'10 WA QB Jake Heaps

suprising with all the hype over him. Sarkisian and Kiffin are all about him which should speak volumes to what we are looking for in a QB. The same system and both want him a lot. If just one liked him and the other didnt i would be more worried.

He has some work to do but he has lots of potential. You can't teach work ethic, heart, and that arm.

I know that Brunetti was not to happy with TN after JR day because they came at him with the approach of as an "athlete" rather than a QB

That's because if he doesn't play in more of a spread/speed offense, he will be a WR in college.

His current HS offense gets labeled as a spread, but according to a coach at the school that I talked to, their offense has pro style looks and spread looks. He (and this guy has college coaching experience so he has some cred) seemed to think that Brunetti could flourish in either. He certainly has the major league arm.

That said, I agree that the UT staff would know whether or not he would fit as a QB or not in their system. I think that he will go to a spread type offense.

From somethings I have heard, Ohio St may be a big contender for this kid if they continue their interest.

Would be a good fit.

Agreed. He is a kid that is busting at the seems in terms of talent, but he will definitely need some polishing. A RS year would put him as the 4yr air apparent to Pryor if he went there.

wow, this thread started out with a common consensus that he would be a great fit for UT.

I don't understand why a kid would go to OSU this year. Braxton Miller is coming in 2011, and a lot of people are already tabbing him as the #1 player and QB in the country.

From another board, a little insight on the Rivals ranking:

This is a behind the scenes view into what happened with the rivals ranking. Yes I know the family...

The two main guys from Rivals that rank the kids are based on the east coast. They saw Jake one time at the Army All American combine in San Antonio where Jake got off to a slow start having not picked up a ball since his state championship a about month previous. That performance and his size are the contributing factors for thier ranking strangely NOT his body of work. (Jake's is in the mold of a Drew Bree's Mark Bulger Steve Young as far as size goes so he is not going to blow you away with his stature when you meet him) But on the field he plays as big as any other guy you'll meet. Rivals own west coast affiliates are crying foul on the ranking with their east coast partners...

Matt Barkley last years #1 QB did not throw at that the Army All American combine for concern that the same thing could happen to him... a lowering of his rating based on one performance in an uncontrolled setting... in the end Barkley switched to the Under Armour Game... Combines like the Army All American are a free for all... it is not filled with all d-1 talent like you might imagine... Jake was not suppose to throw at the event and was at the last minute persuaded to do so. In retrospect he should have stood his ground. The family is taking a live and learn attitude on this one...

The West Coast Rivals guys have contacted the Heaps apologizing for their companies unfair rating and have emailed their disgust and frustration to their home office. But in their own words they have very little pull as Rivals is a east coast based company.

Jake is not expected to be on ESPN's top 150 list either as that has become a showcase for the kids that are attending their Under Armour game in Florida. ESPN/Under Armour was unsuccessful in getting the Heaps to date to switch to their game as he had already committed to the Army All American Game back in September of last year. Through channels ESPN let the Heaps know that they could expect Jake not to be in their top 50 due to his refusal to switch games. The Heaps are standing their ground refusing to be bullied...

The family is taking all of this in stride... from what I understand Jake spoke to several big time coaches yesterday that contacted him to make sure that he knew that they thought the Rivals thing proved how little the Rivals guys know about football. Heck Nick Saban personally offered Jake a Scholarship last night and laughed off the ranking slight.

As far as how did Jake do this weekend at the Vegas 7 on 7 all you have to do is read the articles from the SCOUT writers who were actually at the event. Jake unequivocally had a great weekend...

From Scout, the 7 on 7 tournament last weekend

Quarterback
Jake Heaps was hyped heading into this tournament and did not disappoint. He was easily the best quarterback in Vegas. Heaps has the arm to make every throw on the field, but what separated him from the competition was his ability to put touch on his throws. Many of the quarterbacks threw their passes way too hard, making it difficult for them to be accurate and for receivers to hold onto their passes. Heaps also clearly knew how to work his way through a progression. It was easy to notice many of the other quarterbacks looking directly at one receiver the entire play.

i noticed this yr while looking at rankings that both Rivals and ESPN gave players playing in their respective games better rankings than those playing in the other or if their was similar ability the guy in their game got the nod to amp up their all american tv ratings. Heaps wont be this low for long. Lots of politics these days.
