'10 VA DT Evan Hailes

I think we will sign one of the top (if not the top) dline classes in the country. I could conceivable getting all the commits we currently have (Smith, Copeland, Broussard) and get Hailes, Quarles, one of the Brynes kids (probably Miller), and Lemonier/Gholston.

haha maybe you are right. I can't see us signing more than 3 DTs. Harris and Brown will be Vols, and I think Orgeron and Monte will stay on Quarles and his dad HARD and we will get him. With those 3 coming in this year, Hughes and Walls being sophmores next year, and a possible 5 star in Anthony Johnson coming in this year, Hailes will be hard pressed to see a whole lot of playing time any time soon. It sounds like he's getting a little scared of that happening...

Just my opinion. I prolly have no clue what's really going on...

We won't get him. Quarles's dad wont let this happen. Don't care who stays on him.

I hope we sign 4 or 5 top DTs although that may be a little optimistic at this point. If we would have won 9 games last year I would be less concerned. Even though we have the coaching it will be awhile before top recruits come to UT to potentially have to sit for awhile like at USC.

I'm pretty sure we will end up with 4 or 5 DTs. The need is there and there are plenty of prospects with us near or at the top of their list. I like our chances with Hailes and Brown for sure, Garrison Smith or Richard Ash are real possibilities and we could always get a guy that's under the radar that impresses in camp or his senior year. One thing we all know that Orgeron is great at doing is discovering those 3* that play like 5*. Kilgo is a name that springs to mind.

When a kid wants to go to one school and a parent wants them to go to one school, sometimes the parents break. Especially as it gets closer to signing day and the parent starts to realize the depth of the decision. They start to see how it wears on their kid and realize once they sign on the dotted line its a done deal. Sometimes a loving parent will give into the will of their child. Not saying it will happen in this case. But that dynamic is possible.

These kids that are strong on UT should commit sooner rather than later. The line is filling up and there are only going to be so many seats on the bus before they run out

From what I've been told they feel very good about their chances with Hailes and Quarles. I think they are confident about getting Quarles when all is said and done.

Evan Hailes was going to commit to UT when he visits on the 20th (I think thats the camp date) but may now not go due to the Brown commitment. Seems he really likes PSU and loves coach Johnson.......they are your main threat for him.

I hate to hear that but like the old saying goes...a bird in the hand beats 2 in the bush!

Why in the world would a freshman be affected by a Junior College player? That is just plain odd. Eligibility-wise they are 2 classes apart and he'll likely have a lot more competition at Penn State among freshman and sophomore DT's than he ever would at Tennessee.

Hailes will be attending camps in June but won’t be working out at any of them. Says Hailes, “Schools that are recruiting me know what I have to offer. I am going to be visiting just to get to talk to the coaching staffs and make sure that I can see myself going to school there for the next couple of years.”

This came from today's Scout article called "Hailes Getting Close." It seems his decision is between Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Penn State. Here is a video of an interview with him from the same story. Somebody let me know what he says. I'm at work at the moment and can't listen:

I disagree. At Tennessee, Harris and Brown are 2 classes above him- Hughes, Walls, and Jeffrey are a class above him- Copeland (who is rumored to be moved to a DT), Broussard and another big time DT (Quarles, Smith, Uko, Ego, etc) will be in the same class as him in 2010- and probable 5star Anthony Johnson is a class below. UT will not be the place for him if he doesn't want competition...

There will definitely be competition from other players, but to let a JC commit affect his decision is strange. More likely than not he wouldn't play a huge amount his freshman year, anyways, so Brown would only possibly affect one season's worth of playing time.

My point was a JUCO affecting a high schoolers decision is just plain stupid.

Walls is still a question mark academically, Broussard is a huge question mark academically. Jeffrey is coming of a major injury. Copeland may at some point end up at DT but he certainly didn't look like he had the frame to me at Camp to become a future DT.

Exactly. That is why the John Brown commitment affecting him makes almost no sense at all.

I agree with you guys. I think there is room for another DT in this class and he would be a great fit. I think he would get an incredibly good shot to prove himself and play regularly in a rotation his sophomore season and beyond.

Evan is just a mammoth and if he likes UT then we will be okay. Surely a former 4 star recruit will not impact the decision of one of the best DT prospects in the nation.
