'11 SC S Pat Martin - UT Signee

Because some kids after they commit stop taking visits to other schools altogether.

If a kid wants to commit and Dooley tells him to hold off because he has to take another visit first, he very well could visit other schools during that time frame and find a better place, fit or whatever.

At the end of the day do you really think Dooley is telling top recruits no? I don't. It can be fun to speculate and argue about but come on, Dooley's not telling elite talent "Naw, not right now, sit on it for awhile and get back to me in a couple months." It's pretty obvious that Martin is already committed. It's just not public yet.

I dont know what he's telling them. Some people on here obviously think he's telling them they have to take 2 visits before they can commit.

Those are the same people who think we are getting more USC players to. No way Dooley is telling top recruits to take a couple more visits then committ. If anything they are silents.

This kind of feels like when a couple decides that they should hold off on getting married and date around a bit to see if they truly are right for each other. If you see it all, and you still want the one you fell in love with, then you are going to be that much more committed.

However, if you get married to the original one, and some super sexy offer comes right by, then you're going to leave in a heartbeat.

I think Dooley is doing the right thing. We don't need to turn talent away, but we also definitely don't need players who are only 90% committed, or whose heart isn't in it, or who are playing for UT with regrets. He is giving them the chance to see everything, and then still showing them that UT is better. It's a confident approach that also is sensitive to making the best decisions for the kids. Trust me, he will come out a lot better in the end for doing this, I promise.

A lot better in terms of what exactly?

Yeah I hope he's not telling them that. That is not a smart recruiting tactic whatsoever. Like I said once a lot of guys commit they are done visiting other schools. I know that isn't the case with all guys, but the majority it is.

If you hold off on a kid wanting to commit until he takes another visit, it keeps the door wide open for these kids to take other visits to other schools in the meantime. And in turn could very well lose you some big-time prospects. Just a very strange philosophy if it's really true.

Having players who are truly committed and want to give their all for Tennessee. And will a lot of them be extremely talented? Yes.

I think someone earlier said it best. Will it lose some recruits? Yes. Will it gain some? Yes. I definitely think this route works better with parents. Parents like coaches making it seem like they want their kid to make the best decision, and that their school might not be it, and not pressuring them to commit their life away right away. I just see this working out well. Dooley is honest, yet confident.

Well didn't CDD have the number 1 class at LSU when he was the recruiting cord.? If so then I would think whatever his tactics are they must work pretty well.

Yes he did have the #1 class. He had a few top 5 classes, and recruited the talent they used to win a national championship.

Terrible comparison.
You guys cannot be serious if you dont see the difference in being a recruiting coordinator and recruiting guys to play for an established brand name coach in Nick Saban, compared to recruiting guys to play for you, the former rec coordinator as the head coach.

Before the Fulmer-Kiffin ordeal... it was true.

We dont know that and will never know that. Bottom line is we all see how he turned out and people said what a great high character kid he was out of high school, same with Colquitt. You never know how these kids will turn out no matter how hard you try to play up the character angle. It's a weak excuse EVERYONE uses for poor recruiting.

I don't think we are currently recruiting poorly either. However (off topic and I'm sorry) I am so sick and tired of seeing people say "I want people who want to give their all for Tennessee, and have great character. Not me, give me 25 kids that have great talent and don't even know TN's history or care about it for all I care, and lets start winning 10+ games a year.

I wouldn't say they are recruiting "poorly" either. But they certainly aren't recruiting great by any means. I think they are doing about average at this point in time. Unless they make a major move with guys they are sitting 4th and 5th with right now (ie guys like Debell) then they are going to have a similar class to the one's in 08 and 06 in my opinion.

And yes the character comments are retarded. It's just a convenient excuse for landing guys who aren't highly recruited. Tennessee wouldn't have won **** in the 90's if they had ignored kids who didn't necessarily fit into some of the fans definition of "high character" kids.

When we start showing improvement on the field is when more blue chips will notice.

You guys keep bringing up comments about those who say TN should be recruiting good "character" players. I don't recall anyone saying we should recruit good character players to the exclusion of 5* studs. It's not an either/or proposition. You need both. Realistically, we aren't going to pull a large number of the perceived 5* so good character 3* are preferable to bad character 3*.

Sorry but no. Any kid can go bad but you don't want to increase the risks by taking alot of kids that you know come with baggage.

No, you don't want guys with subpar talent. You end up being Vandy. You also don't want kids with so many character issues that you can't keep them on the field... or else, well, you become what UT was when Fulmer was fired. UT is in the situation it is right now in great measure because CPF signed talented guys that couldn't get/stay on the field for various reasons.

This isn't the past. Things used to be overlooked and covered up. Now they're posted on a blog somewhere before the coach even knows about it. Boys can't just be boys anymore.

You're saying that Saban was "an established brand name coach" before he won the national championship at LSU?
