - he may not need to go to a Bama camp to get an offer now. What if Bama were to offer him? What do you think it does to his top 5?

Just my opinion that it's just odd. I probably wouldn't think much over it if Sims wasn't his teammate.

The kid has been a major UT lean since we started recruiting him and Jerod Askew. The guy has named us his leader since last year, will be at camp next month, and we have his defensive teammate on the team.

I just really don't see the need for people with no real insight in the situation to stroll over to the recruiting board and start questioning the kid because of a stupid Bama article with the title "Is UA still pursuing" Hailes.

What insight do you have that I don't? I'm 90% confident he'll be a Vol - but I also believe Bama could make it interesting if they really wanted to.

Kind of related to the whole begging for an offer deal, Oku did the same exact thing.

He begged and begged and begged for OU to offer him. When they finally did, he basically laughed at them and said he would never go there according to some OU fans I know.

Some kids just have a complex like that. I don't know if Hailes does or anything, but its a possibility.

I come to the exact same conclusion Bass. Also.....Slick Nick may have something special lined up for when he gets his offer, I don't know what, those recruiting geniouses are innovative as hell. Why do the do it this way? Because the kid has said publicly that he wants a Bama offer. Might be enough to pull him to Bama.

Just a thought.

for many of these kids its all about status. an offer from bama just means that he can pick and choose to go anywhere he wants, obviously he and askew are very tight. that's the deciding factor along with coach O

article from the local paper

Oscar Smith's Hailes is looking for a safe college -- dailypress.com

Hailes, a 6-foot-1, 315-pound defensive tackle from Oscar Smith High in Chesapeake, is looking for a program that runs a 4-3 defensive alignment. He's looking for a coaching staff that's going to stay in place for a while. Most importantly, he said, he's seeking a safe haven, a place where he doesn't have to worry about ending up like his late friend Lonnie Andrews.

On July 1, 2008, Andrews was shot and killed in South Norfolk. He had just graduated from Oscar Smith, where he played running back. He was about to head to Virginia State University on a football scholarship. He was one of eight young athletes shot in the Hampton Roads area in a 10-month span.

He said 4-3 defense. Doesn't bama run a 3-4. If so that would put bama out. So the offer thing would just be for status

Mike Farrell...

• Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith defensive tackle Evan Hailes could make his college decision by the end of June. Right now, the teams in the hunt are Tennessee, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State and LSU. Hailes will visit Virginia Tech in early June, then head to Tennessee in the middle of June. If he feels comfortable enough at one of those two schools following the visits, a commitment could follow. If not, further visits are in store. Tennessee still sounds like the ultimate destination if all goes well on his visit, but the Hokies have made a nice push.

Hopefully, he doesn't pull the trigger after the Va Tech visit, but I don't think he will.

After hearing his interview on sports animal last week i'm not worried about him. He's coach o's to lose and that is not going to happen.

Damn fine job, James. Please keep contributing over here. We think a lot of you and are appreciative of what you are doing.

Tennessee could also be getting some help here from 2009 Oscar Smith signee LB Jerod Askew.

“He talks to me about Tennessee a lot. He talks to me about them every day."

Any joe shmo High School kid can bench 300+ and squat 400+ with a little hard work, but this kid's numbers are on a differet level and indicate that he works hard.
